Sports indispensable for mental, physical development: GCUF VC

FAISALABAD, Feb 15 (APP):Pakistan Sports Board Deputy Director General Shahid Islam called on Vice-Chancellor Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) Prof Dr. Nasir Amin at his office here on Thursday.
The matters regarding the promotion of extracurricular activities especially promotion of sports in the university were discussed.
During the meeting, it was decided to organize sports activities in the university in the near future with the support of the Pakistan Sports Board to encourage the players.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nasir Amin said that participation in sports was indispensable for mental and physical development because it promoted the spirit of competition among students, which not only had positive impacts on human health, but also helped in character building and improving mental as well as better thinking approach of the youth.
He said that the city of Faisalabad had produced numerous national level players who had made the country famous not only at the national but also at the international level.
In the meeting, GC University Director Sports Zeeshan Ahmed Khan informed about the recent steps taken regarding sports activities and promotion of sports.

FDA sports complex’s membership starts

FAISALABAD, Feb 15 (APP):The membership for FDA sports complex has started for which the membership forms are available in the office of sports complex, Sargodha Road.
In this regard, a meeting was held in the chairmanship of Commissioner Silwat Saeed, here on Thursday, during which Director General FDA Mohammad Asif Chaudhry briefed about the administrative affairs of the sports complex.
The commissioner directed for functionalising the complex immediately as well as posting of coaches/instructors without delay. She nominated DG FDA as the Secretary of the Sports Complex Management Committee.
Director General FDA said that according to the decision of the management committee, the membership forms will be available against Rs 5,000 per form.
The membership fee for first 100 members will be Rs 200,000 each member after that fee for next 500 members will be charged Rs 400,000 each member.
According to the monthly packages for different games, the fixed monthly charge will be Rs 2000, while for all indoor games the fee will be Rs 7,000 per month. Rs 1200 will be for one game, Rs 10,000 for all indoor games for families and special fee for gymnasium will be Rs 3,000.
The sports complex has separate facilities for men and women including gymnasium, swimming pools, badminton courts, table tennis, squash, basketball, tennis lawn, snooker, chess, carom, play area for children, 1450 feet long jogging rack, parking area, kitchen, dining hall, toilets blocks with changing rooms and other recreational facilities.

LESCO collects over Rs 105m from 2,070 defaulters

LAHORE, Feb 15 (APP):The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), in collaboration with Tehsildars (Recovery), has recovered more than Rs 105 million from  2,070 chronic defaulters in its five districts – Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur and Okara – on the 151st day of its recovery campaign.
A LESCO spokesman told the media here on Thursday that on the 151st day, Chief Engineer O&M (T&G) Zafar Iqbal with the support of Tehsildar City Mujahid Zia and Tehsildar Shalimar Noreez Humayun recovered outstanding dues of Rs 21.40 million from 241 defaulters in Northern Circle and Rs 21.07 million from 126 defaulters in Eastern Circle respectively. Similarly, LESCO Manager (Material Disposal) Engineer Anwar Watto along with Tehsildar Model Town Rana Arsal and Tehsildar Cant. Sajjad Qureshi recovered Rs 16.30 million from 259 defaulters in Central Circle, and Rs 7.54 million from 151 defaulters in South Circle; while Manager (Technical) Engineer Muhammad Farooq with the assistance of Tehsildar Nankana Sahib Muhammad Iqbal Rasheed and Tehsildar Sheikhupura Muhammad Aslam Gujjar recovered Rs 0.35 million from 13 defaulters in Nankana Circle and Rs 3.75 million from 63 defaulters in Sheikhupura Circle. He added that LESCO Manager E&S (PMU) Engineer Abbas Ali in collaboration with Naib Tehsildar Kasur and Okara Mirza Zahid Baig recovered outstanding dues of Rs 15.97 million from 523 defaulters in Okara Circle and Rs 19.18 million from 694 defaulters in Kasur Circle.
Up till now during the recovery campaign, the LESCO with the help of Tehsildars (Recovery) recovered more than Rs 2.44 billion from 81,437 dead defaulters in its all circles of operation. He elaborated that LESCO recovered outstanding dues of Rs 350.01 million from 11,461 defaulters in Northern Circle; Rs 577.38 million from 10,437 defaulters in Eastern Circle; Rs 330.65 million from 9,268 defaulters in Central Circle; Rs 136.67 million from 4,776 defaulters in South Circle, Rs 204.10 million from 7,146 defaulters in Nankana Circle; Rs 358.20 million from 9,899 defaulters in Sheikhupura Circle; Rs 156.03 million from 13,036 defaulters in Okara Circle and Rs 335.95 million from 15,414 defaulters in Kasur Circle.
For the recovery campaign started on September 13, the Lahore Division’s Commissioner had assigned additional charge of Tehsildar Recovery (from LESCO defaulters) to relevant Tehsildar, while LESCO Chief Executive Officer Engineer Shahid Haidar has also designated four senior officers to assist them in the dues recovery from defaulters. LESCO Chief Executive Officer Engineer Shahid Haider said that the company is facing loss due to dead defaulters, and vowed to continue action against them.

