Delegation from CMCC, CMPak visit PTA

ISLAMABAD, Apr 25 (APP):A senior-level delegation of China Mobile Communications Group Co. Ltd. (CMCC) and the CEO of China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak) visited the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and met with the Authority.
Chairman PTA, Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman shared Pakistan’s telecom sector achievements with the delegation.
On the occasion, Member Finance (PTA)  Muhammad Naveed and Member Compliance & Enforcement (PTA), Dr. Khawar Sidique Khokhar,  were also present and shared insights about the sector, said a news release issued here on Thursday.
Mr. Tong Tengfei, Group Leader of Discipline Inspection and Supervision, and Huo Junli, Chairman and CEO of CMPak discussed growth potential in the telecom sector and areas of mutual benefits.
The meeting served as an opportunity for both parties to explore collaboration avenues and share insights on advancements in the telecommunications industry.

Mohsin Naqvi reconstitutes women’s selection committee

PESHAWAR, Apr 25 (APP): Mohsin Naqvi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, has reconstituted the national women’s selection committee, expanding it to seven members.

This decision follows the disappointing performance of the Pakistan women’s team against the West Indies Women, resulting in a 3-0 loss in the three-ODI series.

The retained members from the previous panel include Asmavia Iqbal and Marina Iqbal. Joining them are Abdul Razzaq and Asad Shafiq (both members of the men’s national selection committee) and former international player, Batool Fatima.

In line with the men’s national selection committee make-up, the coach and captain will also be part of the national women’s selection committee.

The immediate task of the new selection committee will be to choose the Pakistan women’s team for the upcoming tour of England, where they are scheduled to play three T20Is and three ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 fixtures from 11 to 29 May.

Despite the recent 3-0 loss to the West Indies, Pakistan currently holds the fifth position in the 10-team ICC Women Championship 2022-25.

The top five teams from this championship, along with hosts India, will directly qualify for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. The remaining teams will participate in a Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament.

Domestic wheat production grew by 5.4%, 29.69 mln tons output estimated during current season

ISLAMABAD, Apr 25 (APP):The Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) was informed on Thursday that wheat production in the country during the current season (2023–24) grew by 5.4 percent as compared to the output of the corresponding period of the last year.
The FCA met here with Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain in chair, which was also attended by the relevant federal and provincial authorities.
While reviewing the performance of the Rabi crops (2023–24), the Committee observed that wheat production for the current season was estimated at 29.69 million tons as the crop was sown over an area of 9.6 million hectares.
The output of other crops, including onions, for the period under review was estimated at 1.92 million tons from an area of 0.122 million hectares.
The increase in production was 3.9%, whereas the area decreased 5.4% over the last year, whereas tomato production during the season was estimated at 627.47 thousand tons from an area of 50.9 thousand hectares.
The production of the above-mentioned commodity increased by 3.9%, whereas the area decreased by 0.3% over the last year.
Meanwhile, potato production for 2023–24 was estimated at 8.1 million tons from an area of 0.3 million hectares. The increase in production was 27.9% over the target assigned by the last FCA.
The FCA held detailed deliberations over the production targets for essential Kharif crops in 2024–25 and decided to fix the production target of cotton at 10.8 million bales, whereas the 8.7 million-ton production target for rice is over 3.1 million hectares of land.
The maize target was fixed at 9.3 million tons of production over 1.5 million hectares of land.
The Committee also fixed the production target of sugarcane for 2024–25 at 76.7 million tons over an area of 1.3 million hectares.
The targets for other crops such as mung, mash, and chilies were also fixed in the meeting of the high-powered committee.
Pondering over the availability of agricultural inputs for Kharif crops (2024), the water availability in canals head will remain 63.61 million acres feet (MAF) as against last year, which was 61.85 MAF.
At present, all the provinces are getting satisfactory supplies in the system, it was informed.
The meteorological department informed us that during April to June 2024, normal to slightly above-normal precipitation is expected in most parts of the country, particularly in upper Punjab, during the season May to July 2024.
It was further informed that a tendency toward above-normal precipitation is likely to prevail in the months of August and September 2024.
Area-weighted normal rain fall in Pakistan during the monsoon season was 140.8 mm. It is also informed that sufficient water will be available for irrigation and power sectors.
The Director General of the of the Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department (FSC&RD) informed the house that seeds of rice, maize, sesame, and mung bean will remain available as per requirement.
The representative from the State Bank of Pakistan informed me that allocations of institutional credit for agriculture had substantially increased to Rs. 2,250 billion for 2023–24.
The disbursement up to February 2023 was Rs. 1,073.5 billion, which was 59% of the overall annual target of Rs 1819 billion, which was 28.5% higher than the disbursement of Rs 835.3 billion made during last year.
The FCA directed the relevant departments to remain vigilant to balance the supply and demand situation of fertilizer for a quick decision to make imports to meet domestic requirements during the coming kharif season.
The committee expressed satisfaction over the food security situation in the country, however, and emphasized the need for research and development as well as better coordination to consolidate the gains and ensure further progress in the sector.
Addressing the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain stressed the need to enhance domestic agricultural production through increased productivity per acre.
“While the availability of food commodities in the country is generally satisfactory, affordability remains a major issue for the poor segments of society,” he remarked.
Pakistan, he said, had immense production potential in the agriculture, livestock, and fisheries sectors, thus averting the challenge of hunger.
“However, for sustainable economic growth and prosperity, efficient utilization of production resources by adopting modern technologies, establishing realistic marketing systems, and minimizing trade barriers are of fundamental importance,” he added.
The minister said Pakistan was facing natural crises due to climate change, making the agriculture sector a priority for the government.
To stabilize the food security situation, the government was making efforts to assist farmers by providing inputs at affordable prices and ensuring better prices for their produce to bridge the gap between production costs and output prices in favor of farmers, he added.
Rana Tanveer said, “The government envisions enhancing agriculture-based economic growth to benefit the poor and promoting nutrition-sensitive practices to reduce various forms of malnutrition.”

