ISLAMABAD, Jan 21 (APP):Pakistan Railways has recovered 2,552 acres of encroached land across its network over the past five years, the National Assembly was informed on Wednesday.
Parliamentary Secretary for Railways Muhammad Usman Awaisi told the House that Pakistan Railways owns a total of 168,858 acres of land, of which 12,468 acres, or 7.38 per cent, are under encroachment.
He said the Railways Administration had launched a comprehensive anti-encroachment drive in coordination with provincial governments to reclaim the land.
Inspectors general and chief secretaries of the provinces had been asked to provide full support, including the deployment of law enforcement personnel to maintain order during operations.
The parliamentary secretary said 308 key sites had been identified for commercial use in line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision to improve the utilisation of railway assets and generate revenue.
He noted that the removal of encroachments required close coordination with provincial administrations and local authorities.
With their support, he said, encroachments had already been reduced and further recoveries were expected in the coming years.
