Gujranwala division commissioner chairs district anti-polio committee meeting

SIALKOT, Feb 21 (APP):Gujranwala Division Commissioner Naveed Haider Shirazi chaired the district anti-polio committee meeting here on Wednesday.
addressing the meeting, he said the polio virus had completely been eradicated from most parts of the world, Pakistan was still afflicted with the crippling disease. He said there is an urgent need to work on war footing for eradicating the virus through immunization. He said the national anti-polio campaign would be launched in the division from February 26. During the five-day anti-polio campaign, workers of the Health Department would go door-to-door and administer polio drops to every child under five years of age.
He reviewed final preparations and micro-plan of the national polio campaign in the meeting, attended by Deputy Commissioner Sialkot Muhammad Zulqarnain, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) General Syed Asad Raza Kazmi, CEO Health Dr. Rehan Azhar, DHO Dr. Waseem Mirza, World Health Organisation Representative Dr. Yasir, Director NCHD Dr. Adnan, Dr. Shahzad Iqbal, Dr. Shiraz Masood and the local officials of the relevant departments.
The commissioner directed the local officials to make the polio teams realise importance and effectiveness of the campaign. He said the government was spending billions of rupees to eradicate polio, and it was responsibility of officials as well as parents to uproot polio from the country. He said polio teams would be monitored on GIS and a foolproof security plan would be made with the help of the law-enforcement agencies to protect them.
He said that during the national anti-polio campaign, the teams would trace the missing children in any case, and children without physical verification would not be removed from the list of unavailable children.
Deputy Commissioner Sialkot Muhammad Zulqarnain told the commissioner that during the 5-day anti-polio campaign in Sialkot district, the teams had set a target of immunising a total of 795,877 children. To achieve the target, a total of 6,288 polio workers and staff would perform their duties. He said that 2,676 mobile teams would go to homes, schools and madrasas, 133 fixed teams would visit rural and primary health centres, dispensaries, EPI centres and hospitals. While 69 roaming/transit teams would perform the national duty at lorry addas, bus stops and important squares and markets.
The deputy commissioner said that 129 union council monitoring officers and 536 area in-charges would perform duties to monitor the campaign, assistant commissioners and deputy DHOs in all four tehsils would jointly supervise the campaign.
The commissioner awarded certificates of appreciation to eight polio workers and supervisors who performed the best in the previous polio campaign.

Scholarships awarded among 61 GCWUS students

SIALKOT, Feb 21 (APP):Vice Chancellor (VC) Government College Women University Sialkot (GCWUS) Prof. Dr. Zarrin Fatima Rizvi distributed cheques of HEC Need Based Scholarship (NBS) of Rs. 2,463,733/- among 61 deserving students of BS programs.
According to GCWUS, NBS scholarship focal person Mr. Ijaz Ahmad, Convener Financial Aid Committee Dr. Yasin Munir, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Yasir Nawaz Manj and Sadia Jamil from the Financial Aid office were present at the distribution ceremony.
The Vice Chancellor truly appreciated the efforts of the Financial Aid Committee.She said that the students should positively utilize the opportunity and use their energies to get better results. “Women of our society should get education as it would help to build a strong nation”,she added.

Three gamblers held

MUZAFFARGARH, Feb 21 (APP): Police claimed to have arrested three gamblers with stake money recovered from their possession.
According to the spokesman, the accused were identified as Atif, Ishtiaq and Shehzad.
They were arrested from a deserted location in the jurisdiction of Kot Addu city police station.

Stake money worth Rs. 16500 was taken into custody by the police after the raid. SHO appealed to the people to cooperate with the police to find out and fix the dens of such kinds of crimes. He said the police was determined to maintain peace in society and protection of people.

Police arrest five kite makers, sellers with a large number of kites

RAWALPINDI, Feb 21 (APP):Rawalpindi District Police on the directives of City Police Officer, Rawalpindi are making efforts to control kite flying and managed to arrest five kite makers and sellers on recovery of a large number of kites, string rolls and kites making material, said a police spokesman here on Wednesday.
He informed, Waris Khan Police conducted a raid and arrested five accused namely Semab alias Mani King, Shahzaib, Ibrahim,Numan and Zubair and recovered a large number of kites and kites making material from their possession.
Superintendent of Police, Rawal, Faisal Saleem said the operation against the rules violators would continue without any discrimination.
The spokesman said that the Divisional Superintendents of Police had directed the police teams to accelerate operations against kite sellers and flyers.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Operations Rawalpindi said that strict action in accordance with the law would be taken against the violators and they would be sent behind the bars.

PESCO imposes Rs 6.987mln fine on 247 power pilferers

PESHAWAR, Feb 21 (APP):Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) teams imposed Rs 6.987 million penalty on 247 power pilferers during crackdowns against electricity theft.
Cases registered against 17 electricity thieves, while one held on the spot.
77 electricity thieves identified in Peshawar circle, 51 in Khyber circle, 29 in Mardan circle, 54  in Bannu circle, 22 in DI Khan circle and 16 in Swabi.

IT exports up by 39% in January: Minister

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21 (APP):Caretaker Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Dr Umar Saif has said that IT exports in January witnessed an increase of 39.4 per cent to $265 million compared to $190 million in the same month of the last fiscal year.
 “Pakistan’s IT industry continues to grow and sets new records. IT exports in January are up by 39.4 per cent to $265 million, compared to $190 million in the same month in 2023,” the minister posted on X.
Additionally, the minister disclosed that IT exports during the first seven months of the current fiscal year (July-January) reached $1.7 billion, marking a 13 per cent increase from $1.5 billion in the corresponding period of the last year.

PDMA issues weather warning

LAHORE, Feb 21 (APP):Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Imran Qureshi has issued a warning to all departments concerned in the wake of expected heavy rainfall, storm and more snowfall in Murree, Galyat and surrounding areas in the last week of February.
He called upon the departments to get ready to deal with any weather-related emergency. He directed the traffic police and authorities concerned for providing optimal services with special attention for tourists’ facilities during this period of time.
Qureshi urged tourists to consider weather conditions while planning a trip to these areas. In case of any emergency, they may contact PDMA helpline at 1129 while for Murree administration’s control room, they may contact the authorities on telephone number 0519269015, 0519269016 and 0519269018.

Police arrest two bike lifters with four stolen motorcycles

RAWALPINDI, Feb 21 (APP): Police have arrested two bike lifters and recovered four stolen motorcycles from their possession, said a Police spokesman here on Wednesday.

He informed that a team under the supervision of SHO, Dhamial Police Station managed to net two bike lifters namely Aliya Pitras and Ehtesham and recovered four stolen motorcycles and other items from their possession.

A case has been registered against the accused while further investigation is underway.

Superintendent of Police, Saddar Muhammad Nabeel Khokhar said the accomplices and facilitators of the accused would also be sent behind bars.

KPCTA to start Takht Bhai Safari Train from March 3

PESHAWAR, Feb 21 (APP):Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA) have announced to start Takht Bhai Train Safari for tourists from March 3.
It is the first tour that was arranged by KPCTA to take tourists to UNESCO heritage sites situated in KP.
In first phase, about 130 tourist families would be taken to Peshawar Saddar Railway Station at 9:00 AM from where they would proceed to historic places including City Railway Station, Nasirpur, Pabbi, Nowshera and Mardan.
Tourists would also be taken for a visit to Takht Bhai relics where they would be briefed about historic facts about ancient Buddhist worship places.
A guide tour would also be arranged for orientation of women and families about relics of Buddha era. The tourist would be welcomed at Saddar Railway Station by traditional music and they were provided information about Buddha architecture during their journey.
