ISLAMABAD, Nov 27 (APP):Federal Minister for Energy Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has said that Pakistan was actively promoting clean and green energy, with major initiatives under way to expand renewable energy across the country.
He expressed these views during the panel discussion at Pakistan Business Council’s 2025 Dialogue on the Economy, held at a local hotel here on Thursday.
The federal minister said that Pakistan’s energy sector offers vast opportunities and that, for the first time, comprehensive long-term planning has been undertaken to guide future reforms.
He noted that efforts were being made to resolve the issue of circular debt, which has long burdened the power sector.
Leghari highlighted that the share of alternative energy sources is increasing and is comparatively cheaper. “Pakistan is generating 19,000 megawatts of solar power,” he said, adding that the country is among the fastest-growing solar energy markets in the world.
He emphasized the need for improvements in the net-metering system and acknowledged that tough decisions had to be taken to stabilize the economy.
The minister said that amendments to net-metering regulations were being prepared, and that the government plans to privatize distribution companies while enabling direct power trade in the market. “In the future, the government will no longer remain the sole buyer of electricity,” Leghari said.
He added that the performance of distribution companies was being enhanced.
Leghari further said that Pakistan’s economy was steadily strengthening and that the government has undertaken significant reforms in the energy sector.
He reiterated that the government was committed to providing maximum relief to the public.
He added that the ministry has initiated an effective review process for regulatory decisions, and new measures have been introduced to strengthen governance, transparency, and financial discipline in the power sector.
Leghari revealed that the Ministry has identified 28 key reforms and a competitive energy market would become functional in the coming months.
“The reform process is ongoing, and its results will become visible soon,” he concluded.