Shipping activity at Port Qasim

KARACHI, Apr 25 (APP):Shipping activity was report at the port where nine ships namely, San Francisco, Atlantic Ibis, Marathapolis, MSC Sindy, Sea Pearl, Aisa Liberty, Hansa Oslo, Bateleur and Limra carrying Container, Fertilizer, Palm oil, Gas oil and LPG, berthed at Container Terminal, Grain Terminal, Liquid Terminal, Oil Terminal, Engro Terminal and Gas Terminal respectively during last.
       Meanwhile another ship ‘Haj Muhammad’ scheduled to load/offload Cement also arrived at outer-anchorage of the Port Qasim during the same period.
       A total of eleven ships were engaged at PQA berths during the last 24 hours, out of them three ships, Marathapolis, San Francisco and Lokojoleft the Port on today morning while three more ships, Atlantic Ibis, MSC Sindy and Seacon Yokohama are expected to sail on today.
       A cargo volume of 134,252 tonnes, comprising 85,307 tonnes imports cargo and 48,945 tonnes export cargo carried in 5,113 Containers (2,439 TEUs Imports and 2,674 TEUs export) was handled at the port during last 24 hours.
       There are 03 ships at Outer Anchorage of Port Qasim, out of them a bulk cargo carrier ‘Haj Muhammad’ & two more ships, SeaspanBeacin and SSL Brahamaputra scheduled to load/offload Cement and Container are expected to take berths at MW-1 and QICT on today 25thApril, while another Liquefied Natural Gas carrier ‘Doha’ is due arrive at Port Qasim on Friday.

Gold rates up by Rs500 per tola to Rs242,500

ISLAMABAD, Apr 25 (APP): The per tola price of 24 karat gold increased by Rs.500 and was sold at Rs.242,500 on Thursday compared to its sale at Rs. 242,000 on last trading day.

The price of 10 grams of 24 karat gold also increased by Rs.429 to Rs.207,905 from Rs. 207,476 whereas the prices of 10 gram 22 karat gold went up to Rs.190,580 from Rs. 190,186, the All Sindh Sarafa Jewellers Association reported.

The price of per tola and ten gram silver remained stagnant at Rs.2,650 and Rs.2,271.94 respectively.

The price of gold in the international market increased by $2 to $2,322 from $2,320, the association reported.

