Yousaf suspends Ruet-e-Hilal Committee's membership of Mufti Qavi

ISLAMABAD, June 22 (APP): Minister for Religious Affairs and
Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad Yousaf Wednesday suspended the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s membership of Mufti Abdul Qavi.

According to a notification issued by the ministry, Mufti Qavi’s membership has been suspended immediately. He has been barred to attend the next meeting of Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee for Eid-ul-Fitr moon sighting.

The ‘selfie issue’ has been referred to Ulema and Mashaikh Council for further probe, it added.

The selfie of Mufti Abdul Qavi with model Qandeel Baloch invited controversy and Mufti was severely criticised by the media.

The issue was echoed in Tuesday’s meeting of Senate Standing
Committee on Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, and
committee’s chairman Senator Hafiz Hamdullah directed the ministry to avoid appointing such persons as members of Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

The committee also directed the ministry to devise a criteria of appointing the members of Ruet-e-Hilal Committee besides fixing
tenures of its chairman and members.
