Pakistan routs Australia to reach SF of World Kabaddi Cup

LAHORE, Feb 13 (APP)::As expected, Pakistan comparatively outplayed inexperienced Australian kabaddi team by 62-25 in a Pool ‘B’ match and booked a place in the semifinal on the 5th day of Kabaddi World Cup 2020 at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad on Thursday.
According to the information made available here, in Pool ‘A’, India grabbed the top spot by defeating Iran by 50-39 and confirmed their place in the last four stages of Kabaddi World Cup. Iran and Australia are the other two teams who reached the semifinals from Pool A and B, respectively.

Pakistan chose to raid first after winning the toss against Australia. Pakistan raiders skipper Irfan Mana, Lala Obaidullah, Kaleemullah Jatt, Bilal Mohsin Dhillon were in best form and scored valuable points against Australia. On the other hand, Pakistan stoppers Musharraf Janjua, Shani Basra and Zafar Iqbal and their teammates exhibited similar form during the comfortable victory of their team.

Pakistan captain Irfan Mana and Bilal Mohsin Dhillon shared the award of best raider whereas Shani Basra was named as top stopper of Kabaddi World Cup match against Australia.

Adviser to Chief Minister Punjab on Sports Malik Umer Farooq and Director General Sports Punjab Adnan Arshad Aulakh, President Pakistan Kabaddi Federation (PKF) Ch Shafay Hussain distributed prizes among the top performers.

Secretary PKF Rana Sarwar, Deputy Commissioner Faisalabad Muhammad Ali and CPO Muhammad Sohail Ch were also present on this occasion. The fifth day action was witnessed by a large number of kabaddi lovers.

Earlier, after winning the toss, defending champions India maintained their supremacy against strong Iran team winning a tense clash by 50-39. Players from both the sides exhibited top class kabaddi during the tough contest. In the first half, Iranian players managed to carry their points parallel to India at 26-23, however, India widened the points gap in the second half and ultimately won the mach by 50-39.

India’s Deepak Kashi, Navjot Singh Jota, Vinay Khatri and Arsh Jhola remained prominent performers for the victorious team while Mesal Qamri, Mustafa Saadqi and Ameer Muhammadi accumulated valuable points for their team. India’s Vinay Khatri and Arsh Jhola were adjudged best raider and stopper respectively against Iran.

Players of both the teams competed without shirts in the second half following a controversy. The jury ordered the players to play match without shirts on the request of Iranian players.

Though Sierra Leone won the toss against Germany, they lost their match badly by 43-14. Strong German team dominated their opponents in both raiding and stopping departments throughout the match. Germany’s Manpreet Singh and Kuldeep Singh were the best raider and best stopper of this one-sided match.

PCB partners SNTV for HBL PSL 2020

Turkish President presented guard of honour at PM House

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was on Thursday presented a guard of honour during an official welcome ceremony held here at the Prime Minister House.

Upon arrival at the PM House, President Erdogan was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

President Erdogan, who was presented a salute and guard of honour by a smartly turned-out contingent of the armed forces, reviewed the guard.

National anthems of the two countries were also played on the occasion.
Later, Prime Minister Imran Khan and President Recep Rayyip Erdogan introduced their respective delegartions.

Earlier, President Erdogan was accorded a warm red-carpet welcome at the Nur Khan airbase as he arrived on a two-day official visit to Pakistan. Prime Minister Imran Khan received the Turkish leader. So far, 5 sessions of the HLSCC have been held, alternately in Islamabad and Ankara.

Khusro invites Opposition to jointly work for invigorating economy

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Minister for National Food Security Khusro Bakhtiar Thursday invited the Opposition to work out a charter of economy, outlining a reform package for revival of agriculture, industry, tax collection, banking and energy sectors in the country.

Speaking in the National Assembly, the minister said the government was facing
economic challenges including rising inflation and stagnant exports.

He said the federal government held a meeting on the issue of wheat and the
Sindh government had committed to procure 1.4 million tons a year.

He said when the government came into power, the foreign exchange reserves
were at $ 8 billion and the current account deficit was at $ 19 billion.The debt had
risen to 78 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), he added.

He said on the one side, Pakistan had the challenge of rising population and
on the other its per acre yield was low.

The government had devised export-oriented policies to increase exports, he
said adding prices of agricultural products were dependent on demand and supply
and the government was taking initiatives to keep prices low.

Speaking in the House, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal said the government itself
affirmed that people were facing the issue of price hikes and high inflation, adding
reportedly food inflation was at 24 percent in rural areas.

