ISLAMABAD, Nov 10 (APP):Pakistani-Kashmiri student Zujajah Shaikh has triumphed in the prestigious International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Court Competition round and will represent Japan at the international finals in Hong Kong next year.
The competition was held at Utsunomiya University, Japan on November 8-9, 2025. Shaikh, serving as the prosecutor along with her three-member team from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), showcased exceptional legal skills, eloquence, and a deep understanding of humanitarian law.
The jury included Professor William A. Schabas, a globally recognized scholar in international criminal and human rights law and an authority on genocide and humanitarian jurisprudence.
Participating teams argued a complex legal case simulating real-world conflict scenarios, acting as both prosecutors and defendants. The APU team’s analytical depth, balanced arguments, and strong grasp of IHL principles earned them first place among top universities across Japan.
With this victory, the APU team will represent Japan at the 24th Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition in Hong Kong in March 2026. This marks the third consecutive year that APU has won the national round.
Speaking on the achievement, the students expressed hope that their success would inspire future learners to explore the pivotal role of international law in conflict resolution, justice, and global peacebuilding.
Zujajah Shaikh also holds accolades in essay competitions, including the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) 2021, organized by the British Royal Commonwealth Society, and the 2024 essay contest in Japan by The Goi Peace Foundation on the theme “My Experience of Overcoming Conflict,” where she was awarded a Certificate of Achievement.
