ISLAMABAD, Aug 30 (APP): The ENT Department of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) successfully performed five cochlear implant surgeries on deaf children, providing them with a chance to regain hearing and develop speech without any financial burden on their families.
The surgeries were carried out free of cost with financial support and sponsorship from IMRA. Professor Dr Altaf Hussain and Associate Professor Dr Jawad Faisal of the ENT Department appreciated the coordinated efforts of the departments involved and reaffirmed PIMS commitment to expanding cochlear implant services, particularly for children from underprivileged families who cannot afford the expensive procedure.
They said cochlear implantation could significantly improve the quality of life of children with severe hearing loss by enabling them to hear and, with subsequent rehabilitation, develop speech and communication skills.
The ENT Department also acknowledged the professional support extended by the Anesthesia Department, including Professor Dr Naheed Fatima, Dr Yasmin Afridi and Dr Abdullah.
The department also appreciated the cooperation of the Pediatric Surgery Department, particularly its Head, Associate Professor Dr Khurram Arif, for facilitating the procedures.