He said the concerns of Opposition regarding inflation and economic slowdown
had proven right.

Ahsan said in 2018, the World Bank had projected a growth rate of six percent
while in 2019 it forecast growth of 2 percent and added the nation may be informed
about the real reasons.

PPP leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said at present Pakistan had the lowest economic
growth rate in the region.

He said poor people were badly affected due to worsening economic conditions.

Opposition parliamentary performance disappointing: Ch Fawad

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain Thursday said that the opposition parties parliamentary performance was disappointing.

Talking to media outside the Parliament House, he said that PPP and PML-N were in government for the last 40 years but were unable to tolerate PTI government for five years.

He said that the attitude of both the parties in the Parliament House was not appropriated.

He said that Parliament’s environment would be spoiled by use of abusive language. He said that there were billions of rupees of corruption charges against the opposition leader.

He said that government had no administrative control on National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

He said that PPP had always spoiled assembly environment when National Accountability Bureau (NAB) invited them for questioning.

Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said that he was not expecting that PPP would make personal attacks in the session of National Assembly. He said PPP was much interested in spoiling the environment of the session.

He said that opposition had also failed to share any proposal in the debate on the economic issues.

He said that social media was taking the space of the formal media and the need for the digital media was increasing.

He said that it was now time to regulate social media. He said that the digital media could be used for the issuing advertisements, which would create more problems for the formal media.

He said that the regulations under consideration were not aimed to ban social media. He said that this will restrict fake accounts being used against people, adding that it will be easy for the authorities to control it.

U.S. sale of integrated weapon system to India may disturb regional peace: FO

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Pakistan on Thursday expressed concern over the approval of the United States for sale of integrated air defence weapon system to India, saying the step would disturb the peace of already volatile region.

“The decision of U.S will have serious impact on the stability of the region,” Foreign Office Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui said at a weekly press briefing at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The U.S. Department of State on Monday approved a possible sale to India of military equipment, comprising an integrated air defense weapon system (IADWS). According to the U.S. Defence Security Cooperation Agency, the cost of the sale, if finalized, would be approximately $1.867 billion.

The FO spokesperson said the South Asia could not afford a race on weaponry among the nations.

On Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ&K), she said the 193rd day of lockdown had deprived the people from basic amenities of life as the valley had turned into a largest human jail in the history.

She expressed concern over the continuous ceasefire violations by India along the Line of Control resulting in several casualties, and said Pakistan had warned international community of any possible false flag operation by India.

Such provocations by the RSS-inspired Bharatia Janta Party government are designed to distract the consistent human rights violations, being carried out in Indian Occupied Kashmir, she added.

She called upon the international community to take notice of the situation as any irresponsible act by India could prove disastrous to regional peace and stability.

On visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Pakistan today, she said Pakistan and Turkey enjoyed unique brotherly relationship as both supported each other on important issues.

She said the visit would further strengthen the existing relationship into a more meaningful
partnership.

On upcoming visit of UN Secretary General Antoneo Guterrus to Pakistan on February 16-17, the spokesperson said he would attend a conference, marking the 40 years of Pakistan hosting the Afghan refugees.

She said the conference would will be attended by representatives from 20 countries as the
occasion would showcase Pakistan’s goodwill and compassion for refugees for four decades.

The international conference is taking place at a juncture when peace in Afghanistan has new prospects, she added.

She said the the UN Secretary General would also visit Lahore and Gurdwara Kartarpur
Sahib.

On favour from other countries for voting on upcoming decision on Financial Action Task Force (FATF), she said “We are always hopeful, always optimistic. We have international partners who would support us.”

Four Pakistani coronavirus patients discharged from Chinese hospital

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza has confirmed that four Pakistani students that had developed coronavirus disease in China were fully recovered now.

After recovery from the disease, they had been discharged from the hospital in China, Dr Zafar Mirza said in a statement. He added that 98% confirmed coronavirus patients were fully recovered.

He said some people were under observation for the virus across Pakistan. But all of their tests came negative, he added.

He said the government had reviewed the situation in the provinces and closely working with them to provide all assistance.

Dr Zafar Mirza said medical experts’ teams were present at the airports to receive and observe the passengers from China and not a single suspected case was found out yet.

He said that the government had taken all possible measures to protect citizens from coronavirus and its spread in the country. He added there was no coronavirus patient in the country.

He said that the government had adopted special measures at all airports of the country while in early days, all flights from China were suspended.

