0
ISLAMABAD, Feb 19 (APP):Director General Federal Government Employees Housing Authority (FGEHA) Captain (retired) Muhammad Zafar Iqbal on Monday informed the committee that the housing authority had launched 12 housing and apartment projects from 2001 to 2023, under which an amount of Rs. 56 billion had been collected so far.
During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Housing and Works held here under the chairmanship of Haji Hidayatullah Khan, the DG clarified that allocations had been made from those candidates who qualified for the relevant schemes.  However, he said, the Thallian Housing Scheme has been discontinued due to land-related issues,
and those who were allocated the plots, would be accommodated in the upcoming schemes according to the established criteria.  The chairman of the body while raising concerns over delay in the projects asked investigation into this matter.
Additionally, the chairperson requested the information regarding the financial and tangible advantages associated with the allotted plots. The officials from the Ministry of Housing and Works clarified that the delay in the projects stemmed from technical issues. One of the reason for the postponement of the two-day auction of class-III commercial plots in sector G-13/G-14 and the fuel station plot in the Mauve Area is that a writ petition was filed by Quaid-e-Azam University (Q.A.U), claiming a share in the sale proceeds from the auction of commercial plots in G-14/4 and the Mauve Area.
DG Zafar Iqbal further explained that they were compliant with the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) and were persistent in expediting the auction before Ramazan, but they were given two options either to dispose of this case or to give sufficient time to the university.
It was reported that G-14/1 and G-14/2 and G-14/3 are partially completed with an approved project cost of Rs. 6127.90 million for G-14/1 and Rs. 1499.43 million for G-14/2 and G-14/3, while G-15/3 is partially completed with 404 plots available for possession, and the approved cost of the project is Rs. 1,453.866 million.
They highlighted that the contract for the land in G-14-1, which is pending, has encountered significant Build up Property resulting in the cancellation of plots. However, they noted that 50 Kanal (1 percent) of G-14-1 has been cleared. Furthermore, they emphasized that G-14 has been allotted to the federal government, and the G-15 residential area has been reserved for the affectees. Additionally, they mentioned that the cost of planning and development has been levied on the affectees.
The committee members were provided record of Chaklala Heights, including its layout plan and details of consultant hiring and their current status. The DG FGEHA expressed that Chaklala is not a lucrative site, and its rates have also risen after COVID-19.
The chairman of the committee also inquired about the job quota, deputation rules, and the status of employees in FGEHA. Additionally, he also asked about the actions taken against officials involved in violating prescribed job quota.
Senators Saifullah Sarwar Khan Nyazee, Fida Muhammad, Khalida Ateeb, Saifullah Abro, Molana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Afnan Ullah Khan, the Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Works, DG FGEHA, and the senior officials from the Ministry of Housing and Works also participated in the meeting.

Ongoing rain spell to be beneficial for Rabi crops, particularly wheat: Experts

0

ISLAMABAD, Feb 19 (APP): The ongoing rain spell, which is forecast to persist till February 20, will benefit all Rabi crops, particularly wheat, besides improving environmental conditions.

According to agriculture experts and scientists, the current rain spell would positively impact the overall agricultural output, particularly the crops grown during the Rabi season including wheat which is the major cash crop of the season and vital source of staple food for the local population.

“The rains are expected to help increase wheat produce in the rain-fed areas across the country, as well as oil seeds like mustard and canola. Besides, they will have a positive impact on the output of seasonal vegetables to fulfill local requirements,” the experts said.

They view that the rains will particularly help enhance wheat output in the Potohar region and other rain-fed areas across the country where a considerable number of small farmers engage in cultivating various crops and seasonal vegetables.

The Member Plant Science in Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC), Dr Imtiaz, told APP on Monday that the current rain spell would likely to transform the agricultural landscape, particularly the crops like wheat that were currently at crucial stages of development.

“As wheat plants approach the booting stage and edge closer to heading, their need for adequate moisture intensifies to support robust growth and development,” he said, adding that the ongoing rainfall seemed to be a timely intervention, providing the essential hydration required for the plants to thrive.

At the booting stage, he said, “the wheat plants begin to form their reproductive structures, setting the stage for the eventual formation of grains. Adequate moisture during this period is instrumental in ensuring optimal development of the reproductive organs, leading to a higher potential for grain formation and consequently, increased yield.

“It will help moisture the lands in arid areas where wheat, vegetables and fodder-like seasonal crops are cultivated and consequently help get the Rabi crops set targets,” he said.

Dr Imtiaz said the rain spell would also help reduce environmental pollution and have a positive impact on human health as well.

He further informed that the current downpour would also have a positive impact on the sugarcane crops. A similar amount of rain at the end of February would also greatly benefit the overall agriculture output and augment the farm income, he added.

Commenting on the impacts of rains on local agriculture and livestock sectors, Food Security Commissioner in the Ministry of National Food Security and Research Imtiaz Ahmad Gopang said that the recent spells of rain had the potential to catalyze the production of Rabi crops, particularly wheat in the Potohar region.

He said that the moisture from the ongoing showers was poised to invigorate the growth of Rabi crops, fostering healthier plants and potentially enhancing yield prospects.

He said that the inclusion of snowfall in certain areas added another layer of benefit. “As the snow melts, it contributes to the replenishment of water sources, bolstering irrigation reserves that are crucial for sustaining agriculture during the dry spells that often accompany the transition to the Kharif season.”

It is worth mentioning here that for the current Rabi season, the government has set the wheat production target at 32.2 million tons from an area of 8.9 million hectares of land.

Pakistan’s fair, smooth general elections fully reflect will of people: Cheng Xizhong

0

BEIJING, Feb 19 (APP): Pakistan’s recent general elections for the national and provincial assemblies were held in a fair, smooth, secure and successful and fully reflected the will of the people, Cheng Xizhong, Visiting Professor of Southwest University of Political Science and Law said on Monday.

“This general election in Pakistan may be summarized in four words: fair, smooth, secure and successful. In particular, Pakistan security forces have successfully thwarted attempts by the regional power to disrupt this general election,” he said in a statement.

He said that the general election held in Pakistan fully reflected the will of the people.

Now, some external forces accused the Pakistani general election of misappropriation and unfairness, which was completely groundless, he said, adding, this was interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs and did not comply with the principle of the United Nations Charter.

Prof Cheng remarked that the Pakistani people had great hopes for post-election political stability, economic development and improvement in people’s livelihoods.

He said main political parties in Pakistan were all very mature and China fully believed that they would put the interests of the people above everything else, adding all political parties, whether in power or opposition, they would unite and work together for a better Pakistan.

He opined that the street movement of any political party was detrimental to the fundamental interests of the Pakistani people.

As an iron brother, China hoped to see a secure, stable, developing and prosperous Pakistan, he added.

The main responsibility of the ruling parties and the opposition parties should be cooperation rather than confrontation, as confrontation was not in line with democratic spirit, and consultation was in line with democratic spirit, he added.
