People of Khudian buried Imran's politics: Marriyum

ISLAMABAD, Mar 19 (APP): Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Sunday launched “Planet Champs” application to protect mother earth by raising awareness among the children on climate, water and energy conservation as well as on proper disposal of waste.

“The Planet Champ has been launched in line with the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who while chairing the federal cabinet meeting has accorded approval for a comprehensive awareness campaign on energy, water and environment conservation in the country,” the minister said while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the application.

The minister, accompanied by a first registered batch of the “Planet Champs”, also unveiled its maiden promo which illustrated its theme on planet conservation through the engagement of younger generation.

On the occasion, she congratulated Secretary Information and Broadcasting Shahera Shahid, Pakistan Television (PTV) Managing Director Sohail Ali Khan and staff of the national TV which played an active role in the development of the application and its concept.

“I am delighted to announce that the PTV has restored its legacy of producing children’s content which includes awareness raising programmes like Planet Champs,” the minister said while highlighting main features and functioning of the application.

She said the user-friendly application was open for all in the country and anyone who wanted to contribute in protecting the mother earth could register themselves instantly. The application included a scorecard of energy and water conservation as well as waste disposal.

She said those who would achieve high scores in these areas would be awarded medals, prizes and awards.

The main objective of the application was to create awareness among young generations about global issues like climate change, water scarcity and energy shortage, the minister said, adding it was her belief that initiatives like the Planet Champs would play a critical role in reducing waste of energy and water in the country.

She said the government had already made global issues like climate change and water scarcity part of the educational curriculum in the school so that the youth could play their role in saving the planet earth.

With this initiative, sensitization on these issues had also been made part of the informal education of the children, she added.

She said the initiative would engage children from across the country and a grand ceremony would also be organized in which Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would distribute gifts among the high achievers of the Planet Champs.

Marriyum extended gratitude to WWF-Pakistan for its technical support and also to the Citizen Foundation which would be registering students from 2000 schools with the application.

She also appreciated the efforts of renowned singer Haroon who developed the concept of the Planet Champs.

The minister urged all to play their role for the conservation of the mother earth.
