President for further strengthening economic, cultural ties with Jordan

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP): President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday said that Pakistan wanted to further deepen its ties with Jordan in the areas of trade, economy, culture and defense.

The president, talking to the outgoing Ambassador of Jordan to Pakistan Ambassador Ibrahim Yala Al Madani, who called on him, said that Pakistan enjoyed excellent fraternal relations with Jordan based on common culture and history.

He emphasized the need for enhancing cooperation with Jordan in the economic and commercial fields for the mutual benefits of two brotherly countries.

He called for political, cultural and educational exchanges to bring the two brotherly countries further closer.

President Alvi appreciated Jordan’s peace efforts and support to the Palestine issue through political and diplomatic means.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support to the people of Palestine for their inalienable right to self-determination.

Expressing deep concern over the rising incidents of Islamophobia, the president emphasized the need for taking effective measures by the international community to prevent such incidences.

He stated that there was a growing need to promote interfaith harmony, tolerance and mutual respect for each other’s religion.

The president appreciated the efforts made by the outgoing ambassador for improving bilateral cooperation between the two countries during his stay in Pakistan.

HEC, Hult Prize Foundation to promote social entrepreneurship among youth

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP): The Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan and Hult Prize Foundation (HPF) have agreed to jointly take steps for promotion and strengthening of social entrepreneurship culture among the Pakistani youth.

In this connection, Director General Research & Innovation (HEC) Hazrat Bilal and Chief Executive Officer Hult Prize Foundation Ms. Lori Van Dan signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) during a virtual ceremony.

Under the LOI, the partners will provide the youth with an opportunity to get educated about social entrepreneurship, as they will offer them a platform to solve world’s biggest challenges through innovative social enterprise with positive global impact.

Through this collaboration, awareness about sustainable development goals (SDGs) will be raised and students at Pakistani universities will also be provided with personal and leadership development opportunities.

It is pertinent to mention that Hult Prize Foundation annually hosts the world’s largest competition for game-changing business ideas addressing a social problem.

Pakistani students actively participated in the Hult Prize Foundation’s annual competition in the past, while there were some winners as well. This collaboration will open avenues for all Pakistani universities to actively participate and learn from the experience.

In his remarks, Director General Hazrat Bilal said that the collaboration will turn out to be an exciting opportunity for the students at Pakistani universities and will help address social problems faced by the community at large through inclusion of enterprise development and entrepreneurship.

Lori Van Dam, in her remarks, said that HPF has the second largest world-wide community in Pakistan and the country has been an active participant in almost every Hult Prize round every year.

She reiterated that the collaboration will help further the entrepreneurial culture in Pakistan.

HPF’s annual competition has different rounds and, after following rigorous process, the winning team is awarded with a prize money of US$1 million in funding to translate their big idea into reality.

Ambassador of Pakistan to Ethiopia visits SCCI

SIALKOT, Jul 19 (APP):Ambassador of Pakistan to Ethiopia Atif Sharif on Wednesday visited the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI).


During the meeting, VP SCCI Amer Majeed Sheikh emphasized the need to improve the
current trade volume between the two countries.


The meeting was aimed to strengthen bilateral trade relations and explore business opportunities.
The vice president shared the potential of “Made in Sialkot” products in the Ethiopian market
as well as ways to enhance trade and economic cooperation.


Ambassador Sharif endorsed the exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and competitive pricing
of Sialkot’s products, emphasizing their potential in the Ethiopian market.


They agreed on the importance of exploring new avenues for collaboration, such as joint ventures
and investment opportunities, to facilitate the exchange of goods and services between
the two countries.


The both expressed optimism about the potential growth of trade and pledged to work together
in identifying and capitalizing on business opportunities in various sectors, including surgical
instruments, cutlery items, leather products and shoes.

Tragedy strikes Islamabad as 11 killed in building wall collapse amid heavy rain

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP):A devastating incident took place on Wednesday as heavy rainfall in the city resulted in the collapse of a building’s wall on Peshawar Road, claiming the lives of at least 11 people and leaving six others injured.

The victims were primarily laborers, and rescue teams worked tirelessly to recover their bodies from the rubble, employing heavy machinery to aid in the process. The deceased were promptly transported to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for further proceedings.

Fortunately, the injured were quickly attended to, and all six individuals were out of danger, receiving medical care at the same hospital.

Upon receiving the alert about the incident, the police promptly arrived at the scene to coordinate the rescue efforts. A thorough operation was conducted to locate and extract individuals who were trapped in the debris.

The tragic incident was attributed to the collapse of a building’s wall, which fell upon a tent placed by the laborers who were working on the construction of an underpass.

As a precautionary measure, the authorities at PIMS have put all doctors and paramedical staff on high alert to deal with any emergency during rain.

In a separate and equally heartbreaking incident, an 11-year-old girl lost her life in another wall collapse in Mohammadi Town, under the jurisdiction of Khana Police Station in Islamabad.

PM directs for swift reforms in loss-making state-owned enterprises

ISLAMABAD, July 19 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed the relevant authorities to introduce reforms on priority basis in the state-owned enterprises (SOEs) inflicting losses to the national exchequer.

The prime minister, who chaired a meeting to review the reforms in the SOEs, instructed to ensure the transparency in the process of outsourcing the services as well as public private partnership.

He said the government would ensure that the caretaker government carried forward the policies of the national interest to achieve the consistent progress.

The prime minister said the government was taking all out measures to uplift the working of institutions at par with international standards and provide the best facilities to the masses.

In the briefing, Prime Minister Shehbaz was told that the reforms process of the SOEs was going on swiftly.

It was told that government would ensure the inclusion of experts in the boards of the SOEs to establish modern systems and provide better facilities.

The prime minister was briefed on the performance indicators of the institutions as well as the corporations and the ongoing reforms process there.

Federal ministers Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Syed Naveed Qamar, Makhdoom Murtaza Mahmood, Engineer Khurram Dastgir, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Advisor Ahad Cheema and special assistants to PM Jahanzeb Khan and Tariq Bajwa, and senior officers attended the meeting.
