FCCI thanks PM for redressing FBR-related issue

FAISALABAD, Aug 11 (APP):Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) President Rehan Naseem Bharara has paid tribute to collective efforts of the business community to reverse the harsh impact of 37-A, authorizing FBR to unilaterally start inquiries and arrest businessmen.
In a statement here on Monday, he said that the unlimited powers of FBR have been trimmed and notification to this effect has also been issued.
He appreciated the efforts of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif who directly intervened and constituted a committee of chambers and representatives of FBR to dispel the genuine apprehensions of the business community.
He said that no arrest or inquiry could be initiated without the prior consent of this committee.
Rehan Naseem Bharara also lauded the efforts of former caretaker minister Dr. Gohar Ejaz and Patron Inchief of the UBG SM Tanveer who steered the peaceful movement of the business community and made it positive and result oriented.
He said that the apprehensions of business communities have been removed and now the business community is ready to collaborate with the government and play its key role in the sustained and comprehensive development of Pakistan.

SSDO, Climate Optics hold azadi cleaning drive at Trail 5

ISLAMABAD, Aug 11 (APP):The Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) in collaboration with Climate Optics organized the Azadi Cleaning Drive at Trail 5 Islamabad, as part of Independence Day celebrations with the aim of promoting environmental stewardship and a litter-free Pakistan.
Volunteers, environmental activists and members of civil society participated in the drive, collecting waste and raising awareness about the importance of preserving the natural beauty of public spaces. The initiative sought to encourage citizens to take responsibility for their surroundings and to adopt sustainable practices in daily life, said a press release on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion SSDO Executive Director Syed Kausar Abbas said that independence is incomplete without the commitment to protect the country’s environment.
He remarked that our freedom comes with the responsibility to safeguard our land, our water and our air. Through activities like the Azadi Cleaning Drive, we hope to inspire people to take small but impactful actions toward a cleaner and greener Pakistan.
He further added that SSDO and Climate Optics will continue to organize awareness campaigns and community-led initiatives to address climate change, waste management and environmental protection.
Participants of the drive expressed enthusiasm for similar future activities, noting that preserving Pakistan’s natural beauty requires collective and consistent efforts.
The event concluded with volunteers pledging to avoid littering and to spread the message of environmental responsibility.

Gallery 6 invites artists for APA 2025 competition

ISLAMABAD, Aug 11 (APP):Gallery 6 Islamabad, invited young artists from across Pakistan to participate in the 6th edition of the Arjumand Painting Award (APA), a national biennial competition that recognizes and supports young painters.
Established in 2015, APA is the first art award of its kind instituted by a private gallery in Pakistan, offering substantial cash prizes and national visibility.
The award aims to celebrate originality and excellence in painting among young Pakistani artists. Four cash prizes have been announced: Rs. 400,000 for First Prize, Rs. 300,000 for Second Prize, Rs. 200,000 for Third Prize, and a Merit Award of Rs. 50,000. In addition to the prize money, selected participants may also be offered art residencies, exhibitions and promotional opportunities both in Pakistan and abroad, said a press release on Monday.
Further, all artists aged 20 to 45 years, residing in Pakistan, are eligible to apply with submission of one painting completed in 2024 or 2025.  The deadline for submission of painting images via email is 26 September 2025. Details and submission forms are available on the Gallery 6 Facebook and Instagram pages.
Artist and educator R.M. Naeem noted, “Gallery 6 is a major player in the art landscape of Pakistan. The institution of APA is a commendable step toward recognizing and nurturing Pakistani art, judged by a highly reputable jury.”
Art critic Aasim Akhtar described the award as “a promising event that not only guides young artists but gives them respect and encouragement to continue their practice.”
Durriya Kazi, artist and former professor at the University of Karachi, emphasized the award’s importance in providing support to artists navigating a rapidly globalizing world.
This year, to further enhance the scope of the Arjumand Painting Award, it is being supported by three collaborating partners: Mrs. Nighat Ali, an art patron from Lahore; the Ercelawn Art Fund, established in memory of the late economist and activist Aly Alp Ercelawn; and Millat Tractors Limited.
The organizers encourage widespread participation, both from artists based in cities and regions outside the established art hubs of Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. The award continues to provide a unique opportunity for self-taught and formally trained artists alike to gain national recognition.
The Arjumand Painting Award has steadily grown in stature since its inception. Previous editions have attracted wide participation from across the country and have played a significant role in launching the careers of many young artists. The award is widely regarded as a credible and transparent platform for identifying and promoting emerging talent.