Renowned TV, stage actress, playwright, activist Madeeha Gohar remembered

ISLAMABAD, Apr 25 (APP):Renowned television and stage actress, playwright,director of social theater, and women’s rights activist Madeeha Gohar was remembered on the occasion of her death anniversary on Thursday.
Born on Sept 21, 1956, in Karachi, she was known for the art of dialogue delivery and changing facial expression in a beautiful style according to her character. Madeeha Gohar completed her MA in English literature from the Government College University, Lahore, and then studied master’s degree in Theatre Sciences from the University of London. She started her acting career in 1973 from PTV, and showcased her abilities in more than 100 Urdu and Punjabi dramas.
After the formation of Dramatic Club in 1983, many successful dramas were presented from the platform of Ajoka Theatre, including “Bulha”, “Dara”, “Koun Hai Yeh Gustakh”, “Toba Tek Singh”, “Hotel Mohenjodaro” and “Lo Phir Basant Aayee”.
The famous artiste also showed her talent as a director and gave a powerful message for social change, tolerance, and humanism besides addressing gender disparity in her dramas. Madeeha Gohar was honoured with numerous awards, including the Fatima Jinnah Award for her artistic services.
Madeeha Gohar fought against cancer in the last three years of her life and  passed away on April 25, 2018, at the age of 62 in Lahore.

Nutrition Int’l donates high-tech food lab to IFA for enhanced quality control

ISLAMABAD, Apr 25 (APP): The Nutrition International has gifted a CDR Food Lab machine to the Islamabad Food Authority (IFA), promising faster and more accurate food inspections in the Federal Capital.

Talking to APP, Deputy Director Operations (DDO) of Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) Tahira Saddique said that this high-tech equipment would allow the authority to check the quality of cooking oil and milk more effectively, ensuring safer food for the city’s residents.

She said that with the help of this machine IFA would overcome the big issue of rancid oil in the city and the department would be able to test oil on the spot through this mobile machine.

Nutrition International, a global organization focused on improving nutrition, made the donation during a ceremony in Islamabad.

The National Manager for Nutrition International, Zameer Haider, Director Food, Irfan Nawaz Memon along with key officials from the Food Authority were present on the occasion.

Tahira said that the new CDR Food Lab machine was a significant upgrade for the Food Authority’s inspection process.
It would allow for rapid testing of food products, helping the authority maintain strict quality standards. The machine’s precision in testing cooking oil and milk could help prevent substandard products from reaching the market, contributing
to public health and safety, she added.

She said that the Nutrition International was not just donating the equipment; they were also providing expert training for the Food Authority’s staff. This support would ensure that the team could operate the new technology efficiently and make the most of its capabilities. By sharing their expertise, Nutrition International aimed at to build a more robust food safety system in Islamabad.

On the occasion, Director Food Irfan Nawaz Memon expressed his gratitude to Nutrition International for the generous donation and their commitment to food safety. He highlighted the importance of this partnership in improving food quality in the city. The new equipment and training would enable the Food Authority to carry out inspections more quickly and accurately, reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses.

This partnership between Nutrition International and the Islamabad Food Authority was a positive move toward a safer food supply for everyone, she added.

Persian collection titled ‘Gulang-e-Arzoo’ on April 27

ISLAMABAD, Apr 25 (APP): Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) would organize an unveiling ceremony of Persian collection of Dr. Aslam Ansari titled ‘Gulbang-e-Arzoo’ on April 27.

The Academy has recently published “Gulbang-e Arzoo” in Persian by well knwon Urdu and Persian poet Dr. Aslam Ansari.
The launching ceremony of this book will be held at the Seminar Hall, Radio Pakistan, Multan, which will be presided over by Dr. Najiba Arif, Chairperson PAL.

Dr. Aslam Ansari will be the chief guest, while Dr. Arshad Mahmood Nashad will deliver the keynote address.
After the opening ceremony, Chairperson PAL and Director General PAL Sultan Nasir will also interact with the local scholars and writers.

Chairperson PAL Dr. Najiba Arif told APP that the initiative of holding book launching ceremony in Multan, was part of Academy decision to interact with scholars and writers of far-flung areas, aiming to recognize and appreciate their literary work.

“By acknowledging their contributions, we can encourage them to continue writing valuable literary work and also bring their unique perspective and ideas to the forefront,” she added.

Meeting regarding drug use in educational institutions held at ANF Headquarters

RAWALPINDI, Apr 25 (APP):A meeting regarding drug use in educational institutions was held here at Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) Headquarters which was chaired by Director General (DG) ANF, Maj Gen, Abdul Moeed, HI (M).
Senior officers of the federal and provincial ministries of education and regulatory institutions participated in the meeting.
All the stakeholders agreed on launching a national level campaign to tackle the drug menace.
In the meeting, the recommendations of the Higher Education Commission were also discussed for the effective implementation of the Tobacco Policy 2021.
DG ANF assured all possible cooperation to all the institutions for the success of the campaign.