KMC Council to meet on Feb 22

KARACHI, Feb 15 (APP):Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab will chair the general body meeting of the council of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation on February 22, at 2:30 pm in the council hall of the KMC Building.
The agenda of the meeting has the approval of various matters including awarding of Tamgha-e-Karachi with cash reward to those who have extraordinarily served this city, improvement in the services of hospitals of KMC under public-private partnership, renovation of parks and installation of solar systems in the KMC parks, collection of valet parking fee Charged Parking department, up gradation and re-designation of  the posts of Program officer(BS-17) established in the schedule of Establishment of KMC, which is a dead cadre post, as Senior Program Officer (BS-18), Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Karachi’s Pediatric Department to be renamed as Wasila Jahan Department of Pediatrics, KMC, amendment in the method of recruitment of Pesh Imam in KMC.
An increase in the imprest account for the Deputy Mayor Secretariat, office of the Financial Advisor, KMC and the City Institute of Image Management (CIIM) are also part of the agenda. Besides this other issues will be presented in the meeting with permission of the chair.

DC stresses to devise effective micro plan for Polio campaign

RAWALPINDI, Feb 15 (APP):Deputy Commissioner Waqar Hassan Cheema has called upon the health officials to devise a comprehensive micro plan and data collection so that effective measures can be taken during the second polio immunization drive to be started on February 26 in the district.
Chairing a meeting to review anti-polio arrangements, he directed the officials concerned to encourage polio teams to report accurate data so that data misreporting was discouraged.
“To stop virus spread and reduce immunity gaps, district health authority needed to focus on coverage of all children by reducing the percentage of missed children”.
Waqar further directed to remain vigilant, particularly in those areas where polio-virus was found during the last campaign.
He urged the citizens, particularly the parents, to come forward and play their role in the elimination of the crippling disease from society. “The parents should cooperate with the special teams so that the set target can be achieved”.
Meanwhile, District Superintendent Vaccination Dr Muhammad Nadeem of District Health Authority told APP that as many as 4,199 polio teams would go door-to-door and administer polio drops to 10,15,262 children less than five years of age in all tehsils and union councils of the district.
He informed 243 Union Council Medical Officers and 858 area incharges would also participate in the drive. In addition, “361 fix centers will be set up to administer the drops”.
Dr Nadim added that anti-polio drops would also be administered at 182 transit points while teams would also be deputed at toll plazas so that no child could miss immunization.

Naval Chief oversees conduct of Exercise Seaspark 2024

RAWALPINDI, Feb 15 (APP): Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf on Thursday visited naval ships at sea, creeks areas on the coastal belt of Sindh and coastal areas of Balochistan to oversee the conduct of Exercise Seaspark 2024 and meet the deployed troops in the exercise.