Global talent in Quran recitation shines at day two of King Abdulaziz Int’l Competition in Makkah

MAKKAH, August 11 (APP): The judging panel of the 45th King Abdulaziz International Competition for Memorizing, Reciting, and Interpreting the Holy Quran, organized by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, continued its final-round proceedings at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

On the second day, the panel listened to the recitations of 17 contestants – eight in the morning session and nine in the evening – representing the competition’s five categories. Participants hailed from Mali, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Maldives, Albania, Australia, Egypt, Libya, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Kuwait, Hungary, Yemen, Malaysia, and the Russian Federation.

The previous day saw 14 contestants present their recitations across two sessions, bringing the total number of participants heard so far to 31.

The competition, a global platform showcasing the mastery of Quran memorization and recitation, continues to draw exceptional talent from across continents, uniting voices in a shared devotion to the Holy Quran.

WASA marks Minorities Day by honoring Christian employees’ role, rights

FAISALABAD, Aug 11 (APP):Water & Sanitation Agency (WASA) has marked Minorities Day by honoring Christian employees’ role and rights during a special cake-cutting ceremony held at WASA Head Office here on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Managing Director WASA Shoaib Rasheed said that Christian employees are backbone of WASA and the administration is fully committed to meeting all their basic needs in addition to ensuring protection of their rights as a top priority.
CBA President Mian Maqsood said that Minorities Day symbolizes the freedom of rights for Christian community while WASA management and Christian employees celebrate it together as a true example of harmony.
General Secretary Binyamin Sahutra highlighted the pivotal role of Christian community in Pakistan’s creation and development.
Deputy General Secretary Amir Rehmat said that the joint cake-cutting under one roof demonstrated unity, harmony, and fraternity within WASA Faisalabad.
Director I&C Arif Suryani, Director Admin Javed Ghani, Director Finance Sheharyar Hassan, Director Revenue Umar Iftikhar, Chairman Khalid Khan, Zulfiqar Kahloon and others were also present on the occasion.

SAPM Haroon chairs meeting of regulatory reforms

ISLAMABAD, Aug 11 (APP):Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan on Monday chaired a meeting of the sub-committee on regulatory reforms.
The meeting was attended by Scott Jacobs, representatives from the Board of Investment (BOI), the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), said a news release.
Haroon emphasized that the agreed recommendations should be drafted at the earliest. He remarked that excessive regulations, procedural delays, and barriers to ease of doing business have become serious challenges for enterprises in Pakistan.
He further noted that several provisions in the current Act create hurdles and restrictions that obstruct innovation in modern corporate structures.
During the meeting, proposals for amendments to the Companies Act 2017 were presented. The SECP and BOI jointly introduced a comprehensive package of recommendations aimed at aligning the Act with international best practices.
The proposed amendments include removing the minimum and maximum limit on the number of members in private and public companies, as well as introducing greater flexibility in corporate forms and eliminating unnecessary restrictions.

NHA to spend Rs75b from own funds on road repairs: NA told

ISLAMABAD, Aug 11 (APP):Parliamentary Secretary for Communications Gul Asghar Khan informed the National Assembly on Monday that the National Highway Authority (NHA) will spend Rs75 billion from its own resources on road maintenance during the current fiscal year.
Replying to a question from MNA Sharmila Faruqui during Question Hour, he stated that the funds would be sourced from toll collections and fines, which have exceeded Rs 100 billion this year.
He added that the NHA had also received Rs9.5 billion from the government under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2024–25, with a total allocation of Rs226.9 billion for the authority.
Acknowledging complaints about the poor condition of some highways, including the N-25 Karachi–Quetta–Chaman route, he said the NHA was ready to address safety concerns, such as pedestrian access on the Karachi–Hyderabad Motorway.
Local representatives, he added, could share details of problem areas for immediate action.

LHC issues notices on Ejaz Chaudhry’s appeal against May 9 conviction

LAHORE, Aug 11 (APP):The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday issued notices to prosecution on an appeal filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Senator Ejaz Chaudhry against his conviction in a May 9-related case.
The bench headed by LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelum heard the appeal filed by the PTI leader challenging the trial court verdict.
The petitioner’s counsel – Mian Ali Ashfaq and Rana Maroof Advocate, argued before the bench that the trial court had convicted their client in the Sherpao Bridge rioting case contrary to the facts and urged the court to set aside the 10-year sentence and order his release.

