ISLAMABAD, Mar 20 (APP):The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Sindh government to accelerate the inspection of chengchi rickshaws in the province.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed heard the contempt of court case filed by All Pakistan Chingchi Rickshaw Union.
During the course of proceedings, the Additional Advocate General Sindh said the provincial government had already submitted its report on court orders.
He said the government had registered 208 rickshaws so far. Atif Raza President Rickshaw Union said the government was not providing them route permits.
He said the provincial government did not have technical experts for rickshaws inspection.
He pleaded the court to sought rickshaws inspection report from the Sindh government.
He said that all approvals were given on one name.
The Additional Advocate General Sindh said motorcycle rickshaws cannot be allowed to operate in the province.
Justice Azmat Saeed asked how many rickshaws were inspected.
The Secretary Transport Sindh said around two lac rickshaws were running in the province.
He said only 285 rickshaw drivers contacted the department for inspection and registration.
He said police was also taking action against rickshaws that were not up to the standard.
The DIG Traffic Sindh said the traffic police had captured 2500 rickshaws.
Later hearing of the case was adjourned for one month.