He added now flights from China started arriving in Pakistan where all preventive measures had been adopted.

He said that instructions had been issued to all major hospitals to make arrangements to receive the possible cases and provide them necessary care.

He said that a daily basis meeting was being held to monitor the situation and revising the facilities and services plan for the suspected patients. He however made it clear that so far no coronavirus patient was received at any hospital.

Dr Mirza said that he was personally monitoring the situation and meeting every 48 hours with heads of hospitals, health institutions and all relevant departments to review the situation.

He said the NIH had already issued an advisory and alert on novel coronavirus to all provincial health departments and specially Points of Entries (PoEs) at all airports and ground crossing in the country.

He said the advisory was issued with a purpose to alert and sensitize the health staff all over the country to remain vigilant about any suspected cases coming from affected areas of China and for early detection of suspected cases of novel coronavirus infection.

He said the NIH had activated its Emergency Operations Center to monitor the international dynamics of disease and coordination with Central Health Establishment (CHE), World Health Organizations (WHO) and provincial health departments for national prevention and control.

Govt. launches ‘Zindagi’ App to aware youth against synthetic drug penetration: NA told

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Minister of State for States and Frontier Regions Shehryar Afridi Thursday informed the National Assembly that the government has launched “Zindagi” App to create awareness amongst youth with regard to the hazardous effects of synthetic drug penetration.

Responding to a question, during question hour, he said that interactive sessions were also being arranged with all the schools and educational institutions regarding Zindagi App.

He said that country’s youth is responsible for ensuring bright future of the country therefore, parents and teachers will have to educate the youth about dangerous effects of drugs in their lives.

Hajj applications submission likely from Feb 24

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):The submission of Hajj applications to the designated bank branches for securing berth in the Government Hajj Scheme are most likely to start from February 24 and culminate within a fortnight, says official source.

Talking to APP, he said this year a total of 179,210 pilgrims would perform the sacred obligation of Hajj including 60 percent of them under government scheme and 40 percent under private scheme.

The government scheme Hajj package has already been been reduced to Rs480,000 and Rs470,000 for northern and southern regions respectively.

He asked the intending pilgrims to start their preparations for applying for the sacred journey. Constitute groups of their acquaintances, complete their relevant documents, arrange the amount as it has to be submitted along with the application, select their bank where the application is to be submitted.

The applicants of over 70-year age should clearly tick at the quota column given in the application for ensuring automatic selection.

The applicants, who had already applied during the last three years 2017, 2018 and 2019, should write the application numbers of their last three Hajj applications for ensuring automatic selection.

President Erdogan to address joint session of Parliament

Hamza aims to win U17, U19 titles of Asian, World C’ships

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Acclaimed Junior Squash player Mohammad Hamza Khan aims to add more feathers in his cap by winning two back-to-back international squash tournaments, taking place in the middle of current year.

In January, Hamza lifted the U15 title of the Dunlop British Junior Open 2020 outplaying England’s Yusuf Sheikh in the final in straight sets 3-0 by an 11-4, 11-3 and 11-7 score line at Birmingham, UK.

“I will feature in the Under-17 and U19 categories of the Asian Junior Championship and World Junior Championship to be held in June and July, respectively. I want to win both titles in the championships and make my country proud at international level,” he told APP on Thursday.

Hamza, who earlier trained in Peshawar, was now in Islamabad for further training, said the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) and coaches have been very supportive. “They have been providing all-out training and facilities to the junior players so that they can excel in international tournaments,” he said.

Hamza said Air Commodore (R) Aftab Qureshi, Director of Pakistan National Squash Academy (PNSA) had been a real motivation for him in the British Junior Open. “He (Aftab) used to visit me before my every match, just to keep my morale high and motivated during the whole event,” he added.

The British Junior Champion said he idolizes Squash Greats Jansher Khan and Jahangir Khan and aims to emulate their feats. “Squash legends Jansher and Jahangir took the country to an unmatchable feat as they clinched all major titles from World Open to the British Open during their time. My dream is to follow in their footprints,” he said.

KCR to be functional soon: Sheikh Rasheed

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Railway Minister Sheikh Rasheed Thursday assured that with the orders of Supreme Court (SC), Sindh government and Railways will start removing all encroachments that come in the way of Karachi Circular Railways (KCR) and it would be functional soon.

Talking to a private news channel, he reiterating his commitment that the federal government would ensure implementation of the KCR project without any delay and promised all-out assistance to Sindh government in this regard.