President Zardari vows to work for welfare, protection of minorities’ rights

ISLAMABAD, Aug 11 (APP):President Asif Ali Zardari Monday said that Pakistan’s minority communities are an essential and respected part of society, and  their rights, freedoms, and safety are fully protected under the Constitution of Pakistan.
Speaking on the occasion of celebration of National Minorities Day at an event at Aiwan-e-Sadr, he praised their valuable contributions to the country’s strength and progress, noting their important role in national development.
He made it clear that the State stands determined against all forms of discrimination, extremism, and violence, adding that such acts have no place in society and will not be allowed to threaten national unity and integrity.
The President said the State has taken practical measures to promote inclusion and ensure equal opportunities for all. These include separate seats for non-Muslims in the Parliament and Provincial Assemblies, a 5% quota in federal and provincial government jobs, and scholarships for minority students from the primary level to higher and professional education.
The leaders of various minority communities thanked President Asif Ali Zardari for his historic decision in 2009, during his first tenure as President of Pakistan, to declare 11th August as National Minorities Day, to be observed each year. They acknowledged this initiative as a milestone in recognising their contributions and upholding their rights.
He further assured the minority communities that their worship places, if presently under illegal occupation, would be retrieved without delay. He said he would ask the government to take steps to ensure such places are immediately restored to their rightful custodians.
He noted that the National Policy for Interfaith Harmony has been designed to promote religious tolerance, strengthen social integration, and unite all religious communities as part of a cohesive national fabric.
The President said, “Our religion Islam upholds peace, justice, and human dignity — principles reflected in the Charter of Madina, which granted equal rights to all communities, including non-Muslims.”
He added that Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah envisioned a Pakistan where every citizen, regardless of religion, would enjoy equal rights — a vision that continues to guide state policies.
Marking the significance of the day, President Zardari called for a collective resolve to build an inclusive and stronger Pakistan where every citizen enjoys equality, mutual respect, and legal protection, and is empowered to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s shared destiny.
Minister for Law and Human Rights Azam Nazir Tarar said that the Prime Minister had formed a task force to resolve issues of minorities and bring electoral reforms through legislative and executive measures.
He said the government will seriously look into the demand of handing over properties belonging to minority community which were taken over by the government in the past.
The government will fulfill its constitutional responsibility to protect rights of minorities and ensure their quota in educational institutions and jobs, he added.
Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad Yousaf said the government had undertaken measures to discourage violence and extremism against minorities.
He said his ministry was celebrating the religious festivals of minorities every year and spending millions of rupees for renovation of their places of worship and on scholarships for minority students.
Dr Seema Farzad representative of Bahai community called for solidarity among all the religious communities in the country. She said peaceful existence among religious communities was crucial for development of the country.
Isphanyar M. Bhandra, a member of National Assembly and representative of Parsi community urged that properties of minorities that were administered by the government should be returned to the original owners and funds should be released for spending on their betterment.
Referring to the speech of Quaid-e-Azam in the Constituent Assembly on August 11, 1947, representative of Christian community Dr Joseph Arshad said the minorities contributed wholeheartedly to the development and progress of Pakistan especially in the education and healthcare fields.
Minister of State for Religious Affairs Kheal Das Kohistani paid tribute to the Pakistan’s armed forces for befittingly responding to the Indian aggression in May this year.
He said the minorities will continue to make their contributions for the progress of society.
Punjab Minister for Minority Affairs Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora enumerated the steps taken by the provincial government to promote interfaith harmony in the country.
He said the government of Pakistan Muslim League(N) was committed to protect legal and social rights of minorities. Federal and provincial ministers, ambassadors and people from different walks of life attended the event.

IESCO requires NOCs from RDA, CDA for electricity connections: NA told

ISLAMABAD, Aug 11 (APP):Federal Minister for Power, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, informed the National Assembly on Monday that the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) requires No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the respective development authorities before providing electricity connections in their jurisdictions.
Responding to a question from MNA Sher Afzal Marwat during Question Hour, the minister clarified that areas under the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) must obtain an NOC from RDA, while areas within the Islamabad Capital Territory fall under the jurisdiction of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), which issues the required NOCs.
Addressing supplementary questions, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari acknowledged that complaints related to prolonged load-shedding and overbilling in some constituencies fall outside the scope of the original question.
However, he assured members that such issues could be referred to the relevant offices for appropriate resolution.
He also suggested that concerned standing committees could be engaged for further follow-up discussions.
