Rain brings relief, disruption to Lahore

ISLAMABAD, Apr 23 (APP): A light rain shower accompanied by a cool breeze brought relief to the residents of Lahore and its surrounding on Tuesday.

However, the rain also caused disruptions in electricity supply, leaving several parts of the city in darkness.

According to private news channels, various areas of the city, including Mall Road, Lakshmi Chowk, Gulshan Ravi, Ferozepur Road, Link Road, Johar Town, Thokar Niaz Baig, Township, Faisal Town, Garden Town, Awan Town, and Wahdat Road, received rain.

The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) reported that several feeders tripped due to the rain, resulting in power outages in various parts of the city.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted more rain in the city over the next 24 hours, bringing both relief and concern for the citizens of Lahore.

Central Asian Volleyball League in Islamabad next month

ISLAMABAD, Apr 23 (APP):Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) would organize the Central Asian Volleyball League in Islamabad next month with six teams already confirming their participation in the extravaganza.
PVF Chairman Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob who visited to the training camp of the national volleyball team here at Liaquat Gymnasium of the Pakistan Sports Complex said the federation has decided to organise the Central Asian Volleyball League at Islamabad from May 11 to 17.
Besides Pakistan, teams of Iran, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan will participate in the event. It is also hoped that India will also send its team to Pakistan, he said.
He said we have requested the government for financial support for the development of volleyball and to further improve the game’s standard. We want to see Pakistan team being the best in Asia, Yaqoob said and added that despite limited resources, PVF was providing all possible facilities to the national players.
PVF Chairman said the training camp of the national team was underway here for the preparations of the League. Iran is a strong team in the event but we are hoping that Pakistan will succeed in the mega event, he said.
He said all arrangements have been finalized for the successful holding of the League as this event would highlight the soft image of Pakistan to the world.
After the departure of Brazilian coach, now the services of the Argentine coach have been hired for the national team as well as we are trying our best to provide the maximum international events to the young talented player despite the limited resources, he said.
Yaqoob said that there will be three matches in a day. We are preparing the Liaquat Gymnasium according to international requirements for the league. I also plan to meet minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) for holding the event in a befitting way, he said.

Govt to re-constitute committee on issue of missing persons: Law Minister

ISLAMABAD, Apr 23 (APP):Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar on Tuesday said that the incumbent government was serious to address the long standing issue of missing persons and was going to re-constitute the committee on it.
He was addressing a press conference here along with Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar.
The law minister said that 10,200 cases of missing persons were registered in the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (CIoED) out of which around 8,000 case have been addressed.
He said that the former PDM led government formed a committee on the issue with the representation of all stakeholders including BAP party, PMQ, JUI, PPP and others. Now the incumbent government was going to re-constitute the Parliamentary committee to continue its work on the subject.
Azam Nazeer said that the issue of missing persons was four decades old thus it couldn’t be resolved over the night. He said that the involvement of government institutions in the matter couldn’t be denied but no concrete evidence was ever produced before the committee in this regard.
He said that reports of missing persons were also not 100% correct every time. Two people were facing jail sentences in various cases while one was found among the attackers of Gawadar attack, he said.
The Pakistan army and people, he said, have lost number of lives in the incidents of terrorism in the country. He said that there was a need to get a political solution along with the legal efforts, adding that if anyone was found involved in a crime he must be prosecuted.

Mirpurkhas authorities acts fast to combat floods

Mirpurkhas, Apr 23 (APP): Deputy Commissioner Dr. Rashid Masood Khan called for an important meeting with officials to address the extensive damage caused by recent floods in Tehsil Jhudo and Sindhri, on Tuesday.

According to the DC office, the meeting aimed to identify solutions to prevent future flooding and destruction.

In the meeting, the decisions were taken to build embarkments along Dhoropuran river, identify encroachments and remove them, clear debris from old bridges, identify important factors contributing to floods.

The meeting emphasized the need for collective action to protect the district’s towns and villages.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Rashid Masood Khan urged elected representatives, locals and former officials to work together to clean occupied sewers and drains and end encroachments.

Shipping activity at Port Qasim

KARACHI, Apr 23 (APP):Shipping activity was report at the port where four ships namely, MSC Rikku, Seacon Yokohama, Khairpur and Navigator Vega scheduled to load/offload Container, Rice, Mogas and Chemicals, berthed at Container Terminal, Grain Terminal, Oil Terminal and Engro Terminal respectively on Monday.
Meanwhile two more ships, Express Salween and Lokojo with Containers and LNG also arrived at outer-anchorage of the Port Qasim on today morning.
A total of seven ships were engaged at PQA berths during the last 24 hours, out of them a Liquefied Natural Gas carrier ‘Gaslog Sydney’ left the Port on today morning while four more ships, Navigator Vega, Dravin, Bo-Mustafa-O and Express Salween are expected to sail on today afternoon.
A cargo volume of 81,888 tonnes, comprising 61,753 tonnes imports cargo and 20,135 tonnes export cargo carried in 2,092 Containers (1,400 TEUs Imports and 692 TEUs export) was handled at the port during last 24 hours.
There are 5 ships at Outer Anchorage of Port Qasim, out of them three ships,Bateleur, Lokoja and Express Salween & another ship, Maersk Detroit carrying LPG, LNG and Container are expected to take berths at EVTL, PGPCL and QICT on today 23rdApril, while four morecontainer ships, Atlantic Ibis, San Francisco Bridge, MSC Sindy and Marathopolis are due arrive at Port Qasim on Wednesday.

Police foils attempt of oil smuggling

MUZAFFARGARH, Apr 23 (APP):Police foiled an attempt of smuggling Iranian oil and arrested two besides recovering 69700 litre smuggled oil during a special operation conducted by the police on Tuesday.
As per directives of the District Police Officer (DPO) Syed Husnain Haider, a special initiative has been taken by the police to prevent smuggling of oil and other products.
A police team of Chowk Qureshi police station under the supervision of Station House Officer (SHO) Abdul Rauf, foiled an attempt of smuggling Iranian oil through a gas container and seized 69700 litre oil.
The police also arrested two persons and later, handed over the recovered oil and the outlaws to custom intelligence department for further legal action.
District Police Officer (DPO) Syed Husnain Haider lauded the police team and directed officers concerned to continue crackdown against the persons involved in illegal activities.
He said that action would continue to prevent smuggling.
