ISLAMABAD, Mar 27 (APP): On the blessed occasion of Ramadan-ul-Mubarik, the three-day long exhibition of the rare and ancient manuscripts of the Holy Quran was inaugurated here at Safa Gold Mall on Wednesday.

Chairman Council of Islamic Ideology (CCI) Dr Qibla Ayaz formally inaugurated the exhibition, organized by Iranian Embassy and Iran Pakistan Persian Research Center.

The Chairman CCI appreciated the cultural initiative and described the enthusiastic participation of people in the exhibition of Quranic manuscripts as a manifestation of the long-standing friendship between the people of Iran and Pakistan. He said Holy Qur’an is an essential axis for the unity and closeness of the hearts of the Islamic Ummah.

In the exhibition, along with Quranic manuscripts, calligraphy panels and works of art have were presented and placed before the public. These Qur’ans are written in beautiful Nastaliq, Thulth Naskh calligraphy, and some of them are decorated with gold water and other colors and patterns of flowers and shrubs.

The exhibition includes dozens of original manuscripts of the Quran, some of which are accompanied by Persian translations. The organizer said the existence of 800-year-old copies of the Holy Qur’an is an emphasis on the historical status of the legacy of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad Sallahu Alaihe wa Alihe Wasallam Khatam-un-Nabiyyeen. A large number of calligraphers, activists and art lovers participated in the event.

Over 13,000 children killed in Gaza, others malnourished: UNICEF

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 27 (APP): Israel has killed more than 13,000 children in Gaza since October 7 while others are suffering from severe malnutrition and do not “even have the energy to cry”, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
“Thousands more have been injured or we can’t even determine where they are. They may be stuck under rubble … We haven’t seen that rate of death among children in almost any other conflict in the world,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell told the CBS News, a leading American TV network.

“I have been in wards of children who are suffering from severe anaemia malnutrition, the whole ward is absolutely quiet. Because the children, the babies … don’t even have the energy to cry.” Russell said there were “very great bureaucratic challenges” moving trucks into Gaza for aid and assistance as famine stalks more than two million Palestinians since Israel’s “genocidal” war began.

Intense Israeli attacks in Gaza continued Tuesday, with a “double-digit number of children killed overnight” and ongoing aid delivery obstacles that are responsible for near-famine conditions, UN humanitarians said.

The continuing violence came despite an immediate ceasefire call for the remainder of Ramadan from the Security Council on Monday, prompting urgent appeals from UN aid agencies for the resolution to be respected immediately, to prevent more people dying.
Speaking from Rafah in southern Gaza, UN Children’s Fund spokesperson James Elder said that 13,750 children have now been killed since OCT. 7.

Citing reports of “a double-digit number of children killed overnight”, Elder noted that this had happened “only hours after the (Security Council) resolution was passed”.
The southern Gazan city of Khan Younis “barely exists anymore”, the UNICEF spokesperson added, before describing the “utter annihilation” of constant Israeli bombardment which has left an unreported number of children and families buried under the rubble of their homes.

“In my 20 years with the UN I have never seen such devastation, it’s just chaos, ruin, debris and rubble every single direction, everywhere I look,” he said, reporting on his latest aid mission to the north.Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis – “such a critical place for children with the wounds of war” – is now no longer even operational, the UNICEF official reported, adding that only one-third of Gaza’s hospitals are “partially functional” now.

Further north, where a UN World Food Programme (WFP) aid mission secured the passage of 38 trucks carrying relief supplies on Monday – for the first time in five days – Elder described seeing people making “that universal signal of hand to mouth, desperately asking and seeking for food”.

This is despite the fact that hundreds of trucks containing lifesaving humanitarian aid remain over the border in Egypt, UN agencies have pointed out. Citing respected food insecurity analysis published recently warning of Gaza’s “catastrophic decline into imminent famine”, the UNICEF official also noted that the agency’s own data indicated that one in three children under two years old now suffer from acute malnutrition. Before the conflict, fewer than one in 100 children under five were malnourished, Mr. Elder said.

“This speaks to utter deprivation, this speaks to the devastation of things children rely on – water and health systems – but it also speaks to what the numbers speak to, which is a lethal lack of food and nutrition aid still not getting to the north.”

Before the war, around 500 commercial and humanitarian trucks reached the enclave every day, but the average today is around one-third of that number but there have also been periods of “weeks where nothing got into the north”, the UNICEF official added.
Echoing deep concerns about the desperate scenes unfolding in Gaza, UN World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson Tarik Jazarevic reported that most patients at Al Amal hospital in the south have now left the facility.

