ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (APP):United Nation’s Secretary-General António Guterres called on the global community to reaffirm its commitment to peace, cooperation, and collective problem-solving in the face of mounting global crises, on the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
In his message for United Nations Day, Guterres invoked the opening words of the UN Charter — “We the peoples of the United Nations” — describing them as more than a founding phrase, but as the very definition of the organization’s identity and purpose.
“The United Nations is more than an institution. It is a living promise — spanning borders, bridging continents, inspiring generations,” he said.
Reflecting on eight decades of the UN’s efforts to promote peace, fight poverty and hunger, advance human rights, and foster sustainability, the Secretary-General emphasized that today’s world stands at a defining moment.
“As we look ahead, we confront challenges of staggering scale: escalating conflicts, climate chaos, runaway technologies, and threats to the very fabric of our institution,” Guterres warned.
He urged world leaders and citizens alike to reject timidity and isolationism, stressing that the problems facing humanity are too vast for any single nation to solve alone.
“This is no time for timidity or retreat,” he said. “Now, more than ever, the world must recommit to solving problems no nation can solve alone.”
Concluding his message, Guterres appealed for unity and renewed purpose.
“On this UN Day, let’s stand together and fulfil the extraordinary promise of your United Nations,” he said. “Let’s show the world what is possible when ‘we the peoples’ choose to act as one.”
United Nations Day is observed every year on October 24 to mark the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945, symbolizing the birth of the global organization dedicated to peace, development, and human rights.
