ISLAMABAD, Oct 29 (APP):Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi convened a high-level meeting with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) on Wednesday to assess progress on the Railway Advance Infrastructure Network (RAIN), a flagship initiative aimed at modernizing Pakistan’s rail system.
The meeting featured a comprehensive briefing on Pakistan Railways’ Digital Infrastructure Program. Under the RAIN initiative, key components such as train tracking, freight management, smart station surveillance, and other digital enhancements were discussed.
The Minister was also briefed on the Weigh-in-Motion System, designed to improve load accuracy and operational efficiency.
A groundbreaking development under RAIN involves the installation of R-Tags on freight wagons for real-time weight monitoring.
This advanced system will provide continuous, tamper-proof data to ensure precise load management and eliminate discrepancies.
The R-Tags will be integrated with a centralized Command and Control Room, enabling round-the-clock monitoring of wagon movements and load statistics.
The digital transformation journey has already begun, with the first phase launched from Karachi. Plans are underway to expand the system to additional stations across the country.
As part of this rollout, free smart Wi-Fi is being installed at 52 ML-1 stations, establishing a robust communication network to support the new infrastructure.
During the briefing, Minister Abbasi was also introduced to the rolling stock tracking and train monitoring systems critical elements of the modernisation effort.
He reaffirmed Pakistan Railways’ commitment to embracing digital innovation, stating that the new systems will significantly enhance performance, transparency, and public convenience.
Abbasi said the RAIN initiative marks a turning point for Pakistan Railways, driving rapid progress toward a modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly network built for the 21st century.
