Romina calls for synergies, inclusive collaborations to beat plastic pollution

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP): Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Romina Khurshid Alam, on the instruction of the Prime Minister to implement every conceivable measure to combat plastic pollution, said on Monday that it was imperative to ensure synergies and inclusive collaborations to safeguard the planet from the scourge of plastic.

As she chaired a meeting of the Ministry and its affiliated organizations to review the measures she had mandated for Earth Day, being observed worldwide and in Pakistan, a week-long series of activities are scheduled to commemorate the occasion under the theme “Planet versus Plastic”, a news release said.

She underscored the importance of coordinated efforts from citizens, organizations and government entities to come together in the fight against the planetary menace of plastic.

She instructed senior officers to conduct surprise visits to various public entertainment venues and report on the enforcement of measures against plastic use. Emphasizing the need for increased signage prohibiting plastic, she highlighted the importance of clear messaging to the public. Visitors to Margalla Trails and Islamabad Zoo will now be required to bring refillable bottles, over 12,000 cloth bags will be distributed to children to encourage their parents to avoid using polythene bags.

The PM’s coordinator has also directed the enhancement of public awareness campaigns on the threats of plastic pollution to the environment.

Following the PM’s directive, the Environmental Protection Agency has begun manufacturing benches and planters from recycled single-use polythene bags, which will be placed within the ministry and expanded to public areas in the near future.

Pak Army provides free eye care facility to over 1,400 patients in KP

ISLAMABAD, April 22 (APP):In a humanitarian effort, the Pakistan Army organized a four-day free eye surgical camp in Mohmand district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, providing essential eye care to over 1,400 patients.
          The camp, held with the support of Al Shifa Eye Trust, offered free screenings, surgeries, and medication to residents of the far flung area, PTV reported on Monday.
          During the camp, 885 men, 544 women, and 245 children received free eye screening.
          A total of 754 patients were provided with free spectacles, and over 1,100 patients received free medication.
         The camp aimed to address the lack of access to quality eye care in the region, where patients often have to travel long distances for treatment. The local community expressed their gratitude to the Pakistan Army for organizing the camp, which brought much-needed medical attention to their doorstep.
       The initiative is part of the Pakistan Army’s efforts to extend basic health facilities to the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, promoting health and well-being in the region.

Veteran journalist Syed Haider Taqi passes away

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP):Syed Haider Taqi, a seasoned journalist and editor of Daily Jang’s editorial page, passed away in Karachi on Monday after a prolonged illness.
Taqi was born into a family of intellectual and literary giants. His father, Syed Muhammad Taqi, was a philosopher and former editor of Daily Jang. His uncles, Raees Amrohvi and Jaun Elia, were renowned poets and columnists, private news channel reported.
Taqi’s funeral prayers will be held at Defence Phase IV Imambargah Yasrab, followed by his burial at Defence Phase VIII graveyard in Karachi.
He is survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters.

PESCO notifies power suspension for Peshawar, Nowshera

Likewise, its said that power supply will remain suspended from Peshawar University Grid Station on 23rd and 25th April from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. resultantly, consumers of University Campus, Canal Town, Malakandher, Engineering, Regi, Taj Abad, Taj Abad 2, Agriculture, Mera Achini, HMC, Ring Road, Danish Abad, Ghrib Abad, Rahatabad 1, CMB and Abdara feeders will face inconvenience. The power supply will remain suspended from Rehman Baba Grid Station on 23rd and 25th April from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. resultantly, consumers of Kachori, Shalozai, Safdar Abad, Khanmust, New Hazar Khwani, Surizai, Phandu Baba, Urmar 2, Hazar Khwani, Yakatoot, New Chairman Daftar, Jameel Colony, Ring Road, Beri Bagh, Rashid Ghari, Surizai, Akhon Abad, Ring Road 2, SIDB feeders will face inconvenience.
Moreover, it said that power supply will remain suspended from Kohat Road Grid Station on 23rd and 25th April from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. resultantly, consumers of PAF Express, Kohat Road, Wazir Bagh, Sonehri Masjid, Bana Mari, Civil Quarter, Nothia, Murshad Abad, Abasin, Old Deh Bahadar, Deh Bhadar, Wazir Abad, Ameen Colony Bara, Nodhya Payan, Murshid Ababad, Dora Road, Nodiya Bahadar, Lundi Arbab 1, 2, 3, Sheikh Muhamadi, Pishtakhara, Swati Gate, Gulbarg, Scheme Chowk, Chairman Daftar feeders will face inconvenience.
The power supply will also remain suspended from Peshawar Cantt Grid Station on 24th April from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. resultantly, consumers of Tehkal, Islamia College, KTH, Commercial, Jahangir Abad, University Town, NCB, Airport, PAF Base, Saddar Road, Mall Road, MES 1, 2, Old MES, Babu Ghari, Marble Industry, CAA, Palosi 1, Behari Colony, Tehkal Payan, Bank of Khyber, Scarp 1 feeders will face inconvenience.
The power supply, it said will remain suspended from Nowshera City Grid Station on 23rd April from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. resultantly, consumers of Rashakai, New Bara Banda, Marble Zone, Kheshgi Express, Hakeem Abad, Abdullah Ostad feeders will face inconvenience.

