ISLAMABAD, Feb 06 (APP): The Department of Archaeology and Museums (DoAM) has clarified that the World War I (WWI) Monument located in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) is not currently a protected monument under the Antiquities Act, 1975, as it falls under the administrative control of the Capital Development Authority (CDA).
According to the department, while formal advice was issued to bring the monument under legal protection, the process could not be completed due to the non-provision of required revenue records and other legal prerequisites necessary for notification as a protected site.
Despite its current legal status, the department emphasized that the WWI Monument holds significant cultural and historical value.
In line with internationally recognized conservation practices for commemorative and heritage structures, advisory guidance was provided to the CDA, urging the submission of relevant documentation to facilitate its inclusion under formal protection.
The department further stressed that any handling, relocation, or intervention concerning the monument must be carried out with due care, dignity, and conservation sensitivity to preserve its historical importance.
In its clarification, the Department of Archaeology and Museums also called upon the concerned authorities to restore, preserve, and re-erect the WWI Monument at the same location and within the same area, ensuring that its dignity, prestige, and historical honor are fully maintained.
The department reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Pakistan’s cultural heritage and urged inter-departmental cooperation to ensure the long-term protection of historically significant sites and memorials across the country.
