Shortage of over 10m houses poses serious challenge: Riaz Pirzada

ISLAMABAD, Oct 30 (APP): Federal Minister for Housing and Works Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada has said that the government was committed to addressing Pakistan’s growing housing crisis through sustainable development, modern policies and the promotion of public-private partnerships. He stated that the shortage of more than ten million housing units in the country posed a serious challenge, the solution to which lied in integrated policy making, expansion of housing finance and comprehensive planning.

According to the spokesperson, the federal minister expressed these views while inaugurating the three-day international building and construction industry exhibition and conference “Build Pakistan 2025 – Let’s Build Together” at the Lahore Expo Centre on Thursday.

The event has been jointly organized by Ministry of Housing and Works and Fakt Exhibitions Pvt. Ltd. with an aim to bring together public and private sector leaders, innovators, and policymakers in the building and construction industry to address the future of sustainable housing, urban development, and smart construction in Pakistan.

During the inaugural ceremony, the federal minister formally inaugurated the event by cutting the ribbon and visited various stalls, where he interacted with stakeholders presenting modern construction technologies, sustainable materials, and low-cost housing solutions.

In his address, Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada said that the government was taking concrete steps to promote housing finance, enhance partnership opportunities, and formulate inclusive policies in line with public needs.

Highlighting the key features of the National Housing Policy 2025, he stated that the policy identified housing finance reforms, energy-efficient design and inter-sectoral coordination were the fundamental pillars of development.

Prominent figures who attended the event included the CEO of Fakt Exhibitions, Saleem Khan Tanoli; former Federal Secretary for Housing and former Director General of Walled City Lahore Authority, Kamran Lashari; Nadeem Khurshid, Urban Development Specialist and Prof. Dr. Safeer Awan, Pro Rector of NUML University.

On the first day of the conference, experts in urban planning and the construction sector participated in panel discussions on topics such as sustainable urban development, smart green construction, and socio-spatial harmony. The experts presented recommendations on the effective use of technology, green infrastructure, and sustainable investment in the housing and construction sectors.

The federal minister invited investors, developers, financial institutions, technology experts and academics to join hands in developing sustainable and practical solutions in line with the government’s vision. He said that the “Build Pakistan 2025” platform offered an excellent opportunity for knowledge exchange, technological advancement and the promotion of partnerships.

The three-day exhibition and conference will continue until November 1, featuring technical sessions, networking opportunities and activities related to the construction industry.
