UN, an ideal forum to galvanize global action on key priorities: President

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (APP): President Mamnoon Hussain Saturday said that the United Nations was an ideal forum to galvanize global action on key priorities ranging from human rights to development and climate change.
In his message on the occasion of United Nations Day commemorated on October 24, the President said that Pakistan joined the international community in celebrating the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
“This is an occasion to reaffirm our belief in multilateralism
and the United Nations as the best means to address the global challenges of today. This conviction is manifested in Pakistan’s strong record of contribution to and engagement with the United Nations,” he added.
He said the United Nations had a key role in promoting pacific settlement of disputes and upholding the right to self-determination of peoples under alien domination and foreign occupation.
He said Pakistan believed that a just and lasting resolution
of Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations was essential for durable peace and development in the region.
As a leading troop contributor to UN Peacekeeping over the
decades, the President said Pakistan had made substantive
contribution to the United Nations’ efforts in carrying out its
primary responsibility for maintenance of international peace
and security.
“Over 150,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have served with
distinction and professionalism in some of the most challenging conditions, to help maintain and build peace and restore hopes of millions affected by conflict around the world. 142 Pakistani blue helmets have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving under the UN flag,” the President remarked.
He said the recent adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals held great significance in advancing the well-being and prosperity of billions of people around the world.
President Mamnoon said this was an occasion to reaffirm our
abiding commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.
He said the international community should work together to
realize the noble objectives of the United Nations and further
strengthen this world body to make it even more effective.
Pakistan would always be in the forefront of this endeavour, he added.