Exercise Seaspark 2024 is a major maritime exercise of Pakistan Navy (PN) which is regularly conducted after every two years on two force concept i.e. Blue Force (own force) and Orange Force (enemy force). The purpose of the exercise is to plan and conduct naval operations as per wartime procedures to check operational readiness, major mobilisation of personnel and practice coordination between various elements of PN to undertake complex operations, an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) news release said.

During the operations at sea, the PN warships and aircraft also detected Indian Navy ships, submarines and aircraft, attempting to covertly observe the exercise and interpret PN war plans. Accordingly, necessary safeguards were taken by the PN.

During the visit of Maritime Headquarters at Karachi, the Chief of the Naval Staff was given a briefing by the Orange and Blue Naval Force Commanders on the conduct of operations by the respective forces.

Thereafter, the Naval Chief visited Keti Bandar Post and Battalion Headquarters of Pak Marines at Shah Bandar where he was briefed on combat readiness for defence of Creeks areas which constitutes the South Eastern maritime boundary with India.

During the visit, the Naval Chief interacted with the troops deployed in difficult marshy areas and appreciated their devotion and high morale.

Later on, the Naval Chief also visited Jinnah Naval Base at Ormara and naval ships operating at sea. During the visits, the CNS expressed his satisfaction on the professional excellence, high morale and perpetual readiness of the Pakistan Navy to ensure impregnable maritime defence of motherland and reaffirmed its resolve to safeguard national maritime interests.

Soybean promotion imperative to cut $1200m import bill

FAISALABAD, Feb 15 (APP):The agriculture experts said that promotion of soybean cultivation was imperative to curtail soybean import bill worth $1200 million.
They were addressing the soybean conference arranged at the Center for Advanced Studies in Agriculture and Food Security, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) here on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that the UAF would establish 1000 demonstration/ trial spots of high-yielding soybean at farmer’s fields this year while last year, 170 farms were demonstrated in a bid to encourage the crop cultivation.
He said that China is the world’s largest importer of the soybean whereas the US is the largest exporter of this commodity.
He said that Pakistan is importing essential commodities worth $10 billion per annum and half of this import comprises of edible oil.
He said that cultivation of the soybean would address the nutrition crisis. India, in order to promote the local soybean cultivation, imposed the import duty on this commodity and we should also adopt such strategy, he added.
He said that soybeans are a major global commodity and contribute significantly to international trade. Soybeans are an excellent source of protein and source of vegetable oil worldwide.
He said that UAF established soybean farms across the country and soybean can be cultivated in Pakistan with different varieties.
He said that the industry should take the lead for its promotion and address the market issue.
He said that we have to curtail the misconception about GM crops prevailing in some segments of society. The GM/non GM both varieties will help address the challenges of food insecurity. The law of the land permits introduction of GM-crops including soybean. There are unfair hurdles that need to be removed on urgent basis, he added.
Director CAS Dr Sultan Habib Ullah said that the university was taking the technologies to the farmers’ field so as to strengthen the sector with scientific work. The tangible research work on agriculture was being carried out that will help food security, he added.
Dr Zaheer Ahmed said that the university was working on 5000 lines of the soybean. He said that soybeans can be cultivated in different environments and soils of the world. However, genetic screening is required on demand. He said that soybean can be cultivated in the different seasons in Pakistan.
He said that in summer, the sowing should be carried in standing water. He added that a maximum yield of more than 50 mounds can be achieved. It can be grown all over Pakistan. He said that every year 10 farmers will be added at each demonstration site under the ongoing soybean campaign by UAF.
President Anjuman-e-Kashtkaran Punjab Rana Iftikhar Muhammad said that if the demands of soybeans are met at the local level, it will improve the performance of the poultry industry.
Pakistan Agriculture Research Council In-Charge Oil Seed Dr. Mohammad Arshad, emphasized joint efforts to tackle agricultural challenges by strengthening linkages between industry and research institutions.
Chairman Kissan Ittehad Council Shaukat said that food security should be ensured by developing agriculture on a scientific basis while solving farmers’ problems.
Mumtaz Feed CEO Amir Mumtaz and Jahangir from APSEA, CEO Soybean Oak China Center, Dr Khalid Shouq and also other notables also spoke.
The different organizations, businessmen, industrialists and progressive farmers participated in the conference whereas soybean valued added food product exhibition was put on display that remained a center for attraction for the food lovers.
Dr Ahmad Din supervised the exhibition and said that the demonstration at the farmer fields will prove a millstone to flourish the crop at the national level.

