Modern Regional Blood Center to be established at NIH: Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry

ISLAMABAD, Jun 6 (APP): Minister of State for Capital
Administration and Development Division Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry on
Monday announced that a modern Regional Blood Center would be
established at National Institute of Health (NIH) soon.

He was addressing the World Blood Donor Day conference
organized by Safe Blood Transfusion Programme (SBTP) at the Pakistan
National Council of the Arts.

The minister said that the center will serve as blood
procurement and distribution centre for the entire Islamabad
ensuring quality systems to regulate all activities which will
involve mobilization and retention of voluntary and regular blood
donors, maintenance of donor database, collection of blood donations
as well as processing, screening, testing, component preparation and
storage of the prepared components.

He appreciated the committed efforts of the Blood Programme
for rendering invaluable services for making possible access to safe
blood transfusion to all.

Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that the project has picked up
pace in the last three years as the government placed great emphasis
on blood safety.

He said that there is a need to create awareness regarding
blood donations.

Project Director SBPT informed that the Donor Day celebrations
are organized all over the world in the month of June every year and
in Pakistan also these celebrations are being held on a wider scale
every year.

He said that it is very important to promote the culture of
voluntary blood donations in Pakistan as the country essentially
relies on the Family Replacement Donors to sustain the transfusion
system.

This is an enviable situation and places unnecessary burden on
the families of the patients who are already under stress.
“Reliance on voluntary and regular blood donors will improve
the blood safety standards manifold,” Dr. Zaheer said.

Later, addressing the ceremony President Green Task Force Dr.
Jamal Nasir appreciated the government for improving the standards
of blood transfusion in the country.

He also lauded the efforts of Minister of State Dr. Tariq
Fazal Chaudhry.

Representatives from GIZ, KfW and World Health Organization
were also present on the occasion.

A large number of school, college and university students and
other stakeholders attended the event.

Earlier, a video message on the occasion of the World Blood
Donor Day 2016 from the double Oscar Award Winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinnoy who is the ‘Honorary Ambassador for Blood Safety” in
Pakistan was also broadcast during the function.
