ISLAMABAD, Jun 7 (APP):Summer camps have increasingly become a topic of debate among parents and educators, with some viewing them as a valuable source of learning, recreation, and healthy engagement for children during summer vacations, while others raise concerns over commercialization and question whether certain camps operate more as profit-driven setups than meaningful developmental spaces.
With the onset of summer vacations, digital platforms have seen a surge in advertisements for summer camps, promoting a wide range of activities designed to engage and keep children productively occupied during the holiday
period.
Parents and education experts remain divided over the growing trend of summer camps, with some viewing them as useful for skill-building and social development, while others question their educational value and rising
commercialization.
A WhatsApp group of mothers recently discussed and shared their views regarding summer camps, expressing mixed opinions about where children are being enrolled during the vacation period.
While some parents said these camps provide structured activities and keep children engaged in a productive routine, others raised concerns about the increasing number of such programs and the pressure it places on families to participate.
Several mothers also criticized the high fee structures of some summer camps, questioning whether the charges truly reflect the quality of learning and activities being offered.
They further debated the real purpose of these camps, with some arguing that they are becoming more commercial in nature rather than focusing on genuine child development and meaningful skill-building.
An instructor at a well-known summer camp in Islamabad/Rawalpindi said the program is designed to provide children with skill-based learning and structured activities during the vacation period, adding that it also supports working parents, especially mothers, who rely on such initiatives to keep their children productively engaged.
He said the camp offers a variety of courses including basic artificial intelligence learning, gymnastics arts and crafts, cooking and swimming, aimed at developing both creative and physical skills among children.
A group of students also shared mixed opinions about summer camps, with some expressing satisfaction and saying the programs help them learn new skills, stay active and make productive use of their vacation time.
They said activities such as communication skills, arts, sports and other training sessions make the break more engaging and enjoyable.
However, others said they felt summer camps were more like routine time-fillers, arguing that not all activities are equally useful or educational. They added that while some sessions are interesting, the overall experience depends on the quality of instruction and the structure of the program.
Experts and educationists also said summer camps can support children’s learning, but they should not replace parental involvement in upbringing.
They stressed that character building begins at home, while also noting that busy routines are leading some parents to depend heavily on external programs for child development, which may reduce personal guidance and family time.
In conclusion, summer camps are increasingly being viewed as a platform for children’s engagement, learning, and skill development during school vacations. However, questions continue to emerge regarding their growing commercialisation, varying quality standards, and overall impact on child development.
Experts emphasize that such programs should serve as a supporting mechanism rather than a substitute for parental involvement.
They stress that the foundation of a child’s upbringing, moral values and character building is primarily laid at home through consistent guidance and attention.
Ultimately, summer camps can be beneficial only when they complement parental upbringing and remain firmly aligned with the broader purpose of balanced and meaningful child development.
