Rana Mashhood chairs first meeting on youth employment policy
ISLAMABAD, Aug 27 (APP): Chairman Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan on Thursday chaired the first meeting of the National Coordination Committee on National Youth Employment Policy (NYEP) at the Prime Minister’s Office.
During the meeting, senior federal and provincial officials, public sector institutions, academia and development partners reviewed the policy’s implementation plan and coordination mechanism to expand employment and economic opportunities for Pakistan’s youth.
The meeting focused on defining responsibilities, strengthening inter provincial coordination and establishing an effective monitoring framework to ensure timely and result oriented implementation of the policy.
The NYEP is aimed at creating sustainable employment opportunities by aligning youth skills with market demand and high growth sectors.
The policy targets 100 per cent absorption of new labour force entrants by 2030, an increase in female labour force participation to 35 per cent, and addresses the challenge of 32.4 million young people not in employment, education or training (NEET).
It identifies 10 priority sectors, including information technology, e commerce, agriculture, construction, health, logistics and overseas employment, as key areas for generating jobs and improving youth participation in the economy.
Participants discussed a responsibility and monitoring matrix to clearly define the roles of relevant stakeholders and improve accountability in implementing the policy’s actions.
The committee also considered proposals to strengthen collaboration among government institutions, the private sector, academia, skills development organisations and development partners.
Representatives shared recommendations on areas requiring greater coordination, institutional support and resources.
The proposed monitoring and coordination mechanism was discussed to facilitate regular follow up and cooperation between federal and provincial stakeholders.
Representatives from the Ministries of Finance; Industries and Production; National Food Security and Research; Federal Education and Professional Training; Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development; Commerce; and Information Technology and Telecommunication attended the meeting.
Officials from the Planning Commission, Board of Investment, Higher Education Commission, State Bank of Pakistan, National Vocational and Technical Training Commission, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority, Technology for People Initiative, LUMS, GIZ and provincial Youth Affairs Departments also participated.
Rana Mashhood stressed the need for whole of government coordination, clear accountability and result oriented implementation of the policy.
He emphasised stronger linkages among government, industry, academia and other stakeholders to ensure that young people benefit from better employment, skills development and entrepreneurship opportunities.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthen institutional coordination and accelerate implementation of the National Youth Employment Policy to promote economic empowerment and greater participation of Pakistan’s youth.
