SAARC Chamber urges Afghan Taliban to fulfill their Doha pledges

LAHORE, Apr 21 (APP): The SAARC Chamber has called upon the Afghan Taliban to fulfill their commitment, made in Doha, which was aimed at promoting peace in the region, particularly between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and preventing the Afghan soil from being used against Pakistan.
Talking to a delegation of traders, led by Muslim Khan Buneri here on Sunday, SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry former president Iftikhar Ali Malik said the Doha agreement, signed between the United States and the Taliban in February 2020, outlined various commitments from both sides. One key aspect of the agreement was the Taliban’s assurance that they would not allow Afghan territory to be used by any group or individual to threaten the security of other countries, including Pakistan, he added.
By urging the Taliban to honour the commitment, the trade leader emphasised the significance of stability and cooperation between Muslim nations. By preventing Afghan soil from being used for activities that could harm Pakistan, he believed that both countries could work towards maintaining peace in the region.
He said that promoting peace and stability in the region was crucial for fostering economic growth, facilitating trade, and enhancing the overall well-being of people in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
By reminding the Afghan Taliban of their commitment, Iftikhar Malik emphasised playing a constructive role in maintaining peace and security in the region. However, the ultimate responsibility lies with the Afghan Taliban to follow through on their commitments and work towards creating an environment of peace and cooperation with their neighbours, including Pakistan.
He said Pakistan had raised the issue of cross-border terrorism with the Afghan authorities on a number of occasions, but nothing concrete had materialised. He said under prevailing simmering tension, it was high time for the top leadership of the Afghsn Taliban to take immediate stringent steps to prevent the TTP from launching attacks and dismantle their bases. This is direly needed for good brotherly relations between the two countries, he concluded.

PFC to participate in 5-day Canton Fair China

ISLAMABAD, Apr 21 (APP): A delegation of the Pakistan Furniture Council (PFC) will participate in 135th 5-day Canton Fair China commencing from April 23 aiming to explore export markets and foster bilateral trade relations.
Chairing council board of directors meeting, PFC Chief Executive Officer Mian Kashif Ashfaq said this strategic move underscores Pakistan’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the global furniture industry, said a news release here on Sunday.
He said the delegation’s agenda likely includes networking with potential buyers, engaging in business-to-business meetings, and gaining insights into emerging trends and consumer preferences in the global furniture market.
He said by actively participating in events like the Canton Fair, the PFC aims to bolster Pakistan’s presence in the international furniture trade arena and establish long-term partnerships with key stakeholders.
He further informed this initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader economic objectives of enhancing exports, attracting foreign investment, and promoting entrepreneurship within the furniture sector.
He said The Canton Fair, held biannually in Guangzhou, China, is renowned as one of the largest trade fairs worldwide, attracting thousands of exhibitors and buyers from various industries.
PFC, participation in such a prestigious event presents an invaluable opportunity to showcase Pakistan’s craftsmanship, innovation, and diverse range of furniture products to an international buyers, he concluded.

EUM syndicate sets up endowment fund

MULTAN, Apr 21 (APP): Emerson University Multan (EUM) syndicate established an endowment fund with seed money of Rs 10 million in its 4th meeting for varsity development.
Chaired by Secretary of Higher Education Department (HED) , Dr. Farrukh Naveed, the meeting approved all agenda items unanimously lauding the university’s strides in introducing market-driven programmes, embracing technological advancements, fostering sports and co-curricular activities, championing environmental initiatives, and nurturing self grooming development programmes.
Building on the momentum, the Syndicate appreciated the launch of new programs in in-demand fields like Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Biotechnology, Textile Design, Fashion Design, Allied Health Sciences, and more.
Among others the meeting was attended by Dr. Abdul Qadir Buzdar, Dr. Hayyat Awan, Dr. Muhammad Asif, Dr. Mamoona Ghani, Dr. Ashiq Hussain, Dr. Sarwat Jabeen, Dr. Mansoor Baloch, Shahsawar and  Dr. Muhammad Farooq.

