ISLAMABAD, Aug 06 (APP): The Press Information Department (PID), in collaboration with MASRO, on Thursday organized a one-day capacity-building workshop for media professionals aimed at strengthening climate change reporting and enhancing public awareness of climate-related challenges.
The workshop, titled “Strengthening Climate Change Journalism: Enhancing Media Capacity on Climate Adaptation, GLOF Risks, Flooding, Early Warning Systems and Disaster Risk Mitigation,” brought together journalists, reporters, anchorpersons and other media professionals from various organizations.
Addressing the participants, Principal Information Officer (PIO), Raisa Adil highlighted the media’s vital role in raising public awareness about the impacts of climate change and promoting informed reporting on environmental issues.
She said responsible and evidence-based journalism was essential to effectively communicate climate risks and support national efforts aimed at building resilience and strengthening disaster preparedness.
The PIO emphasized that Pakistan was among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and stressed the need for accurate, timely and fact-based reporting on issues such as glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flash floods, heatwaves and other climate-induced disasters.
Experts from relevant organizations delivered presentations on climate adaptation, flood risks, early warning systems and disaster risk reduction strategies.
They also discussed best practices for reporting on environmental emergencies and shared practical tools to help journalists communicate scientific information accurately and effectively.
Participants engaged in interactive discussions with the resource persons, exchanging views on the challenges faced by the media in covering climate issues and exploring ways to strengthen collaboration between journalists and technical experts.
Journalists, reporters, anchorpersons and resource persons from different media organizations attended the workshop.
At the conclusion of the event, Principal Information Officer, Raisa Adil, Executive Director General of the Information Service Academy (ISA), Samina Farzin, and Director General, Home Publicity Wing, Ayesha Tassaduq distributed certificates among the participants in recognition of their successful completion of the training workshop.
