OIC- COMSTECH to organise free medical camp for underserved communities in Cholistan, Fort Abbas

ISLAMABAD, Jun 14 (APP):The OIC Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) will organise a two-day free medical camp in Fort Abbas, a remote desert tehsil bordering India in southern Punjab from June 18-19 to provide healthcare services to underserved communities in Cholistan.
The camp, being organised in collaboration with the Patient and Child Welfare Association Fort Abbas and the Punjab Health Department, is expected to benefit around 1,500 people from remote villages where access to specialised healthcare services remains limited.
A team of 15 senior male and female medical specialists will provide free consultations, diagnosis and medicines during the camp.
The team includes cardiologists, child specialists, dermatologists, ophthalmologists, gastroenterologists, gynaecologists, physiotherapists, general physicians, ENT specialists and female medical practitioners.
Senior healthcare professionals from Bahawalnagar and the region, including former Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur Chief Surgeon Dr. Abid Hussain, former Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Fort Abbas Medical Superintendent Dr. Rao Shahid Tasleem, and former Deputy District Health Officer Dr. Muhammad Tariq, and Ophthalmologist Dr. Qasim Ijaz Arain will also participate in the initiative.
Special healthcare services will be provided to women, children and elderly patients, while awareness sessions on preventive healthcare and common medical conditions are also expected to be conducted.
Speaking about the initiative, COMSTECH Coordinator General Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary said that access to quality healthcare remains a major challenge for many people living in remote and economically disadvantaged areas.
He said the medical camp aims to bring specialist healthcare services directly to communities that often lack access to qualified doctors and medical facilities. He added that COMSTECH would continue supporting similar humanitarian and healthcare initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of vulnerable populations.
Member of the Punjab Assembly, Chaudhry Kashif Naveed Pansota welcomed the initiative and said the people of Fort Abbas and surrounding Cholistan villages viewed the camp as a valuable opportunity to access specialist medical services free of cost.
He appreciated COMSTECH, the Patient and Child Welfare Association Fort Abbas and the Punjab Health Department for facilitating healthcare outreach in the region.
COMSTECH has previously organised similar medical and eye camps in Tharparkar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Muzaffargarh and in African countries including Chad and Niger.
The Fort Abbas initiative forms part of the organisation’s broader health outreach programme aimed at supporting underserved communities in Pakistan and other OIC member states.
