Students' access to latest technologies indispensable to leap forward; Baligh-ur-Rehman

ISLAMABAD, June 22 (APP): Minister of State for Education,
Training and Standards in Higher Education, Engineer Muhammad
Baligh-ur-Rehman on Wednesday said students’ access to latest
technologies is imperative to move forward in their educational
pursuits.

The minister was speaking at a ceremony held at Pakistan
Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) to distribute
231 laptops among the students of MS and PhD programmes.

He said that it is due to the dedicated efforts of institutions like PIEAS which have placed Pakistan at the top in engineering and science among the Islamic countries.

“We are proud of being the nuclear power and this could not
have become possible without the commitment of engineers and
scientists trained in institutions like PIEAS”, Baligh said.

Studies show that the laptop distribution among the students narrows the digital divide and access to computer by students helps them to leap forward.

The Minister said that the other countries are also following the same pursuit of distribution of laptops among students for better studies and research.

He added that the government strictly follows the merit in the distribution of laptops among university students.

To continue the journey towards scientific and technological
proficiency, he said, Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme was initiated by the government under the able leadership of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for young and bright students of public sector
higher education institutions.

This programme encourages bright students to pursue further
research and academic work in their respective fields.

Earlier, Rector PIEAS, Dr. Muhammad Aslam told the audience
that PIEAS acquired degree awarding status in year 2000 and within
a short period of six years it was ranked as top Engineering
Institution of Pakistan by the Higher Education Commission (HEC)
surpassing the well-known engineering universities of the country.

He appreciated the support of government through Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) to PIEAS in achieving its set targets.

He praised his faculty as PIEAS consistently retained this prestigious position in the subsequent HEC rankings held in 2010 and 2013.

PIEAS has been declared as top ranked university of Pakistan
by QS Rankings Asia 2014 and 2015.

Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS)
is a top ranking engineering university working under the aegis of
PAEC, has 143 regular full time faculty members.

One hundred of which have acquired Ph.D degrees from reputed