Media reports indicated that an evacuation order for the facility was issued by the Israeli military, amid intense hostilities in the west of Khan Younis. The situation is also believed to be dire in northern Gaza’s Al Shifa Hospital which was also the target of an Israeli military raid, but WHO does not have access there, Jasarevic said.

“You have health workers dying, you have hospitals that are under siege, you have people who are looking for shelter in these places and if you can’t get a shelter at a hospital where else can you go?” he told journalists in Geneva.

Media reports indicated airstrikes overnight into Tuesday near the southernmost city of Rafah where some 1.5 million people now shelter, many after being uprooted from their homes elsewhere in the enclave. The UN aid coordination office, OCHA, also urged Israel to lift its ban on aid deliveries to the north by UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, echoing earlier calls by the UN Secretary-General.

“We need to dispel this notion that their obligation of getting aid in somehow stops with getting a few trucks – a fraction of what is needed – across the border and then once it’s in there as I have seen reported, then it’s not our problem any more, it’s the UN humanitarian agencies’ problem. That is not correct.”

He added: “You cannot claim to adhere to these international provisions of law when you block UNRWA food convoys, when you just last week denied five missions to the north, when we have now reports of Israeli attacks on warehouses and the police that are supposed to help secure this aid inside Gaza.”

According to WAPDA spokesman here on Wednesday, the chairman reached there in the wake of a terrorist attack near Besham in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, killing five Chinese and a local on their way to Dasu Hydropower Project site from Islamabad the other day. China’s Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong, together with Chairman Ghani, spent time with Chinese workforce at the project site.
At the construction camp of China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) – Contractor of Dasu Hydropower Project – the chairman condemned the tragic incident, and offered condolences on behalf of WAPDA over the loss of lives. “Our sympathies are with the bereaved families in this time of trial. The law-enforcement agencies are vehemently investigating the terrorist incident, and we hope the culprits found involved in it, will soon be brought to justice. WAPDA is in close coordination with the quarters concerned to further beef up the security arrangements in order to avoid such untoward incident in future,” he said.
The WAPDA chairman lauded the Chinese firms for their contribution to implementing the projects – that of water and hydropower in particular – crucial for development of Pakistan. PHC directs KP Assembly speakers to administer oath to members on reserved seats
PESHAWAR, Mar 27 (APP):The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday directed Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to administer oath to the members on reserved seats and allow them to sign the roll of members in terms of articles, 65, 255 of the constitution.
In short decision, written by Justice S.M Attique Shah, the speaker was also directed to allow and facilitate the members in casting their votes in the upcoming senate election scheduled for April 02, 2024.
Earlier, the PHC reserved its decision on the petitions of oath taking of the members elected on reserved seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
A two-member bench comprising Justice S.M. Attique Shah and Justice Shakeel Ahmed heard the petitions of the elected members of People’s Party, PML-N and JUIF on reserved seats.
During the hearing, Justice S.M. Attique Shah inquired whether the Speaker is refusing to administer oath, to which the Speaker’s lawyer Ali Azim Afridi replied that it was not the case, adding that for the first time the Governor’s order comes on the request of the opposition leader rather through proper procedures.
Justice Attique Shah asked if anyone has challenged the Governor’s order. To which Ali Azim Afridi Advocate replied that no one has challenged the governor’s order but on March 21, the secretary of the provincial assembly wrote a letter.
The lawyer of the opposition while giving arguments said that the High Court had already given a judgment regarding allotment of reserved seats, adding that in this context delaying the oath taking was also a violation of this decision of the larger bench.
He said that if the Speaker was reluctant to administer oath to the members, then the Governor could take the oath.
Justice Attique Shah inquired whether it is not necessary to take the oath of the members in the House? To which the opposition lawyer replied that the oath taking could be done during the session to be convened for the Senate elections. He insisted that the governor has the power to convene the assembly session.
During the hearing, Advocate General Shah Faisal Atmankhil told the court that Article 65 says that when a member is elected, he will take oath and it is in the third schedule that the assembly will be in session. It has been defined by the Peshawar High Court in the case of Baldukumar and Speaker Asad Qaiser.
Justice Shakeel Ahmed remarked that the members who have been notified have the right to be sworn in.
The Advocate General replied that when the Chief Minister is not present or there is no confidence against him, then the Governor can convene the meeting under Article 109.
Justice Attique Shah asked that Advocate General, how he was relying on the decision which the Supreme Court had called a bad law? To which the Advocate General said that this would not happen in future and he withdrew the case reference.
