TBM, Ericsson extend partnership to expand services

ISLAMABAD, Feb 22 (APP):Telenor Microfinance Bank (TMB) and Ericsson Wallet Platform have extended their partnership to propel Easypaisa’s financial services and expand their service portfolio within the financial technology (fintech) sector.
According to a press release on Thursday, Ericsson will support TMB by providing its leading fintech solutions whereas Ericsson Wallet Platform will help with innovative new digital financial services.
Commenting on the recent development,  Acting Chief Executive Officer and President, TMB & Easypaisa Kashif Ahmed said that TMB and Easypaisa are committed to enabling a financially inclusive and empowered Pakistan.
“With our state-of-the-art in-house technology, powered by the Ericsson Wallet Platform, we aim to position ourselves as a leading Digital Bank providing a spectrum of new and innovative digital financial services for millions of Pakistanis”, he added.
With this strategic collaboration, he said that the unified goal is to reshape the financial landscape across the country and develop an inclusive ecosystem that benefits the entire country.
Head of Mobile Financial Services of Ericsson, Michael Wallis-Brown said that Ericsson Wallet Platform supports over 400 million registered mobile wallets and processes more than 2.8 billion transactions worth over USD 40 billion monthly through communication service providers and financial institutions globally. “Our partnership with Telenor Microfinance Bank signifies a shared vision to intensify efforts to accelerate fintech innovation, contributing to financial inclusion and empowerment in Pakistan”, he added.
Leveraging the Ericsson Wallet Platform, he said that the organization aims to connect easypaisa customers with banking and advanced fintech services, providing transformative technologies to enhance capabilities and offering secure, user-friendly Easypaisa services and mobile financial offerings.

91 power pilferers nabbed across MEPCO region

MULTAN, Feb 22 (APP):Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) teams have raided and caught 91 more power pilferers in a day during ongoing operation across the region here on Thursday.
The task force teams have raided various places and registered 46 new cases against power pilferers and 11 were caught with red-handed.
Over Rs 5.3 million fine was imposed on power pilferers.

1094 vehicles impounded, documents of 949 vehicles seized during road checking drive

KARACHI, Feb 22 (APP):As many as 1094 vehicles were impounded while the documents of 949 vehicles were seized during road checking campaign of Sindh Excise and Taxation department to collect tax from owners of tax defaulting vehicles.
A total of 9429 vehicles were checked till the third day of the campaign, said a statement on Thursday.
According to the details, 2367 vehicles were checked in Karachi, 2627 in Hyderabad, 1521 in Sukkur, 1306 in Larkana, 930 in Mirpur Khas and 678 vehicles were checked in Shaheed Benazirabad till the end of the third day of the road checking campaign.
So far, a total of more than nine million rupees tax has been collected.
Meanwhile, Director General Excise and Taxation Sindh Aurangzeb Panhoor has said that the road checking campaign to collect tax from tax defaulting vehicles will continue till March 7 and owners of tax defaulting vehicles should deposit their taxes immediately to avoid any untoward situation.

Pakistan outplay India in first match

ISLAMABAD, Feb 22 (APP): Pakistan downed India by five wickets in the first match of the Pakistan-India Blind Cricket series at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket Academy Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday.

Naima Alvi Bawany, the daughter of the President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi, flicked the coin for toss of the Pakistan-India clash.

Pakistan’s Captain Nisar Ali won the toss and opted to put India in to bat first. Pakistan’s bowler Badar Munir made an early breakthrough by dismissing the dangerous Sunil Ramesh in the third over. Despite this, India managed to set a competitive total of 213 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Indian captain Dargah Rao contributed with 61 runs off 42 balls, while Venkatesh Rao scored 49 runs off 37 balls. Pakistan’s bowlers Badar Munir and Kamran Akhter claimed 2 wickets each.

In reply, Pakistan faced early setbacks, losing a couple of wickets, including Captain Nisar Ali who scored 18 runs off 11 balls. However, Badar Munir led the charge with an exceptional innings, guiding Pakistan to chase down the target of 214 runs in the 20th over with 5 wickets in hand. Badar Munir’s unbeaten knock of 129 runs off 63 balls, including 5 sixes and 18 fours, proved decisive. Indian bowlers Durga Rao Parsaad and Nakulabadanayak managed to take one wicket each. Badar Munir was declared Man of the Match.

With this win, Pakistan takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match T-20 series. The second match is scheduled to take place on February 23, 2024, at the same venue.

It may be mentioned that the said series was a Triangular Blind Cricket T20 cricket series to be played between Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. But as Sri Lankan team missed the series due to non-issuance of NOC on time, therefore it was turned into India-Pakistan blind cricket series.