AIOU commences final exams tomorrow

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP):Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is conducting examination of Associate degree (BA, B.Com), BBA, B.Ed and BS programs from today (April 23) throughout the country which will continue till June 27.
Date sheet is uploaded on the university website (www.aiou.edu.pk) and roll number slips are uploaded to students’ CMS portals, said a press release on Monday.
Vice Chancellor, AIOU, Prof Dr. Nasir Mahmood, has instructed the examinations department to ensure transparency and provide all necessary facilities to the students during the examinations.
Moreover, special teams will conduct surprise visits to the exam centres.

Rice exports grew by 83.37%, in 09 months

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP):Rice exports from the country during the first three quarters of the current financial year increased by 83.37 percent as compared to the exports of the corresponding period of last year.
During the period from July-March 2023-24, over 4.550 million metric tons of rice valuing $2.930 billion exported as against the exports of 2.939 million metric tons valued at $1.598 billion in the same period of last year, according the data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
The exports of Basmati rice grew by 36.37 percent during the period under review as over 545,220 metric tons of Basmati rice worth $622.345 million were exported as compared to the exports of 430,543 metric tons valued at $456.357 million in the same period last year.
In the last 09 months of the current financial year, the country earned $2.308 billion by exporting over 4.005 metric tons of rice of other varieties, which was recorded at 2.508 million metric tons valued at $1.114 billion in the same period of last year.
During the first three-quarters of the current financial year, the food group exports from the country grew by 48.17 percent as food commodities worth of $5.651 billion were exported as compared the exports of $3.814 billion in the same period of the last year.
On month on month basis, the food group exports from the country grew by 16.35 percent in month of March 2024 as compared to the exports of the same month of last year.
In March 2024 food commodities valued at 685.025 million were exported as compared the exports of $588.759 million of the same month of last year.
On the other hand food group imports into the country during the period under review went down by 14.23 percent as food imports came down from $7.333 billion in the first three quarters of the last financial year as compared the $6.290billion in the first 09 months of the current financial year.

Finance Minister meets foreign investors

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP):Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Muhammad Aurangzeb has held meeting with foreign investors including Chairman of Ayana Holding, Abdulla Bin Lahej and Chairman Nad Al Shiba Holding, Mohammed Hilal Bin Tarraf Al Mansoori, in Dubai.
According to press statement issued by finance ministry, the minister explored ways to enhance investment activity between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Pakistan by supporting existing economic partnerships and exploring further diversification to include areas of information technology, renewable energy, transport and logistics, infrastructure and real estate development.
He highlighted the competitive advantages that make Pakistan an ideal destination for investors seeking high returns and sustainable growth.
The minister also highlighted the role of Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in assisting investors at every stage of their journey, comprehensive support services including market research, regulatory guidance, investment facilitation, and post-investment support, ensuring a smooth experience.

PHA to beautify green belts in city

FAISALABAD, Apr 22 (APP):Parks And Horticulture Authority (PHA) Director General Abdul Qadir Shah has directed to
improve green belts and green areas in the city.
Under the instructions, green belts in crossings and main roads of the city will be improved
by planting colorful plants and flowers.
According to official sources, a comprehensive plan has been chalked out for repair, maintenance
and cleansing of commissioner office road, GTS chowk, Club road, Kutchery road, FDA road, and Bilal road.
They said green belts between roads would be streamlined and flowers of different varieties would be
planted for beautification of roads.

Sikh Yatrees bid farewell to Pakistan, express gratitude for warm hospitality

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP):A group of Sikh Yatrees (pilgrims) bid farewell to Pakistan on Monday, departing via the Wagah border for India after attending the Baisakhi festival ceremonies.
The Provincial Minister for Minorities, Ramesh Singh Arora, and officials from the Evacuee Trust Property Board were present to see them off.
Before their departure, the Sikh Yatrees expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the love and warmth they received during their visit to Pakistan, which they fondly referred to as their second home, PTV reported.
They commended the government of Pakistan for making excellent arrangements to facilitate their visit, ensuring a comfortable and peaceful stay.
The Sikh Yatrees’ departure marked the end of a successful and spiritually enriching visit, strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual respect between the two nations.

173 graduates awarded degrees in IMCG G10/4 convocation

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP):Islamabad model college for girls Post-Graduate G10/4 during its 22nd convocation, has awarded degrees to as many as 173 graduates in departments of BS Maths BSCS, BS Zoology and ADP among 67 graduates who got Roll of honor.
Moreover, six gold medals were also awarded to the top position holder students including Ayesha Taus BSCS, Sehrish BSCS , Noor Fatima BS Maths and Maham Ali in BS zoology.
The BS teachers also received a certificate of appreciation for their best results including

The convocation was held at the college auditorium on Monday in which DG FDE Dr. Muhammad Tanvir participated as the chief guest accompanied by guests of honor Dr. Aamer Saeed Bhatti, Dean of Natural Sciences QAU and Dr. Muhammad Anees former Dean Social Sciences QAU, while Principal Prof Saadia Ibrar presided over the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest .Muahmad Tanvir said “the development of Pakistan lies in the pursuit of modern education. The students should step into practical life. Now work side by side with men and make your place in society. Half of the population of our country consists of women, in which the number of working women is negligible”.
He also introduced the new project to be launched for students to enhance their skills in IT.
