Karachi mega water supply project set to complete by Dec 2026

ISLAMABAD, Feb 08 (APP): The K-IV water supply project, designed to provide 260 million gallons per day (MGD) of additional water to Karachi, has reached an advanced construction stage and is scheduled for completion by December 2026.
According to documents available with Wealth Pakistan, the K-IV project is jointly funded by the federal government and the Sindh government.
For the current fiscal year 2025-26, the federal government initially allocated Rs 3.209 billion, which was later enhanced to Rs 8.209 billion. The Ministry of Water Resources is also exploring options to increase allocations further through internal savings to keep the project on schedule.
Meanwhile, Sindh’s share stands at Rs8.503 billion under the modified revised PC-I.
Authorities are also processing the second revised PC-I, which is under review at the Ministry of Water Resources. After completion, it will be forwarded to the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives for approval by ECNEC.
The project also requires a dedicated 50MW power supply to ensure smooth testing and commissioning of the system. The Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company is developing this dedicated line. Officials said synchronizing the power infrastructure with the project timeline is crucial for operational readiness.
The K-IV scheme is considered one of Karachi’s most critical infrastructure projects. Once completed, it will significantly enhance bulk water availability and help meet the growing demand of the city’s expanding population.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to completing the project on time and called for close coordination between federal and provincial stakeholders to ensure that funds and utilities remain available without interruption.
