5-member bike-lifter gang busted

SARGODHA, Apr 24 (APP):The Bhagtanwala police on Wednesday arrested the ring leader of a notorious bike-lifter gang, identified as Mumtaz, along with his four gang members including Nadeem and Rehman.
The police also recovered 13 motorcycles, five pistols, eight rifles, 237 bullets and other valuables.
The arrested gang was wanted by the police in more than 25 cases.

Soyabean, palm oil imports grew 53.07%, 28.55% in 09 months

ISLAMABAD, Apr 24 (APP): Edible oil imports including soyabean and palm into the country during the first three quarters of the current financial year increased by 53.07 per cent and 28.55 per cent respectively as compared to the imports of the corresponding period of the last year.

During the period under review, about 200,191 metric tons of tea worth $495.217 million were imported in order to fulfil the local requirements as compared to the imports of 177,553 metric tons valued at $434.938 million of the same period of last year.

During the period from July-March 2023-24, the country spent $2.084 billion on the import of about 2.263 million metric tons of palm oil as compared to the imports of 2.381 million metric tons valued at $2.197 billion of the same period of last year.

Meanwhile, 107,705 metric tons of soyaban oil worth $116.069 million were imported as compared to the imports of 173.020 metric tons valued at 247.302 million, according to the data of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

During the first three-quarters of the current financial year, the food group exports from the country grew by 48.17 per cent as food commodities worth $5.651 billion were exported as compared to the exports of $3.814 billion in the same period of the last year.

On month on month basis, the food group exports from the country grew by 16.35 per cent in month of March 2024 as compared to the exports of the same month of last year.

In March 2024 food commodities valued at 685.025 million were exported as compared to the exports of $588.759 million of the same month of last year.

On the other hand food group imports into the country during the period under review went down by 14.23 per cent as food imports came down from $7.333 billion in the first three quarters of the last financial year as compared to the $6.290billion in the first 09 months of the current financial year.

China-Pakistan Investment and Trade Symposium held in Qingdao

BEIJING, Apr. 24 (APP): China-Pakistan Investment and Trade Symposium was held in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China, aiming to attract Chinese enterprises to invest in Pakistan.

Pakistan Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi said that the economic relationship between Pakistan and China has been gaining momentum with the latest developments such as the conclusion of several agriculture market access protocols.

“We have decided to take steps to enhance cooperation through institutional development and B2B exchanges to promote trade and investment”, he added.

Ghulam Qadir, Commercial Counsellor at Pakistani Embassy in Beijing introduced the policies and invited Chinese investors to invest in Pakistan, China Economic Net (CEN) reported on Wednesday.

“From January-March of 2024, Shandong Province’s import from Pakistan crossed $36.25 million. In the same period, Pakistan’s exports to China crossed $704.40 million”, he added.

 Lin Changhua, Deputy Director, SCODA (China-SCO Local Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Area), Wang Lanyou, CCPIT (China Council for the Promotion of International Trade) Qingdao, and Wang Zihai, Director of Pakistan China Center also encouraged investors to invest in Pakistan and highlighted the role of Qingdao City in enhancing economic integration of SCO countries.

Envoy visits Netherlands’ DRU Industrial Park to explore avenues for cooperation

E&T Deptt checked 2895 vehicles, removed 1066 tinted glasses in ICT

ISLAMABAD, Apr 24 (APP): In a crackdown against vehicles with tinted windows and unauthorized/fancy number plates, the Excise and Taxation (E&T) Department in the Federal Capital has intensified its operations.

In the past month alone, 2895 vehicles were inspected, resulting in the removal of 1066 tinted glasses and 800 fancy number plates.

Talking to APP, Spokesman of Islamabad Capital Territory Administration, Dr Abdullah Tabassum said that on the instructions from the Deputy Commissioner Islamabad, Irfan Nawaz Memon, the E&T department’s officers have
been conducting daily inspections to ensure compliance with vehicle regulations.

During the last month, he revealed that these inspections have been intensified and checked nearly 3,000 vehicles, leading to the removal of over 1,000 sets of coloured glass and 800 illegal number plates. Additionally, the registration
of 183 vehicles has been suspended, with many others receiving warnings.

