ISLAMABAD, Dec 18 (APP): The Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) on Thursday announced the conferment of its prestigious Gold Medals and Prizes for 2025, along with the election of new Fellows, Foreign Fellows and Members, during its General Body Meeting held at the PAS Auditorium.
The announcements followed the PAS Council Meeting convened on December 12 and the General Body Meeting on December 13, both attended by Fellows of the Academy. The meetings deliberated key academic, administrative and scientific matters aimed at strengthening the advancement of science and technology in the country.
The PAS Council recommended the conferment of Gold Medals and Prizes in various scientific disciplines for the year 2025, as well as the election of new Fellows and Members in recognition of their outstanding contributions to science, technology and innovation.
These recommendations were unanimously approved by the General Body. The newly elected Fellows will be formally inducted in December 2026.
Scientists who were elected in December 2024 were formally inducted as PAS Fellows during the meeting. They include Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad; Dr. Mudassir Asrar, Meritorious Professor, University of Balochistan, Quetta; Dr. Zia ul Qayyum, former Executive Director, Higher Education Commission (HEC), Islamabad; Prof. Dr. Saira Riaz, University of the Punjab, Lahore; and Prof. Dr. Syed Tufail Hussain Shah, University of Sindh, Jamshoro.
Eminent scientists selected for PAS Gold Medals and Prizes include Prof. Dr. Muhammad Younus, Vice Chancellor, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore; Prof. Dr. M. Usman Akram, EME College, NUST, Rawalpindi; Dr. Muhammad Ali, QAU, Islamabad; Prof. Dr. Abdul Wadood, Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan; Dr. Tahir Mahmood, International Islamic University, Islamabad; Dr. Murtaza Sayed, University of Peshawar; Prof. Dr. Muazzam Ali Khan Khattak, QAU, Islamabad; Prof. Dr. Shuja ul Mulk Khan, QAU, Islamabad; and Prof. Dr. M. Azam Khan, PMAS Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi.
The newly elected PAS Fellows include Prof. Dr. M. Sabieh Anwar, LUMS, Lahore; Prof. Dr. Zahra Hasan, Aga Khan University, Karachi; Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Punjab Agriculture Food and Drug Authority, Lahore; Dr. Mehboob ur Rahman, National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Faisalabad; and Prof. Dr. Moazur Rahman, Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), University of the Punjab, Lahore.
PAS also elected distinguished international scientists as Foreign Fellows. They include Prof. Dr. Bien Tan, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China; Prof. Dr. Umer Zeeshan Ijaz, University of Glasgow, United Kingdom; and Prof. Dr. Munir Iqbal, The Pirbright Institute, Surrey, United Kingdom.
The newly elected Members of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences include Dr. Saddam Hussain, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad; Dr. Abdur Rauf, University of Swabi; and Dr. Saleem Abdullah, Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan.
The Pakistan Academy of Sciences reaffirmed its commitment to recognizing excellence in scientific research and fostering innovation to support national development.