He said Karachi Circular Railway was the project of Sindh government but after the SC orders the ministry of railways would extend all possible cooperation and support to Sindh government for timely execution of the Karachi Circular Railways (KCR) project which will be complete soon where at least one train will be launch
in next three months.

The Railway Minister said that the Pakistan Railways had become the only railways in the world which was earning profit and achieving its target goals with highest ever revenue under the leadership of Prime minister Imran khan.

Minister also hailed the positive timely step of Justice Gulzar Ahmed for taking this issue seriously.

He said old tracks and signals were among the main causes of the accidents around Railway lines, adding, Main Line-1 (ML-1) was the only solution to all issues where work will start.

After the completion of ML-1 the train would complete its journey from Lahore to Karachi in six hours and from Rawalpindi to Karachi in eight hours adding new signals and tracks would also be constructed, he added.

He said that currently 138 trains were running on the track that was the achievement of Pakistan Railways.

Replying a Question regarding Wheat crises, he said there is no wheat and sugar crises but in past mismanagement was the reason behind this issue, adding, all the district administrations had been directed to ensure government rates of the wheat flour in their respective areas as some of the dealers had created artificial crisis of the flour in provinces.

He said strong policies and prudent economic plans of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government had put the country on the way of prosperity.

IPC Minister all praise for Balochistan female athletes

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Federal Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC), Dr Fehmida Mirza while lauding female players of Balochistan who have shown tremendous performances in South Asian Games and in Taekwondo Championships said providing them with international exposure and coaches would uplift their confidence to another level.

She said this during her meeting with Pakistan’s ambassador designate to South Korea Ms. Mumtaz Zahra Baloch who called here at her office, said a press release issued here.

The minister asserted that the ambassador could assist and venture towards signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Seoul and Islamabad pertaining to mutual cooperation in sports and tourism. Such an agreement would include providing training to our coaches and athletes and visits of South Korean players to Pakistan.

The minister underscored that the trainings would motivate the athletes and would also provide them with international exposure. “This will help boost their confidence level and will also project a soft image of Pakistan through sports diplomacy,” she said.

Dr Fehmida congratulated the ambassador for her new assignment to South Korea and said that Islamabad and Seoul have been enjoying cordial relations for the last several decades.

“Pakistan gives immense importance to its friendly relations with South Korea and wants to expand it even further in all the fields particularly in sports and tourism,” she said.

While appreciating the role of Pakistani females who were playing, in all fields, she said, “It is very encouraging to see our women excelling in all spheres. Females have always proven themselves to be very efficient diplomats. They work with great zeal and create a difference when given such assignments.”

Dr Fehmida lamented that sports and tourism have never been given much attention, although they can prove to be very effective in enhancing relations with other countries and could yield numerous benefits for our country.

She emphasized that Pakistan’s youth has immense potential in sports and efforts should be made to reap the benefits out of this. She also proposed that the ambassador could seek the help of Seoul towards sports infrastructure development particularly in Balochistan like football grounds, sports academies etc.

The minister wished the ambassador good luck for future assignments. Meanwhile the ambassador also assured that she would strive to bolster cordial relations with South Korea.

Qasim Suri inaugurates PRCS ‘blood donation’ campaign

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri Thursday inaugurated Pakistan Red Crescent Society’s (PRCS) countrywide “blood donation” campaign by donating blood here outside the Parliament House.

Talking to media, Deputy Speaker welcomed PRCS Chairman Abrarul Haq at the
pre-launch blood donation campaign from Parliament House.

He said that PRCS was specially invited to initiate this campaign for the great cause from here.

He said that Minister for Communications was working on the plan to reduce accidents on the roads where mostly people died due to blood related issues.

Chairman Pakistan Red Crescent Society, renowned singer Abrar ul Haq, said that the PRCS had started this campaign from the Parliament House today. He said that PRCS was providing its services in more than 192 countries in case of disasters on humanitarian basis.

He said that PRCS was working on short, medium and long term programmes to further increase its capacity. He said that annually 38,000 people died in road accidents in the country, many of them due to shortage of blood. He said Turkey was the biggest supporter of this humanitarian efforts.

He said that this campaign was not just of a political party but purely initiated on humanitarian basis.

Late composer Robin Gosh remembered on death anniversary

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):The man behind some of Lollywood’s most popular music, Robin Ghosh was remembered on his fourth death anniversary on February 13. He was the husband of legendary Pakistani actor, Shabnam.

Of his many achievements, one of the greatest was the songs he composed for Aaina – one of the most successful films ever made in the Pakistan film industry.

