ISLAMABAD, Jul 2 (APP): Pakistan on Wednesday re-elected to the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for the term 2025–2027.
The election was held during the 33rd Session of the IOC General Assembly, which is being held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from 25 June to 2 July 2025.
Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Pakistan to UNESCO, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, is leading the delegation of Pakistan, a press released issued here said.
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO promotes international cooperation in marine sciences to improve management of the ocean, coasts, and marine resources. It also develops scientifically founded services for sustainable ocean economies; and effective warning systems and preparedness for tsunamis and other ocean-related hazards. The Commission is also in charge of coordinating the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 (The Ocean Decade).
The re-election to the Executive Council of IOC is testimony to Pakistan’s positive contribution to ocean-related scientific activities at UNESCO. The Executive Council meets every year and reviews issues and items from ongoing work plans for the General Assembly.
