COMSTECH to hold 10th STEP on Facing Elderly

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): COMSTECH, in collaboration with MSTF, will jointly organize the 10th Science and Technology Exchange Program (STEP) with a focus on “Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy (MOIP) Towards Facing Elderly in Islamic World” from of June 4 to 6, realizing the immense importance of this mission.

According to an official of COMSTECH, Mustafa (Peace be Upon Him) Science and Technology Foundation (MSTF) focused on increasing the capacity of actual and potential role-players who avidly seek the advancement of science, technology, and innovation in the Islamic World so as to affect the fulfillment of the modern Islamic civilization.

This event will bring together stakeholders from various sectors, including government, academia, technology development, and more, from all over the world to address different aspects of elderly in the Islamic world through MOIP.

The three-day event will comprise over Scientific, technological, and policy-making panels, keynote speeches, and round tables, focusing on the areas including Elderly Issues in Islamic World, Implementing MOIP for Facing Elderly in Islamic World, Success Stories Worldwide in Facing Elderly, Science and Technology Trends in Facing Elderly, Scientific and Technological Achievements in Facing Elderly.

The event will also feature Academia to Academia (A2A) meetings and workshops during the three-day period.

The self-funded or participants supported by their parent institutions are encouraged to apply while accommodation will be available for limited number of selected participants.
About the eligibility criteria, the official informed that the relevant nationals of OIC member and observer states can apply for physical or virtual participation till May 04.

Textile exports earn $12.444 billion for Pakistan in 9 months

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): Pakistan earned $12,444.820 million from exports of textile products during the first nine months of the current financial year (2023-24), the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported here on Thursday.

The exports of the textile product however, witnessed a nominal decline of 0.25 percent during July-March (2023-24) as against the exports of $ 12,476.444 million during July-March (2022-23).

The textile commodities that witnessed positive trade growth included raw cotton, the exports of which grew by 331.88 percent, from $12.987 million last year to $56.086 million this year.

Likewise, the exports of cotton yarn increased by 38.17 percent, from $ 573.084 million last year to $ 791.808 million this year and bed wear by 2.78 percent, from $ 2,031,740 million to $ 2,088,267 million.

The export of towels also surged by 5.17 percent from $745.288 million to $783.799 million whereas the export of made-up articles up by 0.17 percent to $535.662 million from $534.764 million.

The textile commodities that witnessed negative growth include cotton cloth, exports of which declined by 7.49 percent, from $1,538.032 million to $1,422.882 million; cotton carded or combed by 24.50 percent, from $0.996 million to $0.752 million; yarn other than cotton yarn by 19.15 percent, from $32.917 million to $26.613 million, and knitwear by 4.43 percent, from $ 3,390.332 million to $ 3,240.272 million.

Likewise, the exports of tents, canvas and tarpaulin decreased by 15.09 percent, from $102.766 million to $87.254 million, ready-made garments by 2.27 percent, from $2,657.265 million to $ 2,596.926 million.

The exports of art, silk and synthetic textiles also decreased by 11.56 percent declining from $309.432 million to $273.659 million, whereas the exports of all other textile materials also went down by 1.10 percent, from $546.841 million to $540.839 million.

Meanwhile, on a year–on–year basis, the textile exports increased by 3.29 percent going up from $ 1,257.799 million in March 2023 to $ 1,299.173 million in March 2024.

On a month-on-month basis, the textile exports, however, decreased by 7.67 percent when compared to the exports of $ 1,407.105 million in February 2024.

IRSA releases 182,100 cusecs water

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): Indus River System Authority (IRSA) on Thursday released 182,100 cusecs water from various rim stations with inflow of 263,800 cusecs.

According to the data released by IRSA, water level in River Indus at Tarbela Dam was 1431.38 feet and was 33.38 feet higher than its dead level of 1,398 feet. Water inflow and outflow in the dam was recorded as 43,500 cusecs and 5,000 cusecs respectively.

The water level in River Jhelum at Mangla Dam was 1122.70 feet, which was 72.70 feet higher than its dead level of 1,050 feet. The inflow and outflow of water was recorded 58,200 cusecs and 15,000 cusecs respectively.

The release of water at Kalabagh, Taunsa , Guddu and Sukkur was recorded as 108,300, 74,500, 35,300 and 7,800 cusecs respectively. Similarly, from River Kabul, a total of 129,000 cusecs of water released at Nowshera and 27,000 cusecs were released from River Chenab at Marala.

Govt chalks out concrete road-map for reforms in power sector: Awais Leghari

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP): Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari on Thursday said that on the directives of Prime Minister, a concrete road-map had been chalked out bring comprehensive reforms in country’s power sector to control power pilferage, over-billing and circular debt.

Addressing a pressing conference, he said after assuming charge of the ministry, short comings of the power sectors were reviewed to address chronic issues permanently.