Veteran personalities like music composer Ustad Tafu, lyric writer Altaf Bajwa and tabla player Khadim Hussain talked about the good times they spent with the late composer.

The six-time Nigaar award winner started his music career in the early 1960s, Ghosh belted out several hits for Pakistani films including Chaahat, Dooriyan and Chakori amongst many others. He was popular for lending his vocals for the tracks of yesteryear singers including Ahmed Rushdi, A Nayyer and Akhlaq Ahmed.

PM directs to expedite process for National Action Plan to counter adulteration in food items, check prices of edible items

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP): Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday directed to expedite the process of formulation of a National  Action Plan within a week to counter adulteration in edible items and to check prices of various edible commodities.

The prime minister was chairing a review meeting regarding prices of edible commodities, price control, hoarding, profiteering and counter measures to check adulteration in the country.

The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Planning, Minister for National Food Security Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar, PM’s Advisor on Trade Abdul Razak Dawood, Special Assistant to the PM on Information and Broadcasting Dr Fiefous Ashiq Awan and senior officials of the respective ministries while Chief Ministers of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan provinces and other senior officials, participated
through video-links.

The prime minister directed for expediting the process of establishment of a National Demand Supply Cell to maintain the prices of essential commodities like wheat, sugar and prices and demand and supply of other commodities and crops. The prime minister directed to fulfill the requirements of work-force of the ministry of National Food Security in that regard.

Provincial Chief Secretaries briefed the prime minister about tendency of adulteration in essential food items like milk, ghee, edible oil, drinking water, meat, pulses and other items.

Taking strict notice of adulteration in edible items, the prime minister said adulteration in food items would not be tolerated and strict action would be taken against those who were playing with lives of people.

The prime minister directed the chief secretaries to establish a national action plan and a road map within one week to check this curse and prepare a comprehensive .policy for the next meeting.

The prime minister was informed that as a whole prices of essential food commodities and other items remained stable in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces and Islamabad while prices of some items decreased. However, the prime minister was told that prices of various commodities witnessed increase in Sindh province.

The prime minister was told that according to decision of the federal government, provision of four lakhs ton of wheat from Pakistan Agricultural and Storage Corporation (PASCO) had almost been completed while the their one lakh ton of other request would be considered in meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC).

The prime minister expressed serious concern over increase in prices of flour in Karachi and directed the chief secretary Sindh to ensure immediate steps to control flour price and making effective administrative measures against hoarders and profiteers.

The meeting was directed to control hike in prices of various commodities, including wheat and flour, while the Balochistan government was directed to establish food testing laboratory to check adulteration in various food items.

The prime minister appreciated the steps taken by the provincial governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to control prices and taking administrative actions against hoarding and profiteering.

The meeting also reviewed various measures taken by the incumbent government to check adulteration, hoarding and inflation in the country.

Renowned poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s 109th birth anniversary observed

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Famous intellectual, revolutionary Urdu Poet ‘Faiz Ahmad Faiz’ was remembered on his 109th birth anniversary on Thursday (today).

Faiz Ahmad Faiz was born on February 13, 1911 in Sialkot, the birthplace of Poet of the East, Allama Muhammad Iqbal. After having completing his education, Faiz worked as a teacher, journalist and a politician as well.

He also served in British Army before independence of Pakistan and was promoted up to a rank of lieutenant-colonel. However Faiz resigned in 1947 to join Pakistan Times, a local newspaper of progressive narrative.

Faiz was also among the first ever official Pakistani delegation to visit Bangladesh. On conclusion of Bangladesh tour he wrote his famous Ghazal “Hum Kay Thehray Ajnabi”.
Faiz Ahmad Ahmad was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1963, which was equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the then USSR, PTV news channel reported.

Faiz Ahmad Faiz wrote dozens of ghazals, dialogues and songs for films. Faiz breathed his last on 20th November 1984 at the age of 73 years. He buried in Lahore’s Gulberg graveyard.

His notable works include Naqsh-e-Faryadi, Dast-e-Sabah and Zindan-nama.
Faiz married Alys Faiz a British national who had a tremendous influence on his life and poetry.

They had two daughters Saleema and Muneeza. Alys’ influence on Faiz’s life and poetry is reputed to have been enormous.

Moreover, Faiz spent much of the 1950s and 1960s promoting communism in Pakistan.

In the 1965 war between India and Pakistan, he worked in an honorary capacity in the Department of Information.
