Rainwater drainage operation launched in Islamabad after downpour

ISLAMABAD, Sep 01 (APP):CDA Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Sohail Ashraf on Tuesday inspected several parts of the capital following heavy rain and reviewed arrangements for drainage of rainwater.

Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon accompanied the CDA chairman during the visit, as officials assessed the situation in low-lying areas, underpasses, interchanges and major roads.

The chairman was briefed by field teams and relevant officials on measures being taken to drain accumulated rainwater and keep traffic flowing.

Special teams comprising officials from the CDA, Emergency and Disaster Management, Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) and district administration were deployed to deal with drainage-related issues, officials said.

Sohail Ashraf also visited Sector E-11 to assess the situation caused by the rain and directed the concerned authorities to ensure timely removal of accumulated water.

De-watering machinery was deployed at low-lying points and underpasses, while teams were also working to remove debris, garbage and other obstructions from drains and water channels.

The chairman directed the relevant officials to remain in the field and continuously monitor sensitive and low-lying areas, saying negligence or delay in dealing with drainage issues would not be tolerated.

The administration also advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and stay away from low-lying areas, underpasses and places where water had accumulated.

Citizens may contact the CDA and district administration on 16 and 1334 in case of emergencies, according to the administration.
