ISLAMABAD, Oct 26 (APP): Pakistan has thwarted attempts by Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) to expand its operational footprint into the country from its base of operations in Afghanistan over the past three to four years.

According to reports, Kunar, Nangarhar, and Helmand provinces of Afghanistan have been acting as operational hubs for ISKP.

Following the collapse of Daesh strongholds in Syria, ISKP shifted experienced fighters to Afghanistan, strengthening its ranks and expanding its reach.

On 13 April 2017, the US dropped a MOAB on ISKP’s cave and tunnel complex in Mamand Valley, Achin District, Nangarhar, targeting one of the group’s strongholds.

Additionally, Taliban Regime militants who could not secure positions on its payroll after the fall of Kabul in 2021 are moving to ISKP.

In response to ISKP’s expansion attempts into Pakistan, aggressive intelligence-based operations by Pakistan have thwarted the group’s ambitions.

A total of 67 major operations resulted in more than 50 terrorists killed and over 100 arrested. One high-value target was neutralized, and three others were arrested.

ISKP carried out six attacks in Pakistan, resulting in 42 martyrdoms and 85 injuries. Notable attacks included a suicide bombing at a Shia Mosque in Tarlai, Islamabad, and a targeted attack on a Sessions Judge in Mastung, Balochistan.
