ISLAMABAD, Dec 10 (APP):Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President and Senator Sherry Rehman, in her message on International Human Rights Day, said that this year’s global theme focuses on ending digital violence against women and girls.
She stated that violence against women—whether online or offline—remains a growing and serious issue. “Technology-enabled gender-based violence has now become a widespread part of the digital age,” she added, noting that Pakistan received 3,171 complaints related to such abuses last year.
According to Rehman, the highest number of cases, 186, were reported in May alone, while 2,741 incidents of cyber harassment were officially recorded. She pointed out that 36% of these complaints emerged from areas where the FIA Cyber Crime Wing is operational. “Ninety percent of harassment complaints received by the FIA were filed by women,” she said.
Rehman further highlighted alarming global trends, stating that 85% of women worldwide experienced online harassment in 2024.
“These figures are not just numbers; they represent real stories of women whose education, employment and everyday lives are disrupted,” she emphasized.