The inspections were carried out by teams of Assistant Commissioners, officers from the Excise and Taxation Department, and Assistant Excise & Taxation Officers (AETOs). Vehicles with tinted windows or fancy number plates were subject to penalties, including suspension of registration. Owners of these vehicles must correct the violations to have their registration restored.

On the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner urged the public to avoid using unauthorized car accessories. This includes removing full-color tinted windows and fancy number plates, and replacing them with ones approved by the Excise and Taxation Department.

Dr Abdullah said that this crackdown served as a reminder to all vehicle owners in Islamabad to adhere to the rules. It’s a clear message that authorities are committed to maintaining safety and order on the roads.

Students of Women University visits SRSO’s enterprise development initiatives

SUKKUR, Apr 24 (APP):Students from the Department of Bio-Technology and Chemistry, the Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University Sukkur led by Dr Saifullah, visited Sindh Rural Support Organisation’s supported enterprise development initiatives of rural women here on Wednesday.
This visit was a follow up to previous meetings with the community regarding quality assurance, cost-effectiveness, and market analysis for their soap production unit supported by UN Women Pakistan in Village Loung Bhatti.
On the occasion, students interacted with the community and observed the soap making process firsthand. The community shared their challenges related to packaging and marketing.
The team also conducted a meeting with the community of the village Arbab Mirbahar Union Counci Ali Wahan. Discussions focused on exploring new small business ideas under the PPRP- EDF component funded by Sindh Government.
The community expressed interest in producing Whiper and Mob (potentially cleaning products). Based on the community’s interest, the BNBWU team will conduct a feasibility study including research, surveys, and market analysis to develop a proposal for the Arbab Mirbahar community.
This proposal will clearly outline how Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University will assist the community in marketing their chosen products.

Playback singer Ahmed Rushdi remembered

ISLAMABAD, Apr 24 (APP):Renowned playback singer Ahmed Rushdi, who mesmerized audiences with his beautiful songs was remembered on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Wednesday.
Born on April 24, 1934, in Hyderabad, he was considered the first pop singer of Pakistan.  He started his career by singing in Radio Pakistan Karachi’s programme “Bachon Ki Dunya.” He recorded his first song for the film “Anokhi” and went on to achieve fame with a song filmed by actor Alauddin.
Ahmed Rushdi lent his voice to films made in the 70s and 80s and won the Nigar Award for three consecutive years for his work in the films “Spiran,” “Mehtab,” and “Aanchal.”
He was also awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in addition to the Artist and Millennium Awards.
His voice had a profound impact on the chocolate hero Waheed Murad, who was one of the most popular actors of his time. April 11, 1983 at the age of 49, leaving behind a legacy of music that continues to be cherished by his fans.

Pakistan, Iran agree on swift FTA finalisation, target $10 b trade over five years

ISLAMABAD, Apr 24 (APP): Pakistan and Iran agreed to expeditiously finalize the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and boost their bilateral trade to USD10 billion over the next five years through joint economic projects, setting up of joint border markets, economic free zones, and new border openings.

The bilateral ties and cooperations were discussed during the delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iran’s President Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi who was on an official visit to Pakistan from April 22-24, accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian, as well as other members of the cabinet and senior officials.

Agreeing to turn the common border from a ‘border of peace’ to a ‘border of prosperity’, both countries reiterated the importance of cooperation in the energy domain, including trade in electricity, power transmission lines and Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project, according to a joint statement issued by Foreign Office on the culmination of Raisi’s visit on Wednesday.

Both sides underscored the imperative of a long-term durable economic partnership and collaborative regional economic and connectivity model, particularly for socio-economic development in Iran’s Sistan-Balochistan and Pakistan’s Balochistan provinces.

The two sides reviewed the entire spectrum of Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations, exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual concern, and signed multiple accords.

Pakistan and Iran reiterated their commitment and dedication to further strengthening the bilateral fraternal relations by promoting academic, cultural and tourism activities, and enhancing tourism to historic religious sites.