Caretaker setup leaves behind useful strategy safeguarding national interests: PM

ISLAMABAD, Feb 22 (APP):Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Thursday said the caretaker setup in a short span of time had left behind a useful strategy for the upcoming elected government that would ensure public welfare and protect national interests.

“The caretaker government always gave priority to national interests while taking policy decisions as it believed to work together for national stability and development,” the prime minister said while chairing a meeting of the federal cabinet at Prime Minister office.

He said the government had improved the national economy, saying “we are leaving country’s economy in a better condition than before”.

He appreciated and thanked his cabinet members and the civil servants for their tireless efforts during short tenure of the government.

The federal cabinet expressed satisfaction over the steps taken by the caretaker government regarding restructuring of various institutions, promotion of foreign investment and providing facilities to businesses.

Appreciating the prudent leadership of Prime Minister Kakar on behalf of the federal bureaucracy, the cabinet secretary said that he had taken important difficult decisions in the interest of the country, which will have far-reaching results.

Among other agenda items, the cabinet, on the recommendation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, allowed Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir NI (M) to receive the “Turkish Armed Forces Legion of Merit” awarded by Turkiye in honor of his services regarding cooperation between the armed forces of Pakistan and Turkiye.

On the recommendation of ministry of finance, the cabinet also approved the extension of deputation period of Lubna Farooq Malik as Director General Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU) from June 9, 2023 to June 8, 2024.

The cabinet, on the recommendation of ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFS&R), approved the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MNFS&R Pakistan and Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agriculture Innovation.

Under this MoU, the first Pakistan International Date Palm Festival will be held by September, 2024 to promote date production in the country.

The cabinet approved the decisions taken in the meetings of the Economic Coordination Committee held on February 13, 2024 and February 14, 2024.

The cabinet also approved the decisions made in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee for State Owned Enterprises held on February 16, 2024.

The Federal Cabinet ratified the decisions taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases held on February 16, 2024.

Senate body approves amendment in Pakistan Penal Code

ISLAMABAD, Feb 22 (APP): Senate Standing Committee on Interior on Thursday unanimously passed the Bill further to amend the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860 and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898 [The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024].

The committee passed the bill unanimously emphasizing the preservation of the right of dignity of the human corpse. The bill was passed with the increase of fine to 5 hundred thousand rupees.

However, the Bill further to amend the Prevention and Control of Human Trafficking Ordinance, 2002 [The Prevention and Control of Human Trafficking (Amendment) Bill, 2024] introduced by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri on Amendments in Sections 3, 4 & 5 of the Ordinance was withdrawn by the mover as the Ordinance in which the amendment was being proposed has already been repealed by an Act of Parliament in the year 2018.

The Bill further to amend the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860 and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898 [The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024] introduced by Senator Shahadat Awan on 1 January, 2024.

(Amendments in Sections 292, 293, & 294 of PPC and subsequent amendment in Cr.P.C). was also passed by the committee.

The chairman committee however was of the view that the enhancement of sentences as proposed by the Mover are not reasonable as the same will be misused. The bill however was passed with amendments.

The Bill further amended the Code of Criminal Procedure. 1898 [The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2024] introduced by Senator Shahadat Awan on 1 January, 2024. (Amendments in Sections 513 and 514 of Cr.P.C) was deferred.

Additionally the Bill further to amend the National Database and Registration Authority Ordinance, 2000 [The National Database and Registration Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023], introduced by Senator Fawzia Arshad on 6th November, 2023 was also passed by the committee with amendments.

The committee also discussed at length the point of public importance raised by Senator Danesh Kumar regarding the problems/humiliation being faced by the commuters/travelers from different areas of Balochistan to Karachi via Hub Chowki at check posts of various agencies including Sindh Police, Pakistan Rangers, Customs Police etc., on the pretext of security checking. After due deliberation the committee recommended to establish a joint check post and directed all relevant stake agencies including customs, rangers and police to develope consensus on one window operation.

Similarly the point of public importance raised by Senator Danesh Kumar regarding the demolition of a Hindu Temple in Mithi District of Tharparkar by the District Administration was also discussed in detailed.

The chairman committee after due deliberation recommended that if the district administration can demolish the temple on the pretext of encroached land then similar treatment should also be done to the person who has encroached the state land and included it in his house.

The committee was attended by Senator Saifullah Abro, Senator Danesh kumar, Senator Fawzia Arshad, Senator kamil Ali Agha, Senator Shahadat Awan, Senator Waqar Mehdi, and Senator Aon Abbas. Senior Officials from the Ministry and other relevant department were also in attendance.