The government was committed to bringing improvement in the energy sector, he added.

He reiterated that no leniency would be given to the power pilferers irrespective of their status and position adding that over-billing would also not be tolerated at any cost.

Solid strategy had also been devised to eliminate menace of power theft in the country. he said.

The minister said lower-middle class had been suffering from the power theft and we had to rectify existing shortcomings in the power system.

He went on to say that accumulative loss of power distribution companies (DISCOs) would surge to Rs 560 billion by June.

Electricity units worth over Rs 300 billion were consumed by the power pilferers, he added.

He said it was the need to hour to deal such power pilferers and officials involved in this illegal practices strictly.

The country could not afford such misappropriation of billions of rupees to the economy, he added.

He vowed not sparing even higher officials such as XENs, SDOs, Chief Engineers involved in patronage of power pilferage.

He claimed that around 20 per cent officials of power sector were involved in this dirty practice.

Awais said that all CEOs had already been directed to remove ‘kunda’ before April 23 failing which strict action would be taken against the responsible officials.

The minister appreciated the support of Interior ministry and FIA for supporting the DISCOs to eliminate power theft.

Replying to a question, he said that solar panels having 6800 megawatts capacity were imported in current year adding that mostly the people were shifting on off grid.

In winter season, incentive package would have to introduce to increase power demands to meet capacity payment demand, he added.

To another question, the minister said that the circular debt was around Rs 2400 to Rs 2500 billion and out of which
Rs 1900 billion was under the head of recovery.

To a separate question, he said that tariff adjustment was related to monthly fuel cost adjustment or quarterly cost adjustment mechanism.

Police bust motorcycle lifter gang

PESHAWAR, Apr 18 (APP):Police have busted a motorcycle lifter gang and recovered 10 stolen motorcycles along with weapons used in the crime.
A team from Shah Qabool Police Station, using modern scientific investigation techniques, arrested four members of the motorcycle lifter gang and recovered stolen bikes, weapons used in crimes, and drugs.
 The arrested suspects are also involved in selling stolen motorcycles after stripping them for parts.
 Meanwhile, police also arrested a street criminal in injured condition after a shootout in the jurisdiction of Agha Meer Jani Shah Police Station and recovered two stolen mobile phones, one motorcycle, and a weapon.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Kashif Zulfiqar said that a police alert has been issued in the district, and a large-scale search and strike operation has been launched.
He stated that the crackdown will be intensified against criminals and drug sellers to purge society from crimes.

FPCCI waives off 50% membership fee of women chambers

ISLAMABAD, Apr 18 (APP):The Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) on Thursday announced waiver off 50% membership fee for women chambers.
President FPCCI Atif Ikram Sheikh in a statement issued here said that the country and society cannot progress without the full role of women, adding the initiative of reducing membership fee was important for women empowerment.
 “We have fulfilled our promise, for which the full credit goes to the leadership of United Business Group (UBG), who had promised this during the election campaign,” he added.
Ikram said that Pakistani women were extremely talented and the chamber was striving to empower them in the economic field.
“If Pakistan is to progress, we have to make our women educated, skilled and empowered to business women,” he added.

Punjab Govt making all-out efforts to provide relief to citizens

RAWALPINDI, Apr 18 (APP): The Punjab government was making all-out efforts to provide relief to the citizens, said members of the Punjab Assembly, Ch. Naeem Ijaz and Ziaullah Shah on Wednesday.

Ch. Ijaz informed that the MPAs along with district administration officers were visiting markets and checking implementation of the prices of Rotti and Naan fixed by the provincial government.

Members of the Provincial Assembly were active in ensuring the implementation of the prices of Rotti and Naan, he added.

The Punjab government had fixed the price of 100 grams Rotti at Rs 16, while the price of 120 grams Naan at Rs 20.

The implementation of the new rates of Rotti and Naan would be ensured at all cost, Chaudhry Naeem Ijaz said.

Teams had been formed in Rawalpindi district on the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, Ch. Naeem Ijaz added.

The prices of flour had come down which was providing relief to the poor people, Ziaullah Shah said adding, the reduction in flour prices would benefit the citizens.

He informed that 10 tandoor owners selling Rotti and Naan at high rates were warned while one tandoor was sealed.

893,000 students appear in SSC exams in KP

PESHAWAR, Apr 18 (APP):The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) final examinations have started across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa wherein about 893,000 registered students would appear.
According to education department, 422,000 female students and 471,000 male students had submitted their documents for SSC final exam.
As many as 3,528 examination halls had been established across KP while 23,996 invigilator would perform exam duty.
Chairman Peshawar Board Professor Nasrullah Yousafzai said that 178,335 students would appear in the exam under Peshawar Education Board, adding 61,879 female students were among the students.
He said all the examination halls were equipped with hidden cameras for strict monitoring of the examination.
