UoM, Sadiq College Women University Bahawalpur sign MoU

DIR LOWER, Feb 21 (APP)::A momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the University of Malakand and the Government Sadiq College Women University Bahawalpur, Pakistan here on Wednesday.
The primary objective of this MoU is to foster collaborative efforts aimed at establishing and enhancing academic exchanges and cooperation in teaching, training, research, as well as collaboration in R&D activities, all rooted in principles of equality and reciprocity. This partnership seeks to promote relations and mutual understanding between both the parties.
The MoU was signed by Professor Dr. Rashid Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, University of Malakand, and Professor Dr. Ashfaq Mahmood Qureshi, Vice Chancellor, Government Sadiq College Women University Bahawalpur.
The signing ceremony was attended by team members of the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC), including Dr. Muhammad Usman, Director ORIC, Maqsood Mazhar, Manager Research Operations, Sajid Khan, Communication & Publication Specialist as well as faculty members from the Department of Chemistry and relevant officials.
This collective participation underscores the significance and breadth of the collaboration, signaling a promising step forward in academic cooperation and advancement.

Opening ceremony of 19th Cholistan Rally held

BAHAWALPUR, Feb 21 (APP):Commissioner Bahawalpur Division Dr. Ehtesham Anwar on Wednesday said that the Cholistan Desert Rally is a premier motorsports festival that promotes a positive image of the country here and abroad.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 19th TDCP International Cholistan Desert Rally and Cultural Festival in Bahawal Gymkhana Bahawalpur, the commissioner said that the Cholistan Desert Rally and its associated cultural events showcase Pakistani culture and traditions worldwide.
The commissioner highlighted that the rally spanning over 500 kilometers, is being provided fool-proof security by the police and military forces of Pakistan. He further mentioned that the event has become the largest rally in South East Asia due to its captivating beauty, and rich cultural and tourism events.
He said that the rally attracts many tourists from Pakistan and around the world to Bahawalpur every year. The commissioner also revealed that the rally will feature races in 7 categories. He announced that the prize money for international racers would be set to be in dollars in the upcoming years.
Addressing the ceremony, Managing Director of Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) Humaira Akram emphasized the significant role the Cholistan Desert Rally and its important role in the social and economic development of the region. She mentioned that this year, drivers from Saudi Arabia, the UK, Afghanistan, Iran, and the USA are also participating in the rally.
She further revealed that the women’s category has been made more active.
The ceremony unveiled the Winner Trophy and screened a documentary film showcasing the rally’s anthem. The event also highlighted the history and culture of the Cholistan Desert, the historical palaces of Bahawalpur, historical buildings, historical backgrounds, tourism, and culture through beautiful cultural dances in addition to  light and sound shows.
Earlier, shields were distributed to the organizers and racers of the rally by the Commissioner of Bahawalpur Division. A magnificent fireworks display was also part of the event.
Deputy Commissioner Bahawalpur Zaheer Anwar Jappa, Project Director DHA Bahawalpur Brigadier Naveed Iqbal, District Police Officer Bahawalpur Syed Muhammad Abbas, officials, participants and racers attended the ceremony.

