ISLAMABAD, Jan 19 (APP):Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi on Monday said that Phase-I of the Railway Advanced Infrastructure Network (RAIN) project will be completed by June 2026, marking a major milestone in the modernization of Pakistan Railways.
Chairing a key meeting on the project, the minister said the RAIN initiative represents a significant step toward transforming Pakistan Railways into a safe, efficient and passenger-centric organization.
He said RAIN as the largest digitization project in the history of Pakistan Railways, said a press release.
During the briefing, the Directorate of Information Technology gave a comprehensive presentation on the progress and implementation plan of the project.
Phase-I is being fully financed through Pakistan Railways’ own revenue, reflecting the organization’s growing financial self-reliance and operational sustainability.
The Directorate of IT informed the meeting that Phase-I of the RAIN project has now been successfully executed.
Its key components included the introduction of GPS tracking for all trains and locomotives, establishment of safe and smart railway stations at major stations—modeled on the Rawalpindi station—with plans to replicate the model at other important stations, provision of high-speed internet facilities at selected railway stations, and the establishment of Command and Control Centers at the Lahore headquarters as well as at all divisional offices.
The project also included fiberization of 1,700 kilometers of the ML-1 railway network, enabling real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making across the system.
The railways minister emphasized that the RAIN project would play a vital role in reducing train delays and accidents, improving passenger services and enhancing overall operational efficiency.
He said that the newly established command and control systems would ensure swift and effective responses during emergencies, further strengthening the safety and reliability of Pakistan Railways.
Hanif Abbasi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to leveraging modern technology to upgrade railway infrastructure and provide improved services to passengers across the country.
