SC upholds death sentence of man convicted of killing wife and in-laws

ISLAMABAD, Mar 31 (APP):The Supreme Court of Pakistan has upheld the death sentence of a man convicted of murdering his wife, mother-in-law, and aunt-in-law, dismissing his appeal.
The case was heard by a bench headed by Justice Hashim Khan Kakar. During the proceedings, the prosecutor argued that there was strong evidence against the accused, Sultan Ahmed, including testimonies from witnesses who sold petrol and a lighter to him and later identified him.
According to the prosecution, the accused set his wife, mother-in-law, and aunt-in-law on fire in 2022 in Rahim Yar Khan over a personal dispute, resulting in their deaths.
The defense counsel contended that the women were accidentally burned while cooking, but the court rejected this argument.
During the hearing, Justice Kakar remarked that there was no justification for killing one’s wife, noting that divorce was always an option.
He expressed concern over the rising trend of such incidents in society, where individuals resort to killing their spouses. Referring to another case, he observed that two accused had killed the wives of their rival.
After reviewing the evidence, the court dismissed the appeal and upheld the death sentence awarded to the convict.