Sudanese envoy, LCCI chief want more trade between his country, Pakistan

LAHORE, Feb 21 (APP):Ambassador of Sudan Salih Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Siddig has said that Sudan and Pakistan have very good relations but the economic ties are below the ambitions. Sudan is very rich in natural resources, agriculture, mining and livestock, and is keen to make mutual trade and economic ties stronger.
He expressed these views in a meeting with President of Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kashif Anwar, here at LCCI Wednesday. Senior Vice President Zafar Mahmood Chaudhry and Executive Committee Members were also present.
The ambassador said that Pakistan and Sudan have very good relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties. Besides good diplomatic relations, both countries have very good cultural ties and many Sudanese students are studying here in Pakistan, he added.
“The goal of this visit is to boost economic relations and the first thing Sudan needs is ensuring food security. In this regard cooperation with countries like Pakistan is very important,” he mentioned.
Salih Mohamed said, “Promotion of relations between the private sectors of Sudan and Pakistan is our goal. Lahore Chamber is very old and experienced chamber and is a big contributor in Pakistan’s economy. I hope that LCCI will play a good role in Sudanese economy as well.”LCCI President Kashif Anwar said that Pakistan and Sudan share a long history of friendship and cooperation, and both are members of the OIC and have been enjoying sound diplomatic ties. “LCCI is well aware of the economic importance of Sudan. As one of Africa’s largest countries, Sudan occupies a strategic geographical location, serving as a bridge between North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, making it a key player in regional trade and commerce. Sudan has a diverse economy supported by its vast reserves of natural resources including oil, gold, minerals, and arable land, which serve as the backbone of its economic development. There is certainly a potential to take the bilateral trade volume to at least USD one billion.”He said that Pakistan is exporting pharmaceutical products, packing sacks to Sudan but there are many other product lines which can find their place in Sudanese markets. He said that the agriculture plays a vital role in Sudan’s economy, with fertile lands along the Nile River supporting the cultivation of crops such as wheat, cotton, and sesame. Pakistan can certainly play an important role in Agri-mechanization of Sudan by enhancing the exports of tractors, related parts and other agricultural machinery. On the other hand, Sudan can be a very important supplying market for agricultural raw materials for Pakistan.
Kashif Anwar added that Pakistan can also support the infrastructure development in Sudan by exporting construction materials. There is also tremendous potential of Joint Ventures in Tourism Sector. Pakistan is known for its value-added textiles, leather products, sports goods, carpets and surgical instruments etc., which can be exported to Sudan if Pakistani exports are given better market access. For reduction in trade barriers, the Embassy of Sudan can play a very important role in this connection by facilitating a Preferential Trade Agreement between the two countries.Pakistan has a thriving IT industry and Sudan is making effort for developing its technology sector. Sudan certainly benefits from the expertise of Pakistan in IT and Education sectors.
“Strengthening banking channels can facilitate trade and investment between Pakistan and Sudan. Encouraging financial institutions from both countries to establish branches or correspondent relationships can prove to be very important in this connection”, he said, adding that regular high-level meet-ups, business delegations, and organizing single country exhibitions on reciprocal basis can certainly help in unlocking new opportunities to enhance the trade volume.Kashif Anwar said it is necessary to make a special mention about the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) established by the Government of Pakistan to primarily focus on expediting new investments in five areas including Defence, Agriculture, Minerals, Information Technology, Telecommunication and Energy.The LCCI President hoped that the Ambassador of Sudan will apprise the investors in Sudan about SIFC and encourage them to invest in Pakistan in these sectors through Joint Ventures. In addition to that the Government of Punjab is making all out efforts to improve doing business in the province by facilitating international and national investors through one window operation.

Political parties urged to forge national accord to steer country out of crises

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21 (APP): Religious scholars and leaders on Wednesday urged political parties to forge a national accord requiring collective efforts to steer the country out of crises.

In the joint declaration adopted at the “Convention for Pakistan Accord’, the scholars and leaders from all religious schools of thoughts emphasized the necessity for all stakeholders, including state institutions, and political and religious parties to jointly formulate a covenant for the betterment of the nation.

The covenant, named the Pakistan Accord, should outline the trajectory for the country’s next 25 years addressing both internal and external challenges and finding effective solutions for economic crisis and combating extremism, terrorism, and youth radicalization, they added.

The convention organized by the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) was chaired by its Chairman Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi.

They said it should outline a unified plan for steering beloved country for the next 25 years,
The Ulema and scholars urged the political parties to accept one another’s mandate and resolve their electoral disputes as per the Constitution and law.

They emphasized that economic stability was intricately linked with political stability. “As Pakistan faces several challenges, which can be addressed through cooperation from all democratic forces,” they added.

The religious scholars and leaders stressed the importance of fostering an environment of tolerance and mutual respect among all political leaders, aiming to eliminate past animosities.

They proposed that Pakistan’s foreign policy, along with improving relations with friendly countries, should also focus on alleviating poverty and unemployment through a plan for youth rehabilitation, aiming to eliminate extremism and terrorism.

They concluded by asserting that all stakeholders must come together to formulate a consensus national policy, which should be implemented by the government in a coherent manner.

The Ulema and scholars lauded the services of Pakistan Army and security agencies in maintaining peace and security during the general elections.

