Torrential rain stuck life in Hazara division

ABBOTTABAD, Apr 15 (APP):Three days of continuous torrential rain have paralyzed life in the Hazara division, severing many road connections and triggering landslides that have blocked several roads, including the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in Kohistan. Flash floods have engulfed residential areas in Abbottabad.
According to reports, the persistent heavy downpour in upper Hazara division, including Abbottabad city, Galyat, Kaghan, Naran, Kohistan, Battagram, and Thandyani, has resulted in numerous road blockages due to landslides. Flash floods have also breached defenses, entered homes and caused widespread destruction.
In Havelian, Abbottabad, Qalandar Abad, and Manshra, the KKH has been blocked at multiple points by flash floods, leaving thousands of vehicles stranded in the water.
Heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, has caused significant damage to electricity transmission lines and telecommunication systems across most parts of Hazara division. Several link roads throughout the division have been cut off due to flash floods and landslides.
In Abbottabad city, the overwhelmed sewerage system has led to the inundation of streets and homes with filth carried by flash floods, sweeping away furniture and household items in various parts of the city. Key roads such as KKH, Main Murree Road, Kakul Road, Mandian, Supply Bazaar, and Link Road Abbottabad have turned into virtual cesspools.
Numerous thoroughfares and connecting roads in Galyat, Thandiani, Mansehra, Battagram, and the Kaghan Valley have been destroyed by heavy rain, landslides, and flash floods. In Mansehra, structural collapses and other incidents triggered by windstorms and heavy rain have been reported.
The meteorological department has forecasted more rain and thunderstorms in the next 24 hours for the Hazara division, particularly in the upper parts, which may exacerbate flooding and landslides.

Shipping Activity at Port Qasim

KARACHI, Apr 15 (APP):A ship ‘Nicholas’ with 56,277 tonnes of Coal, berthed at Pakistan International Bulk Terminal on Sunday.
Meanwhile, four more ships, Fast, MSC Nilgun, High Trader and Navigation Vega also arrived at outer-anchorage of Port Qasim during the last 24 hours.
A total of seven ships were engaged at PQA berths during the last 24 hours, out of them an edible oil carrier ‘TTC Vishaka’ left the Port today morning while another ship ‘Lusail’ is expected to sail today.
Cargo volume of 103,652 tonnes, comprising 9,419 tonnes of export cargo carried in 441 Containers was handled at the port during last 24 hours.
There are 8 ships at Outer Anchorage of Port Qasim, out of them three ships, Fast, Gall and MSC Nilgun& two more ships, MSC Vilda-X and XT Brightness are scheduled to load/offload Cement, Palm oil, Container and Chemicals are expected to take berths at MW-2, LCT, QICT and EVTL on Monday, while three more container ships, MSC Spring-III, MSC United-VIII and Sea-span Jakarta are due to arrive at Port Qasim on Tuesday.

CM makes surprise visit to girls’ school Murree

RAWALPINDI, Apr 15 (APP): Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif visited a Government Girls High School Murree here on Monday.

Despite heavy rainfall, the surprise visit by the chief minister created a great contentment for school students and teachers. The Chief Minister visited various classes and intermingled with the students.

She exchanged views with students about their studies. She also inquired about any problems or issues being faced by then in the school. If there is any problem or need, let me know, she asked the students. The Chief Minister expressed compassion to the girls and appreciated their passion for education.

During the interaction with the students, the chief minister directed for provision of best medical treatment to a girl with a disability in one arm. She also appreciated the arrangements of the school for delivering education.

Earlier, upon her arrival at the school the chief minister was warmly welcomed by the principal and staff. The school administration, teachers and students expressed great joy for having CM Punjab with them. Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman also accompanied the chief minister during the visit.

Gold rates up by Rs 800 to Rs 247,300 per tola

ISLAMABAD, Apr 15 (APP): The per tola price of 24 karat gold witnessed an increase of Rs 800 and was sold at Rs 247,300 on Monday as compared to its sale at Rs.246,500 on the previous day.

The price of 10 grams of 24 karat gold increased by Rs686 and was sold at Rs 212,020 against the sale price of Rs211,334 and 10 gram 22 karat gold also increased to Rs194,351 from Rs 193,723, the All Sindh Sarafa Jewellers Association reported.

The price of per tola and ten gram silver remained constant at Rs 2,650 and Rs 2271.94 respectively. The price of gold in the international market increased by $8 to 2,371 from $2,363, the Association reported.

16 drug peddlers held

FAISALABAD, Apr 15 (APP): Police arrested 16 drug peddlers and seized hashish and liquor on Monday. A report said Shakeel Ahmad was held with 1.5-kg hashish from railway crossing, Jaranwala road while Zafar Iqbal was arrested with 1.5 kg hashish and 1.25-kg hashish was recovered from Samoel Talib from Chak No 229-RB.
Police also recovered 20 liter liquor from Ahmad Ali in 283-GB, 15-liter from Sharafat in 229-RB, 30-liter from Ali in 96-RB, 22-liter from Muqaddas, 10-liter from Riaz, 62-liter from Abdul Rehman, 40-liters from Sagar Maseih from Dijkot Road, 7-liter from Waqas, 10-liter from Husnain, 6-liter from Faisal, 15-liter from Atif, 24-liter from Qasim and Ahmad. Police registered separate cases against the accused.

