MoU inked to provide skill based training to BISP beneficiaries’ family members

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP): A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) here on Monday to provide high quality technical and vocational education to the BISP beneficiaries’ families members.

The primary objective of the MoU was to establish a robust framework for cooperation between NAVTTC and BISP in executing the Skills Training Vouchers Programme.

This initiative was specifically designed to extend access to high-quality technical and vocational education to members of BISP beneficiary families.

The signing ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished personalities, including Chairperson BISP, Dr Muhammad Amjad Saqib, who witnessed the historic moment. Representing BISP, Ms Saira Atta, Director General (CI), and from NAVTTC, Shafiq Khokhar, Director General (P&D), formally inked the agreement, symbolizing a commitment to mutual cooperation and shared objectives.

Among the esteemed participants were Amir Jan, Executive Director NAVTTC, and Ms Gulmina Bilal Ahmed, Director General NAVTTC, alongside Director Generals from BISP, collectively underscoring the significance and collective dedication towards this collaborative endeavor.

Romina for enhanced role of children participation in shaping climate policy, planning

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP): PM’s Coordinator on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Romina Khurshid Alam in a meeting with the country director of Save the Children on Monday  agreed on the enhanced role of children participation while shaping the climate policy and planning to address the climate challenges.
They  discussed the participation of affected children in upcoming 29th conference of the parties (COP-29) meeting in Baku, a news release said.
“Pakistani affected children who are bearing the brunt of climate crisis, should apprise themselves to world’s leadership on climate”, she underscored.
Highlighting the world’s earth day, the PM’s coordinator  also stressed upon the active role of children to advocate their elders to stop the use of plastic bags in accordance with National Adaptation plan ( NAP).
It was agreed that climate agenda of the ministry would be promoted country wide through children in accordance with National Determined  Contributions ( NDCs).

Current Account records surplus of $619 mln in March

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP): The current account has witnessed surplus of $619 million during the month of March 2024, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported on Monday.
Cumulatively the current account balance for July to March (2023-24) has improved significantly; as deficit of $0.5 billion was recorded during the period as compared to the deficit of $4.1 billion during the corresponding period of last year, according latest SBP data.
“A current account surplus of $619 million has been recorded in Mar 2024. Cumulatively for Jul-Mar FY24, CAB improved significantly; recording a deficit of $0.5 billion only compared to $4.1 billion in Jul-Mar FY23,” said SBP.
According to SBP figures, the merchandize trade deficit during July-March (2023-24) was recorded at $-15,757 million as compared to the deficit of $21,079 million in July-March (2022-23).
Likewise, the services’ trade deficit was recorded at $-1,655 million during FY2023-24 compared to the deficit of $374 million during the corresponding period of last year.
The overall trade deficit in goods and services was recorded at $17,412 million during the current fiscal year compared to the deficit of $21,453 million during last year.
Meanwhile, the balance on primary income stood at negative 5,561 million against $4,000 million last year, according to the SBP data.

28 arrested for non-compliance of official prices of roti, naan

LAHORE, Apr 22 (APP): The district administration, during a stringent crackdown on the non-compliance with the newly revised prices for roti and naan, Rs 16 and Rs 20 accordingly, has arrested 28 individuals and registered 33 cases over price-related violations.
During the move, 1,330 roti and naan points were inspected out of which 1,243 points were selling bread on official prices, while violations were reported at 87 points. The enforcement teams have fined Rs 80,000 to various tandoors over selling roti and naan on high prices.
The enforcement action was led by assistant commissioners and price control magistrates who conducted checks across various tehsils in Lahore.
The crackdown follows the directive of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The approved rates have been set at Rs16 for a 100-gram roti and Rs20 for a 120-gram naan. The district administration is actively ensuring the implementation of the new pricing across the city. Citizens are encouraged to report any discrepancies in roti and naan prices by calling the helpline 0800003245.