10 smoke-emitting vehicles fined

FAISALABAD, Feb 21 (APP):The Environment Protection Agency, during a crackdown, took action against 10 smoke-emitting vehicles and collected Rs 20,000 fine from drivers, here on Wednesday.
Deputy Director Johar Abbas said that the teams also inspected brick-kilns and closed down operation of one kiln in Chak No 266-RB, Khurrianwala in addition to imposing Rs 100,000 fine on the owner.
They also re-sealed a boiler of a plant on Narrwala road bypass which was de-sealed by the owner itself illegally and a case was registered against him.
The legal action was taken in violation of Punjab Environmental Protection Smog Prevention and Control rules 2023.

UoS seminar highlights Tax Ombudsman’s role in protecting taxpayers’ rights

SARGODHA, Feb 21 (APP):Department of Economics, University of Sargodha (UoS), hosted a one-day seminar on ‘Role of Tax Ombudsman in protecting taxpayers rights initiative of Federal Tax Ombudsman’, here on Wednesday.
The seminar was aimed to ensure disposal of complaints of tax maladministration promptly, justly, fairly, and to rectify any injustice done to taxpayers by the action of tax employees. Seminar raised awareness and understanding of taxpayer’s rights and avenues for redress.
Seminar was attended by Dr. Fayyaz Ahmed Ranjha member advisory committee of FTO, Pro-Vice Chancellor UoS Prof. Dr. Ghulam Yasin, Chairman Department of Economics Prof. Dr. Masood Sarwar Awan and a large number of students.
Dr. Fayyaz Ahmed Ranjha said that the Tax Ombudsman serves as a beacon of hope for taxpayers offering a channel for grievances and concerns to be addressed partially. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure a better environment where the taxpayer can assert their right without fear or favor. He explained the goal of FTO as the regulator who helps the people to resolve their tax-related problems, in a better way.
Prof. Dr. Ghulam Yassin said that tax is the backbone of any nation’s economy. He appreciated the efforts made by the FTO to ensure fairness and accountability in taxation.
FTO plays a vital role in promoting transparency and trust in the tax system, he concluded.

60 officers assume charge at PSCA

LAHORE, Feb 21 (APP):Newly recruited 60 officers of the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, after completing training, have assumed charge, here on Wednesday.
According to spokesman for the authority, an introductory session was held with the managing director, chief operating officer, and other officers with the newly recruited police communication officers.
The new police communication officers were appointed to the Operation and Monitoring Center and Emergency 15 Call Centre. Maintaining merit and transparency, candidates were selected after tests and interviews.

AIOU to send degrees automatically to students

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21 (APP):Vice Chancellor, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood has said that the university would send  degrees automatically to the students from the autumn semester 2024.
While addressing the meeting of Faculty of Social Sciences, he said that there would be no need to apply for degree separately.
He said that there was special focus on improving the examinations and admissions system.
The VC directed the controller of examinations to clear the pending cases of degrees and issue the degrees as soon as possible.
Dr. Nasir further said that facilities for the students would be improved to boost their confidence, adding, that the dropout rate would be minimized.
Dr. Nasir added that faculty members were playing an important role due to which our institution was among the best institutions of the country.
He said that we were all engaged in our respective jurisdictions for the betterment of the students and the institution.
Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Abdul Aziz Sahir gave a detailed briefing about the faculty of social sciences department.
He gave various suggestions to increase the number of admissions.
He further said that we needed to create more clusters and introduce certificate courses.

British Council announces International Collaboration Grants for artistic & cultural projects in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21 (APP): The British Council on Wednesday announced the opening of applications for its International Collaboration Grants, – a £1 million grant programme – designed to foster innovative artistic and cultural collaborations between the UK and Pakistan.

Artists from Pakistan can apply for grants of up to £75,000, for projects that enable genuine international collaboration between the UK and partner countries, said a news release.

Projects can address any theme, and each project, supported by the International Collaboration Grants is required to include at least one UK-based organisation and one organisation based in Pakistan.

The International Collaboration Grants support new international partnerships, offering substantial support to the organisations and artists in the development of creative projects.

“Culture is central to the UK-Pakistan relationship. That’s why are proud to be supporting new creative partnerships between artists from both countries through our International Collaboration Grant Programme”, said Country Director British Council Pakistan, James Hampson.

“We want to help artists from the UK and Pakistan to showcase their talents on the international stage by working together, transcending borders and enriching the world with new work.”
