Jamal Shah’s painting exhibition unveiled at PNCA

0
ISLAMABAD, Feb 18 (APP):Acclaimed Miniature Painting Ustad Bashir Ahmed on Sunday inaugurated Jamal Shah’s painting exhibition titled “Celebration of a Dehumanized Existence” at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts.
The collection, which bears a universal interpretation transcending peace, positivity, and harmony, was praised for its profound symbolism and message.
Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Jamal Shah is a renowned visual artist. He has used the Murgha symbolically in most paintings to create an ambiance of lampooning, remorse, and mounting struggle. The Minister believed that humanity’s salvation lies in making a positive contribution towards the well-being of the less fortunate, who are devoid of daily bread and healthcare.
Jamal Shah's painting exhibition unveiled at PNCA
Jamal Shah’s paintings and sculptures are about themes so inquisitorial, soul-searching, and heartbreaking that it seems almost trite to describe his subject matter. His work inserted itself into the viewer’s consciousness through the way he seemed to fumble toward an understanding of how he should respond to the world he lives in. The return to painting reaffirmed Shah’s belief in the permanence and intellectual nature of the medium, the sense that the painted image necessitates a singular, uncompromising confrontation between the viewer and the object.
He has been almost unique in reinventing the paradigm of socialist painting. Consequently, his account of the imagery focuses attention on the notion that the combined images present a history of the working class – the dispossessed and the disenfranchised. Hence, the new body of paintings offers a memoir of the victory of British colonialism and reflects on the decline of working-class identity in confrontation with the right-wing programs.
It is clear that these paintings, titled “Celebration of a Dehumanized Existence,” on show at PNCA National Art Gallery, Islamabad, are a response to a particular set of historical circumstances. This helps explain both the polemics and the urgency of the imagery.
In the first instance, Shah has saturated the pictures with symbols, allusions, and questions. There are the recurring emblems of working-class struggle: the spade and the axe, the monkeys, and labor cast as a murgha – a stress position used as corporal punishment.
The figures take their cue from an earlier installation titled Situations 101, created for the Karachi Biennale 2017, and later re-installed at the PNCA, Islamabad, that conflated the human figure with social realism as public art. The language of culture and art, he reckoned, is an effective and equitable platform that gives voice and intellectual emancipation to the people.
In his welcome remarks, M. Ayoub Jamali, Director General PNCA, expressed his deep honor in hosting the first solo exhibition of Jamal Shah at the National Art Gallery.
He described the show as amazing and emphasized the importance of showcasing Shah’s work in a national space.
In his speech Jamal Shah, said “As an artist, my work is a reflection of the society I live in. It is an attempt to engage in a dialogue with my fellow human beings, to explore and confront the contradictions and struggles that exist within our society.
He said, that through my paintings, sculptures, and ceramic pieces, I hope to initiate a dialogue that can engage people toward the best possible path for our society. I believe that art has a responsibility to serve humanity, to contribute to the betterment of society.
Ultimately, the goal of any creative individual is to achieve a level of existence that can be called aesthetic, where truth prevails over deception, and where there is total transparency. My work is a reflection of this struggle, and I hope that it can serve as a catalyst for positive change in our world.
Ustad Bashir Ahmed, a renowned miniature artist of Pakistan and also the teacher of Jamal Shah was the Chief Guest while speaking at the occasion said that Jamal Shah’s expression harbors neither riddles nor mystery and is spiritedly decipherable by almost any segment of society. The works portray the inherent urge of human beings to interact, notwithstanding differences and misgivings, creating crossroads between cultures, he added.
With an inborn feeling of patriotism, he has always endeavored to inculcate a sense of civic and moral responsibility amongst the masses through his work. His profoundly insightful paintings promote pragmatic development through unification and sharing.
The exhibition will continue till 3rd March 2024, daily timings are 10 am to 4 pm. The gallery will be closed on Saturday.

Friends of Margalla Hills, civil society protests; demand CDA to de-seal visitors’ info centers

ISLAMABAD, Feb 18 (APP): The Friends of Margalla Hills National Park and members of the civil society on Sunday staged a peaceful protest outside the CDA-sealed visitors’ information center at Trail-5 to condemn the civic agency’s move that deprived many national and international tourists of credible knowledge on the wildlife and nature of the national park.

The protestors held placards with slogans written on it particularly “Save Margalla Hills”, “CDA Leave Margalla Hills”, “STOP Destroying Margalla Hills” and chanted slogans “We will have to protect Margalla Hills”.

A protestor requesting anonymity told APP that the demonstration and rally of Islamabad’s civil society and friends of Margalla Hills at Trail-5 was against the sealing of visitor information centers by the Capital Development Authority (CDA).

He said the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) staff was holding special awareness sessions for the masses visiting the national park. “After myriad of efforts, all the trails of the Margalla Hills were made plastic and littering free which was mainly due to the dedicated efforts of the Board staff and the members of the civil society supporting its nature preservation efforts,” he added.

He added that the protestors only demanded the federal capital’s civic agency de-sealing of the Visitor Information Centres at Trail-5 & 6.”The CDA illegally sealed the visitor information centers on Trail-5 & 6, where many domestic and foreign tourists were educated on the national park’s biodiversity and its protection. The CDA’s move has posed a threat to the Margalla Hills National Park and its wild animals, he alleged.