Polling for by-elections on NA-44 ends peacefully in DI Khan

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Apr 21 (APP):The polling for by-elections on national assembly seat NA-44 has been concluded at 05:00 p.m. on Sunday peacefully in Dera Ismail Khan.
The polling started at 08:00 a.m. with citizens participating and using their right of franchise to elect their representative on the national assembly seat vacated by Ali Amin Gandapur upon after being elected as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister.
The polls remain peaceful across the constituency while the counting process has also been started at different polling stations. The total number of registered voters in the constituency was 396,661 including 211,032 men and 185,629 women.
A total of 358 polling stations including 126 for men and 115 for women besides combined ones were established to facilitate voters.
The foolproof security arrangements had been made at all polling stations as out of a total of 358, 134 polling stations were declared as normal, 221 as sensitive, and 03 as highly sensitive.
About 4000 police officers and personnel were deployed to perform security duties for the peaceful conduct of the polls in the constituency.

Over 5,000 policemen deployed for Pak vs NZ cricket matches

RAWALPINDI, Apr 21 (APP): Regional Police Officer (RPO) Rawalpindi Babar Sarfraz Alpa on Sunday visited Pinidi Cricket Stadium and reviewed the security arrangements for Pakistan vs New Zealand T20 series.
Among others, SSP Operations Flight Lieutenant (retd) Hafiz Kamran Asghar and other senior officers were present on the occasion. The SSP Operations also briefed the RPO Rawalpindi on the comprehensive security and traffic plans in place.
More than 5,000 officers has been deployed to perform security duties diligently. RPO Rawalpindi inspected the point-wise security and traffic arrangements in and around the stadium and instructed the concerned officers to ensure fool-proof security at all times.
Meanwhile, City Traffic Police (CTP) Rawalpindi had issued a traffic plan with the deployment of 367 personnel to keep the traffic flowing on alternative routes during the matches

Weather to remain partly cloudy, cold in KP

PESHAWAR, Apr 21 (APP): The weather in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will continue to be partly cloudy and cold for the next 24 hours.
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a chance of rain in most of the districts during this time.
The minimum temperature has been recorded as low as 16 degrees Celsius and it is likely to rise to a maximum of 23 degrees Celsius, the official of the Meteorological Department said. The humidity in the air has been recorded up to 80%.
Landslides are also feared in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to heavy rain and there is a fear of damage to standing crops and houses due to strong winds, hail, thunder and heavy rain.
Risk of inundation of low-lying areas due to rain and during the last 24 hours, there was rain with wind and thunder in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Malam Jabba 58mm, Dir (Upper 49, Lower 34), Kakul 43mm, Bacha Khan (Airport 41), Takht Bai 35mm, Darosh and Saidu Sharif recorded up to 28 mm of rain.

PHEC offers expertise to Kyrgyzstan to modernize education system

ISLAMABAD, Apr 21 (APP): Honorary Consul Kyrgyzstan Meher Kashif Younis on Sunday said Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) has offered its expertise to Kyrgyzstan for developing their existing educational disciplines on modern scientific lines at par with international standards to meet global challenges.
Talking to a delegation of industrialists at Kyrgyzstan Consulate, he said that he had a fruitful and result oriented meeting with Chairman PHEC Dr Shahid Munir (Tamgha-I-Imtiaz) who assured full cooperation for offering services, expertise and technical skills to Kyrgyzstan for significant improvements in their existing educational system especially technical higher education, said a news release.
He said collaboration with Kyrgyz  to enhance its educational system marks a significant step towards fostering global cooperation and academic advancement.
He said the partnership encompasses various aspects aimed at elevating the quality of education to international standards. PHEC  can offer expertise in curriculum development, drawing upon its own experience in aligning educational content with contemporary scientific principles and global best practices in addition to designing curricula that not only encompass core subjects but also emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical application of knowledge.
Meher Kashif Younis said Dr Shahid Munir is of the view that PHEC can provide training and capacity-building programs for Kyrgyzstani educators, equipping them with the pedagogical skills and methodologies necessary to deliver high-quality education.
This may include workshops, seminars, and teacher exchange programs aimed at fostering professional growth and knowledge sharing.

ECP seeks report of blank Form 45 signatures allegations

ISLAMABAD, Apr 21 (APP): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has sought a report from the Provincial Election Commissioner of Punjab concerning the issue of polling agents from PP-149, Lahore being asked to sign blank Form 45.
An ECP spokesperson told on Sunday that the Commission has taken notice of the Presiding Officer obtaining signatures from polling agents and sought a report for potential legal action.