Pakistan’s regional exports increase 20.57% in 8 months

ISLAMABAD, Apr 15 (APP): Pakistan’s exports to the seven regional countries witnessed an increase of 20.57 per cent in the first eight months of the financial year (2023-24) as compared to the corresponding months of last year.

The country’s exports to the regional countries including Afghanistan, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and the Maldives account for a small amount of $2,912.102 million, which is 14.17 per cent of Pakistan’s overall exports of $20,537.900 million during July-February (2023-24), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported.

China tops the list of countries in terms of Pakistan’s exports to its neighbouring, leaving behind other countries such as Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Pakistan carried out its border trade with the farther neighbour Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Maldives.

Pakistan’s exports to China witnessed an increase of 42.02 per cent to $1,895.720 million in eight months of this year from $1,334.804 million last year while exports to Afghanistan witnessed a nominal decline of 7.68 percent from $346.522 million to $319.887 million.

The country’s exports to Bangladesh also decreased by 19.63 percent to $421.939 million this year from $525.017 whereas exports to Sri Lanka rose by 32.31 percent to $266.164 million from $201.165. The exports to India increased to $0.230 million from $0.161 million in the previous year.

Exports to Nepal increased by 5.66 per cent to $2.164 million from 2.048 million while to Maldives increased by 8.11 per cent to $5.548 million from 5.998 million, it added.

On the other hand, the imports from seven regional countries were recorded at $8,289.088 million during the period under review as compared to $7,293.738 million during last year, showing an increase of 13.64 per cent.

The imports from China during July-February 2023-24 were recorded at $8,105.831 million against the $7,065.406 million during July-February 2022-23, showing an increase of 7.66 per cent during the period.

Among other countries, imports from India are worth $138.713 million against the imports of $125.569 million, an increase of 10.46 per cent while imports from Afghanistan decreased by 59.82 percent from $13.540 million to $5.440 million.

Meanwhile, imports from Sri Lanka increased to $38.733 million from $35.345 million whereas Pakistan imports from Bangladesh recorded $ 38.770 million from $53.260 million during last year. The imports from Nepal into the country witnessed a decrease of 68.85 per cent from $0.610 million to $0.190 million, it added.

Eight killed, 12 injured due to rains in KP

PESHAWAR, Apr 15 (APP):Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Monday issued a report on the loss of life and property in the province due to heavy rains during the last three days.
  According to preliminary reports, eight people were killed and 12 people were injured. Four children, three men and a woman are among the dead persons, while the injured include four women, six men and two children.
According to the report, a total of 85 houses were damaged due to the collapse of walls and roofs in different districts, of which 15 houses were completely damaged and 70 houses were partially damaged.
Due to heavy rain, life and financial accidents took place in different districts of Dir Upper, Chitral Lower, Swat, Malakand and Bajaur.
The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa directed the concerned district administration to provide immediate assistance to the affected family and provide the best medical facilities to the injured. Relief materials were provided to the victims of the affected districts by PDMA.
Due to continuous heavy rains, the flow of water in the rivers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is normal. The flow of water at Nowshera in Kabul River is a record 98,500 cusecs moderate flood. Indus river water flow at Kherabad 103,200 cusecs record as usual.
41,804 cusecs record of water flow of Kabul River at Warsak as usual, flow of water at river Swat at Khawaza Khela is 30,183 cusecs normal and 27,701 cusecs record of water flow  River Swat at Chakdara normally.
80,000 cusecs of water flow at Swat riverat Munda high level flood while 42,187 cusecs record water flow Panjkora River at Zolam Bridge low-level flood,
The PDMA is in constant contact with all district administrations, related and Aid agencies. PDMA’s emergency operation centre is fully operational, people should report any untoward incident to 1700.

E&T Deptt removed 55 tinted glasses, 65 fancy number plates in ICT

ISLAMABAD, Apr 15 (APP):The Excise and Taxation (E&T) Department on Monday intensified action against illegal vehicle modifications in the Federal Capital and a total of 180 vehicles underwent inspection, leading to the removal of 55 tinted glasses and 65 fancy number plates.
On the directive of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad, Irfan Nawaz Memon, the Excise Department were ramping up efforts to curb illegal modifications on vehicles and continued crack down on vehicles sporting black tinted glasses and unauthorized fancy number plates, said the ICT Spokesman, Dr Abdullah Tabassum here.
In a recent operation spearheaded by Assistant Commissioners alongside Assistant Excise & Taxation Officers (AETOs) and Traffic Police, thorough checks were conducted at key locations including Lehtarar Road, Taramuri Chowk, F-6, F-7, and nearby areas, he said adding a total of 180 vehicles underwent inspection, leading to the removal of 55 tinted glasses and 65 fancy number plates. Those found in violation were issued warnings, while the registration of vehicles with illegal modifications was suspended.
On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner urged citizens to comply with the law by removing unauthorized modifications from their vehicles. Only number plates approved by the Excise and Taxation Department should be used to avoid facing punitive measures.
It is noteworthy that the joint operation between the Excise and Taxation Department and the Islamabad Transport Authority is an ongoing effort, indicating a sustained commitment to enforcing regulations and maintaining order on
the city’s roads.
The proactive stance taken by authorities underscored the importance of upholding standards for vehicle modifications, Dr Abdullah said.
He urged the citizens to play their part in fostering a culture of responsibility by adhering to legal requirements regarding vehicle modifications.