It may be mentioned here that the CDA through its Board’s decision has moved a summary to reclaim the old Islamabad Zoo from the IWMB and establish a modern Zoo for the federal capital residents. However, the Board in response had moved to the Supreme Court of Pakistan to seek its help for implementation of the Islamabad High Court’s decision that mandated the Board to officially manage the Zoo as the civic agency’s maltreatment of wild animals particularly the Asian Elephant, Kavaan and the pair of Brown Bears brought a bad name to the country.

The CDA in strange effort sealed the visitors information centres at the Trail-5 & 6 stating the reason that its land use was only permissible for official purposes of the Board whereas the latter had violated the condition by allowing residence to its staff.

Roy, Saud Shakeel power Quetta Gladiators to win against Peshawar Zalmi

0
LAHORE, Feb 18 (APP):A century stand of 157 in 92 balls between openers Jason Roy and Saud Shakeel helped Quetta Gladiators post a mammoth total of 206-5, which proved too big a target to overhaul for the Peshawar Zalmi batsmen who could score a brave 190-6 and lost the match by 16 runs in the HBL PSL 9 at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Sunday evening.
The Gladiators Jason Roy and Saud Shakeel used their bats as swords to cut through the Zalmi bowling and post first 200 plus total of the HBL PSL 9 on the board. Jason and Saud played identical knocks as they hit 75 (48) and 74 (47) runs respectively. They left little work for the rest of the batsmen as Sherfane Rutherford hit 20 runs off 13 balls while captain Rilee Rossouw managed 14 runs off 7 balls before he was bowled by debutant Muhmmad Zeeshan.
Asked to bast first by the Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam under overcast skies, Jason Roy and Saud Shakeel took full advantage of a placid batting-friendly pitch and put the Zalmi bowlers to the sword and they reached the first 50 in 28 balls while both the batsmen scored 100 partnership in 60 balls. Both the openers reached the third fifty partnership of the Quetta innings yet again in 28 balls as the team reached 150 runs in 14.2 overs.
Saim Ayub, who bats the middle order in the longer version of the game, was promoted to open the innings with the seasoned batsman Jason Roy and played an electric innings laced with six boundaries and four 6s. Similarly, Jason Roy smashed 11 hits across the fence including nine boundaries and two 6s in an innings. Saud Shakeel was adjudged Player of the Match for his scintilating knock of 74 runs.
The helter skelter Zalmi bowling attack lost the script from the beginning and they failed to impress and Babar had to ask part-timer Saim Ayub bowl three overs of off-break bowling (3-0-34-0) after Aamer Jamal conceded 29 runs in two overs. Aamer Jamal, batting all-rounder Dan Mousley and Saim Ayub conceded 95 runs off the eight over they bowled. Salman Irshad  (4-0-38-3) claimed three wickets for 38 runs while Luke Wood claimed one wicket for as 39 runs. Muhammad Zeeshan, who debuted for Peshawar Zalmi, took the maiden scalp for 38 runs.
Babar Azam, at the post-match press conference, accepted the fact that Peshawar Zalmi missed second specialist spinner in the team for the match.
Peshawar Zalmi looked well on way to chase down the huge target when openers Babar Azam and Saim Ayub scored 91 runs off 50 balls for the opening partnership and kept the required run-rate under control as long as Babar Azam was on the wicket. After Babar’s fall at the start of the 16th over with the team total at 147-3, Cadmore and Rovman Powell could not keep pace with the required run-rate. Cadmore departed in the same over when he fell to the guile of Abrar Ahmed.
Mohammad Amir, in the post-match press conference, said that the fall of Babar Azam and Tom Kohler-Cadmore in the 16th over was the turning point of the match and put Quetta Gladiators in charge.
Power-hitter Asif Ali came to the crease quite late and could score unbeaten 2 runs off 3 balls while Aamer Jamal hit 7 n.o.
Gladiators bowling proved too good to handle for the Zalmi batsmen in the end and the credit must go to Mohammad Amir, playing his first match for the Gladiators, who bowled with guile and control and conceded 29 runs in his quota of four overs besides claiming the vital scalp of Rovman Powell who scored 17 off 9 balls. Abrar Ahmed was the other successful bowler who bagged two wickets for 29 runs. Akeal Hosein and Muhmmad Wasim Jr. claimed one wicket each for 38 and 49 runs respectively. Muhammad Hasnain bowled four wicketless overs for 41 runs.
The third match of the HBL PSL 9 is scheduled to be played at the Multan Cricket Stadium between Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings at 7 p.m. tonight.

Addressing a press conference at his residence on Sunday, he said consultations with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for forming a government in centre was under way currently. “We have majority in Punjab where we are in a position to form the government alone, and the process for the purpose had started already.
He said Shehbaz Sharif would be the PML-N candidate for prime minister’s office. He said a coalition government in centre would unite people and work for development and prosperity of the country.

He said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had withdrawn from every slogan that they raised, which was proof of the contradiction in their words and actions. The PML-N leader said all government and party affairs would work under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif.
He advised that the political community should go beyond their personal interests and sacrifice for the country and the nation. He said that for political stability in the country, they should shun party politics and play a constructive role even if they sit in the opposition.
In response to a question, he said that there was no estrangement from Maulana Fazlur Rehman. “We still have a very good relationship with him,” he said and added that the Maulana was cooperating with the PTI now, but it was beyond understanding to unite or protest together with those who are the beneficiaries of the rigging.”
