ISLAMABAD, Jun 11 (APP):Ambassador of Portugal to Pakistan Paulo Guedes Domingues has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to further deepening bilateral cooperation with Pakistan, saying relations between the two countries are entering a particularly positive phase marked by increasing engagement and mutual goodwill.
In a message issued on the occasion of the Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities 2026, the ambassador said Portugal Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the country’s history, culture, language and values, while also recognizing the enduring bonds that unite Portuguese communities around the world.
Paying tribute to renowned Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, he said the literary icon’s work continues to embody Portugal’s spirit of openness, discovery and dialogue among cultures.
The ambassador also acknowledged the important contributions of Portuguese communities living abroad, describing them as ambassadors of Portuguese values and bridges between nations.
“Through their dedication, talent and commitment, they strengthen Portugal’s presence in the world and serve as valuable bridges between peoples and nations,” he said.
Referring to Pakistan, Ambassador Paulo Guedes Domingues noted that it was particularly meaningful to celebrate Portugal Day in a country with which Portugal enjoys friendly and constructive relations.
“Although separated by geography, our two nations share a rich history of contacts and exchanges, as well as a common commitment to dialogue, international cooperation and mutual respect,” he said.
Highlighting the growing people-to-people connections between the two countries, the envoy said a rising number of Portuguese citizens of Pakistani origin were making significant contributions to Portuguese society in diverse fields.
“Their presence reflects the close links that unite our countries and serves as a living bridge between Portugal and Pakistan, strengthening mutual understanding and friendship,” he added.
The ambassador said bilateral relations had continued to develop positively in recent years across various sectors, including political dialogue, trade and investment, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
“Our bilateral relationship is entering a particularly positive phase, marked by increasingly regular contacts and a shared commitment to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” he remarked.
He reiterated Portugal’s commitment to exploring new avenues of cooperation that would benefit both countries and their peoples.
Ambassador Paulo Guedes Domingues also appreciated the dedication and professionalism of the staff of the Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad for their efforts in promoting Portugal and strengthening bilateral ties.
He further acknowledged the services of Portugal’s Honorary Consuls in Pakistan, Fakir S. Ayazuddin in Karachi and Mr. Iftikhar Firoz in Lahore, for their role in fostering closer engagement with Pakistani institutions, businesses and citizens.
Expressing gratitude to the Pakistani authorities, diplomatic community, representatives of business, academic and cultural circles, members of the media and friends of Portugal, the ambassador said their support reflected the strong friendship between the two countries and a shared confidence in an even brighter future.
“As we celebrate Portugal today, we also celebrate the friendship between Portugal and Pakistan and the values that bring us together: respect, dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding,” he said.
The ambassador concluded his message by extending best wishes on Portugal’s National Day and reaffirming Portugal’s desire to further strengthen its partnership with Pakistan.
“Long live Portugal, and long live the friendship between Portugal and Pakistan,” he added.
