ISLAMABAD, Nov 25 (APP):On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman delivered a powerful statement, calling on the nation to unite against gender-based violence and pledging her party’s unwavering commitment to women’s rights.
Rehman emphasized that “violence against women is not just an individual problem, but a profound social issue that undermines the basic principles of justice and equality.” She reiterated the PPP’s clear and consistent position in favour of protecting women’s rights and building a safe, equitable society.
She highlighted various forms of gender-based violence in Pakistan, including domestic abuse, harassment, forced marriages, and human trafficking.
Senator Rehman also reminded the public of the PPP’s legislative efforts: she has previously presented the first bill against domestic violence in 2004, and the Senate approved the Child Marriage Restraint Bill. She noted that the passage of the Anti-Honour Killings (Criminal Law Amendment) Act and the Protection Against Harassment at the Workplace Act stand as significant milestones in the party’s fight for women’s protection.
She stressed that the journey is far from over. Rehman urged Pakistanis to challenge entrenched social norms that normalize violence, and called on the nation to raise a united voice in opposition. “On this day, I appeal to all Pakistanis to stand together against violence on women. PPP will continue its struggle against all forms of violence,” she declared.