May-9 case: ATC allows attachment of 9 PTI leaders’ properties

LAHORE, Feb 15 (APP):An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday allowed attachment of moveable and immoveable properties of nine absconding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in a case of torching police vehicles near Rahat Bakery Chowk, during May 9 riots.
The leaders include Azam Khan Swati, Muhammad Zubair Khan Niazi, Murad Saeed, Hammad Azhar, Mian Aslam Iqbal, Imtiaz Ahmad Sheikh, Hafiz Farhat Abbas, Wasiq Qayyum Abbasi, and Hamid Raza.
ATC Judge Muhammad Naveed Iqbal passed the orders on an application, filed by the police for the purpose. The investigation officer had submitted the application, stating that the accused were absconding to avoid arrest in the case. He pleaded with the court to allow attachment of properties of the accused.
The Sarwar Road police had registered a case against the PTI leaders and workers for torching police vehicles near Rahat bakery in cantonment area on May 9.

Pak IT companies to contribute 3.1b USD in 2024

LAHORE, Feb 15 (APP):Experts at the Information Technology Career Fair have said that Pakistan’s IT companies based on services and products will contribute 3.1 billion dollars in 2024.
The 13th Career Fair was organized by Punjab University Faculty of Computing & Information Technology (FCIT), sponsored by Dubizzle Labs here on Thursday. More than 65 leading IT companies from the software industry set up their stalls to hire the graduates of FCIT from a batch of around 500 coming from domains of computer science, software engineering and information technology. PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, FCIT Dean Prof Dr Shahzad Sarwar, faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion.
Addressing the ceremony, PU VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood said, “We all have to play our role to get Pakistan out of the crisis.” He praised the organizers for providing the best career opportunity to the students. Students at the career fair were also enlightened about scholarships and entrepreneurship. Stalls were also set up by Punjab University Alumni Office, Placement and Alumni Office FCIT, Career Counseling & Placement Centre, Skill Development Centre and Business Incubation Centre.

PPSC Chairman Zafar Iqbal addresses his farewell meeting

LAHORE, Feb 15 (APP):The Punjab Public Service Commission held a farewell meeting for Lt-Gen (retd) Malik Zafar Iqbal on conclusion of his three-year term as the PPSC chairman, here on Thursday.
Addressing the PPSC staff, Zafar Iqbal expressed gratitude to the entire team and highlighted the comprehensive transformation, taking place within the organisation, during his tenure. The PPSC underwent significant reforms aimed at restoring the public trust in the recruitment process and developing it on modern lines. Central to the reforms was the revamping and streamlining of the examination process and establishment of a new data bank, along with development of software for streamlining examination processes. Additionally, the introduction of an e-pay system for exam fees and establishment of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) point to verify candidates’ identities further enhanced transparency and security.
To combat impersonation and prevent paper leakage, jammers were installed at all PPSC examination centres, and an intelligence and vigilance wing had also been established to monitor the entire examination process. Moreover, an adviser cell was created to ensure transparency in the nomination of advisers, a first in the PPSC’s history.  The outgoing chairman also emphasised the importance of professional development, highlighting the initiation of HR trainings through MPDD for PPSC staff. Looking ahead, he outlined plans for digitalizing PPSC’s business processes and implementing computer-based testing systems by 2025, alongside the expansion of PPSC offices from seven to thirteen to better serve candidates.
In 2023 alone, the PPSC successfully recruited 9,462 candidates (fourth highest till now). Expressing optimism for the future, he expressed confidence that the ongoing projects would be carried forward and completed under the new leadership. The commission members acknowledged that his legacy would be marked for ushering in a new era of transparency, efficiency, and professionalism within the organisation.