Both leaders reiterated the importance of forging regular cooperation and exchange of views between political, military and security officials of the two countries to combat threats such as terrorism, narcotics smuggling, human trafficking, hostage-taking, money-laundering and abduction.

For swift finalization of FTA, both sides agreed to hold the next sessions of Annual Bilateral Political Consultations (BPC) and Joint Business Trade Committee (JBTC) as well as the 22nd round of the negotiations of the Joint Economic Commission (JEC) soon.

They also agreed to facilitate the regular exchange of economic and technical experts, as well as delegations from chambers of commerce from both countries to intensify economic cooperation. The declaration of ‘Reemdan border point’ as an international border crossing point under TIR and opening of the remaining two border sustenance markets was also agreed upon.

There was consensus to fully operationalize barter trade mechanisms between the two sides to facilitate economic and commercial activity, particularly under ongoing collaborative endeavours, such as border sustenance markets.

Regarding connectivity, two sides expressed satisfaction over the regular shipment of goods under the TIR Convention and agreed to fully operationalize the Convention for further efficient, speedy and barrier-free trade.

As members of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), the two countries expressed firm resolve to enhance cooperation in connectivity, infrastructure development and energy sectors and agreed to expand linkages between Gwadar and Chahbahar ports.

The two countries condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and agreed to adopt a collaborative approach to confront this menace and to leverage the existing bilateral institutional mechanisms to effectively combat and counter this threat, while fully upholding the principles of the UN Charter, particularly the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states.

Taking note of developments at regional and global levels, both sides stressed the importance of peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy to find mutually acceptable solutions to common challenges.

The two leaders highlighted the need to resolve the issue of Kashmir through dialogue and peaceful means based on the will of the people of that region, and in accordance with international law.

They expressed their strong and unequivocal condemnation of the ongoing Israeli regime’s aggression and atrocities against the Palestinian people, and called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access to the besieged people of Gaza, return of the displaced Palestinians, as well as ensuring accountability of the crimes being committed by the Israeli regime.

Both sides expressed satisfaction over close bilateral ties in all mechanisms of SCO and underscored the importance of early resumption of the activities of the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group to coordinate efforts to maintain stability and develop economic ties in the region. They also called for active cooperation among the regional countries within the framework of ECO.

Pakistan and Iran reaffirmed their commitment to the development of Afghanistan as a peaceful, united, sovereign and independent state, free from the threats of terrorism and drug trafficking. Noting that the existence of terrorist organizations in Afghanistan posed a serious threat to regional and global security, the two sides reaffirmed their willingness to enhance cooperation on counter-terrorism and security and to develop a united front against terrorism.

President Raisi also met President Asif Ali Zardari, Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.

The two sides expressed their agreement to release each others’ prisoners and take measures for their extradition based on the Treaty for the Extradition of Criminals and the Accused between Iran And Pakistan approved by the two countries in 1960 and the Agreement on the Transfer of Convicts between the two countries approved in 2016.

Both sides strongly condemned the attack on the Consular Section of the Iranian Embassy in Damascus and called it a violation of international law and the UN Charter, as well as illegal under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.

Two leaders called on the UN Security Council to prevent the Israel regime from its adventurism in the region and its illegal acts attacking its neighbours and targeting foreign diplomatic facilities.

Pakistan and Iran condemned rising incidents of Islamophobia, desecration of the Holy Quran and sacred symbols in some countries, and welcomed the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution 78/264 titled “Measures to Combat Islamophobia” in this regard and called for an early appointment of a United Nations Special Envoy to combat Islamophobia.

Prime Minister Shehbaz and President Raisi welcomed all dimensions of the cooperation between the two countries in multilateral fora including the UN, ECO, SCO, OIC, D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), initiatives of the Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan’s Neighboring Countries and others.

They also expressed their agreement to start negotiations on free trade in ECO.

President Raisi paid homage to Allama Muhammad Iqbal as he visited Allama Iqbal Mausoleum in Lahore. In Karachi, he attended a wreath-laying ceremony at Mazar-e-Quaid.

He also addressed a widely attended meeting of business people from both sides in Karachi.

President Raisi also extended invitations to the president and the prime minister of Pakistan to pay official visits to Iran.