CM Punjab’s Bike Scheme: Students instructed to apply for bikes till April 29

MULTAN, Apr 22 (APP): Punjab government sought applications for the provision of electric and petrol bikes among students under the Punjab Chief Minister scheme and set April 29 as last date.
Provision of bikes to students will not only help address the issue of pollution but will empower students also, said Deputy Commissioner Multan Rizwan Qadeer while chairing a meeting here on Monday. It was decided in the meeting that the scheme would be advertised effectively. For awareness, a road show would be organized, he maintained.
The electric and petrol bikes will also help reduce road accidents. The Punjab government is offering 20,000 bikes to students after the balloting draw. There will be 19,000 petrol bikes and 1000 electric bikes. The meeting also decided to increase of number of pink buses to facilitate the women passengers in the city.
The meeting was attended by Regional Transport Secretary Rana Mohsin and many other officers from district administration.

Rescue 1122 organize event to mark World Earth Day

BAHAWALPUR, Apr 22 (APP): On World Earth Day, Punjab Emergency Service Rescue 1122 here on Monday organized an event, in which  officers and rescue workers from participated.
 District Emergency Officer Rescue 1122 Baqir Hussain, ensured awareness sessions and tree plantation in all tehsils of the district on this day.
He expressed that to make this earth safe and pleasant, everyone needed to play his role to ensure better environment for upcoming generation.  He emphasized that all members of society should plant trees and take good care of them.
Moreover, he mentioned that to reduce pollution, cities should be kept clean, energy should be conserved, the use of plastic bags should be stopped, water wastage should be prevented, and pollution from vehicles, buses, and other means of transport and factories should be reduced.
He advised to use cloth bags for shopping and never throw garbage on streets, roads and pathways.

CM approves 1KW solar systems for 50,000 homes

LAHORE, Apr 22 (APP): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Monday approved the grant of 1 kilowatt solar systems to 50,000 households in Punjab.
Presiding over a special meeting on “Light without Electricity Bill, Chief Minister’s Roshan Punjab Program” here, the CM was briefed on technical issues of the solar system for domestic consumers.
The CM said the Roshan Punjab Program aims to free the poor from expensive electricity. Approving the grant for the solar systems, the CM directed to start the pilot project immediately, in order to evaluate its efficiency.
Protected consumers consuming up to 100 units of electricity will be eligible under the program in the first phase, she mentioned. In the 1 KW system, two solar panels, battery, inverter, and wires will be provided to the consumer, she informed.
Earlier, the CM was briefed that the 1 KW solar system can run fans, lights, small motors etc. Up to 16 hours of charging backup can be achieved through the lithium iron battery.
The CM directed to install the solar system of the latest technology. She emphasized the need to use the best quality solar plates, inverter, batteries and other accessories. The scope of solar systems for domestic consumers will be extended gradually, she asserted.
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Information Minister Azma Zahid Bukhari, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, MPA Sania Ashiq, Chief Secretary, Chairman Planning and Development, Secretaries Energy, Finance, Chief Executive Officer PPDCL (Punjab Power Department Company Limited), Managing Director PPDB (Punjab Power Development Board) and other relevant officers attended the meeting.

UET Lahore improves its global ranking

LAHORE, Apr 22 (APP): The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore has made significant strides in its global standing, climbing to the 791-800 range in the QS World University Rankings.
This marked improvement, particularly compared to its previous position in the 801-1000 bracket in 2023, highlights its dedication to academic excellence and innovation. Out of 1500 universities worldwide and 14 universities from Pakistan evaluated this advancement underscores UET Lahore’s commitment to elevating its educational standards and solidifying its reputation as a leading institution in engineering and technology.
UET Lahore has achieved a remarkable feat in the QS World University Rankings by subject. Among the 14 Pakistani universities assessed, UET Lahore stands out in the domain of Engineering and Technology, securing the impressive position of 236. This significant advancement marks a notable improvement of 43 places from its previous ranking which was 279. In QS Asia Universities Ranking, the UET Lahore has sustained its last year position at 179.
According to the latest QS ranking data, the UET has improved its subject-wise world rankings considerably compared to 2023: Electrical & Electronic Engineering 201-250 compared to 251-300 last year; Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science & Information Systems remains the same 251-300 and 401-450 accordingly. UET has achieved its first time rankings in the domains of Mathematics with a ranking range of 501-550, Business & Management Studies with a ranking range of 601-620, and in Physics and Astronomy with a ranking range of 601-640.
UET Lahore’s commendable rise in the rankings underscores its commitment to excellence and innovation in STEM solidifying its reputation as a leading institution not only in Pakistan but also on the global stage.
