Over 10 million children to be immunized in Sindh

KARACHI, Feb 22 (APP):The Caretaker Health Minister of Sindh Dr Saad Khalid Niaz on Thursday said a week-long anti-polio campaign will be started in February across the province during which around 10.6 million children under 5 years of age will be immunized by administering polio drops.

According to a statement issued here on Thursday, the Caretaker Health Minister said children aged 6 months to 5 years would be provided Vitamin A dose to boost their immunity.

Dr Saad Niaz said 70,000 teams were formed to achieve the 100 percent target of polio immunization across the province. He said the campaign will be continued till March 3, 2024.

To ensure foolproof security of polio teams, 3700 cops would be deployed, the Health Minister said adding that polio is incurable and the only way to stop it from spreading is to ensure vaccination of the children.

He said the parents and teachers should cooperate with the polio teams in this regard to ensure that children could be saved from this dangerous virus.

Fertilizers imports decreases 2.81% in 07 months

ISLAMABAD, Feb 22 (APP): Fertilizer imports into the country during the first 07 months of the current financial year decreased by 2.81 per cent as compared to the imports of the corresponding period of the last year.

During the period from July-January, 2023-24 over 990,686 metric tons of fertilizers cost $493.618 million imported as against the imports of 746,595 metric tons valued at $507.868 million of the same period of last year.

Meanwhile, the imports of insecticides decreased by 2.19 per cent as 20,996 metric tons of insecticides valued at $112.101 million were imported to fulfill local agriculture sector requirements as compared to the imports of 22,246 metric tons worth $114.522 million of the same period of last year.

During the period under review, the medicinal products worth 633.722 million also imported as compared the imports of $838.565 million of the same period last year.

During the period under review, the imports of medicinal products went down by 24.43 per cent as compared to the imports of the corresponding period of the last year.

In the last 07 months, the imports of agricultural and other chemicals into the country registered about a 12.82 per cent decrease as it came down from $5.826 billion to $5.079 billion during the period under review.

However, Tractor assembling in the country during the first two quarters of the current financial year increased by 67.21 per cent as to the output of the corresponding period of the last year.

During the period from July-December, 2023 about 23,695 tractors were locally assembled as compared to the assembling of 14,171 tractors of the same period of last year.

As compared to the corresponding month of the last year, tractor production in December 2023 grew by 141.43 per cent as 2,675 tractors were locally assembled as compared to the production of 1,108 tractors in the same month of the last year.

Delay in issuance of Passport: Mohtasib takes strict notice

ISLAMABAD, Feb 22 (APP): Expressing his deep concern over the persistent complaints of irregularities, malpractices, inordinate delays, and unsatisfactory facilities at the Passport Offices for the general public, the Wafaqi Mohtasib, Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi has directed immediate inspection by the Wafaqi Mohtasib’s Inspection Teams at Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar and other major cities.
He directed to look into these complaints and suggested urgent remedial measures.
It may be recalled that taking suo moto notice of a large number of complaints against the delay in the issuance of passports, an Inspection Team from the WMS had earlier visited the Passport Office Islamabad on the directions of the Wafaqi Mohtasib to ascertain the causes of the delay and breakdown of the efficient delivery services there.
The Compliance Report submitted by the Passport Office as a follow-up was termed as unsatisfactory and lacking in substance by the Wafaqi Mohtasib.
The Wafaqi Mohtasib said that the Overseas Pakistanis are the worst sufferers in the entire episode as in several cases either their visas expired or they have been unable to join their jobs abroad owing to this state of affairs.
The same is the case with those who want to proceed abroad in connection with their higher studies or family visits etc.
He said that the elements found responsible for creating artificial shortages and indulging in malpractices and other irregularities need to be exposed and dealt with an iron hand to ensure that things would run smoothly in the respective Passport Offices.

One killed, another injured as Truck falls into ravine

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Feb 22 (APP): A man was killed and another got wounded when a truck plunged into ravine here at Srey-Khawrey area of Sub-Division Darazinda.
According to Rescue 1122 spokesman, a Ghee-loaded truck coming from Quetta skidded off the road and fell into a ravine. As a result, 30-year-old Rauf resident of Landi-Kotel was killed and 30-year-old Malik Sher got injured.
The medical and Disaster Rescue teams of Rescue 1122 immediately reached the site and recovered the body and injured by using modern equipments. The dead and injured were shifted to Darazinda hospital after provision of first aid.
