NDMA strengthening monsoon preparedness; Lt Gen Inam Haider

ISLAMABAD, Jun 30 (APP):The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday reviewed coordination mechanisms and resource readiness contingency plans to minimise the impact of heavy rainfall, urban flooding, flash floods, landslides and other monsoon related hazards predicted during the upcoming rainy season.
The measures were discussed during a National Monsoon Coordination Conference here here at the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), said a news release issued here.
The conference was attended by federal ministries, provincial and district disaster management authorities, rescue agencies, humanitarian partners and other stakeholders to review weather forecasts, assess flood risks and finalise preparedness measures for a coordinated nationwide response to the monsoon season.
Chairing the conference, Chairman NDMA, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, stressed upon the importance of proactive planning, timely dissemination of early warnings and close coordination among federal ministries, provincial disaster management authorities, district administrations, rescue services and humanitarian organisations.
He called for enhanced preparedness, rapid information sharing and efficient mobilisation of resources to protect vulnerable communities during the monsoon season.
The NDMA team presented a comprehensive briefing on the operational capabilities of the NEOC, highlighting the use of advanced forecasting technologies, impact based early warning systems, real time monitoring and data driven decision making to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency response across the country.
Participants were also briefed on NDMA’s integrated coordination framework, including multi hazard alerts, flood monitoring, risk communication, anticipatory actions and emergency response planning.
The meeting underscored the need for stronger coordination between national and provincial institutions to ensure timely decision making and an effective disaster response.
The conference reviewed preparedness measures for high risk areas, including flood prone districts, urban centres vulnerable to waterlogging and mountainous regions at risk of landslides and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
Discussions also covered operational readiness, evacuation planning, public awareness campaigns and the availability of emergency resources.
The meeting concluded with all participating stakeholders reaffirming their commitment to maintaining close coordination and ensuring a unified national response throughout the monsoon season to safeguard lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure.
