UN Envoy briefed on efforts to bring peace in Afghanistan
ISLAMABAD, Aug 4 (APP): National Security Advisor (NSA) Lt. General (Retd) Nasser Khan Janjua on Thursday briefed UN Special Representative on the efforts being made by Pakistan to bring peace in Afghanistan.

Special Representative of the Secretary General for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto called on National Security Adviser Lt. Gen (Retd) Nasser Khan Janjua.

Welcoming the UN Special Representative to his new assignment, the NSA stated peace in Afghanistan was vital for Pakistan, a press release issued here stated.

He explained in detail the efforts Pakistan had made and continued to make to bring peace in Afghanistan.

He said that it was to a serious disappointment that anti-Pakistan rhetoric emanating from Kabul was on the rise.

Remaining steadfast, sincere and committed, Pakistan is convinced that politically negotiated settlement through an Afghan-led and Afghan owned peace process remained the only option for a peaceful Afghanistan, he said.

The reconciliation is between Afghan Government and Taliban. The two must come to terms with each other to bring lasting peace in Afghanistan, while like all others, Pakistan is only a facilitator, he reiterated.

Mr. Tadamichi Yamamoto appreciated Pakistan’s efforts for peace in Afghanistan and acknowledged the sacrifices of the people of Pakistan in war against terrorism.

He agreed that a political solution was a key to lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan.
