Scholars discuss Islamic political thought at AIOU seminar

ISLAMABAD, Jun 29 (APP): The Majlis-e-Fikr-o-Adab of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in collaboration with the Cultural Consulate of the Islamic Republic of Iran organized a scholarly seminar titled “The Philosophy of Politics in Islam” followed by the launch of the Urdu translation of a book on the same subject.
The event was chaired by Prof. Dr Shah Mohyuddin Hashmi, Dean Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies while Majid Meshki, Cultural Counsellor of the Islamic Republic of Iran attended as the chief guest. Prominent scholar Khurshid Nadeem, Iqbal scholar Dr Muhammad Arif, Dr Muhammad Hasnain Nadir, and other academics participated in the seminar. The proceedings were moderated by Dr Tahir Islam Askari.
Speakers explored various dimensions of Islamic political thought, emphasizing that the Islamic philosophy of governance is rooted in the principles of justice, trust, consultation (Shura), human rights and public welfare.
They noted that these values provide the foundation for building a balanced and equitable society.
In his presidential address, Prof. Dr Shah Mohyuddin Hashmi said that Iran has developed a distinctive intellectual and political model regarding Islamic political philosophy while Pakistan’s Constitution also represents an important example of Islamic Ijtihad, recognizing the sovereignty of Almighty Allah.
He stressed that scholarly dialogue on the subject is a pressing need in the contemporary world.
The second session featured the launch of the Urdu translation of the book “The Philosophy of Politics in Islam,” translated by Dr Muhammad Hasnain Nadir.
He highlighted the book’s significance, explaining that it serves as an important academic resource for understanding Islamic political thought and concepts of governance.
Addressing the ceremony, Khurshid Nadeem described the publication as a valuable academic and intellectual contribution.
He noted that the book is taught in Iranian universities and reflects Iran’s political and ideological approach to governance.
He compared its role to that of Pakistan Studies textbooks in Pakistan, as it explains the intellectual foundations of the Iranian state.
He also congratulated Dr. Hasnain Nadir on his lucid and scholarly Urdu translation.
Chief Guest Majid Meshki said that the State of Madinah remains the practical and historical model of Islamic political philosophy.
He observed that the book presents various dimensions of Islamic and Shia political thought and governance from an academic perspective.
He expressed hope that the Majlis-e-Fikr-o-Adab at AIOU would continue to strengthen academic and intellectual cooperation between Pakistan and Iran.
The speakers concluded that although Sunni and Shia schools of thought may differ on certain aspects of Islamic political systems, they share broad agreement on core Islamic principles such as justice, trustworthiness, human dignity, and public welfare.
They emphasized that contemporary political and social challenges require a deeper scholarly understanding of Islamic teachings in the modern context.
